Samsung DeX gives the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra a desktop-style workspace, with movable app windows, side-by-side layouts and up to four workspaces. It can stand in for a laptop when the Android apps and web tools you rely on handle your work; Samsung cautions that some specialized software may still require a laptop.
What DeX does on the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra
Samsung describes DeX on the Tab S12 Ultra as a PC-like desktop. You can arrange apps in windows, snap apps side by side and move apps between workspaces. The tablet supports up to four workspaces, with previews at the top of the screen. One UI 9 also offers two-way and three-way split views. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra product page documents these model-specific features.
This is a way to organize Android apps in a desktop-style layout, not a promise that the tablet runs Windows or macOS programs. The practical question is whether the Android versions of your essential apps provide the features, file access and account support your work requires.
Set up the tablet for laptop-like work
1. Open DeX
Start DeX using the DeX control available on your tablet. The reviewed product information confirms DeX support but does not establish a current menu path, which can vary with software and region; consult the tablet’s current on-device guidance rather than relying on a guessed Settings sequence.

2. Add a keyboard and pointing input
For regular typing and desktop-style navigation, consider Samsung’s Pro Keyboard with trackpad, which Samsung lists as a compatible accessory. It is sold separately. Samsung also lists a Book Cover Keyboard Slim; check the exact accessory SKU for your market before ordering. A separate mouse is another option if you prefer it to the integrated trackpad. 3. Use the S Pen for pen-friendly tasks
The S Pen is included with the tablet, according to Samsung. Keep it available for handwriting, annotations and sketching alongside keyboard-based work. Samsung lists a USB-C cable, ejector pin and quick-start guide among the other box contents; its product page does not list a charger.

4. Organize apps into windows and workspaces
Arrange the apps you use together in split views, and move apps between workspaces when you need separate work contexts. For example, one workspace could hold communication and reference apps while another holds documents and a browser. The number of workspaces and the split-view options are Samsung’s stated S12 Ultra capabilities; the exact controls may depend on the current software interface.

Samsung says a connected external display can expand the workspace. The company’s product page does not establish the S12 Ultra’s precise wired or wireless connection behavior, supported resolutions or required accessories. Before buying a monitor cable, USB-C adapter or hub, verify compatibility against the tablet’s current manual and firmware information, as well as the monitor’s inputs. A Samsung software update note describes external-display DeX and resolution controls for a different tablet, model SM-X828U, so it should not be treated as proof of S12 Ultra specifications. Decide whether DeX can replace your laptop
Make the decision around your actual workload rather than the desktop-like appearance. Samsung names Photoshop, Notability and Clip Studio Paint as examples of premium apps, and explicitly notes that certain specialized software may still require a laptop. - Apps: Confirm that each essential application has an Android version with the functions you need. Test any browser-based tools, file workflows and account requirements that are central to your work.
- Typing and navigation: Decide whether the Pro Keyboard’s integrated trackpad suits you or whether you need a separate mouse. The keyboard is an additional purchase.
- Screen space: The tablet’s 14.6-inch display may be enough for your tasks, while a larger external monitor may help with multi-window work. Confirm model-specific connection details before purchasing display accessories.
- Portability and posture: Samsung lists the Wi-Fi model at about 692 g before accessories. A keyboard and any display peripherals add weight and change how you work on the go.
- Total cost: Compare the tablet plus any separately sold keyboard and display accessories with a laptop that runs the software you need. Samsung’s U.S. launch pricing and temporary keyboard promotion are launch-specific, not a reliable current price quote; check current local pricing.
Independent testing also illustrates why battery figures need context. Tom’s Guide reported 11 hours 31 minutes in its continuous Wi-Fi web-surfing test with the display set to 150 nits. That is the reviewer’s test result, not a guaranteed runtime for every workload. Samsung separately claims up to 23 hours of video playback; that manufacturer estimate uses a different activity and should not be compared directly with the web test. What to expect from the hardware and software
Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement identifies Android 17 with One UI 9 for the S12 Ultra. The Ireland product page specifies a 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display at 2960 × 1848 and 120 Hz. Specifications, connectivity, availability and pricing can differ by market and model, so confirm the local listing for the version you plan to buy. Samsung’s U.S. announcement also states up to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates; treat that as Samsung’s announced support policy, not a substitute for checking regional terms.
