On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Device care > Storage to review personal files and remove items you no longer need. Select files from categories such as downloads, images, videos, audio, documents, or installation files, tap Delete (or Delete all), and confirm Move to Trash. To reclaim the space permanently, open the relevant Trash and empty it after checking its contents.

Use Optimize now for a broad device-health pass, but use Storage when you need to decide exactly which personal files are deleted. Device care > Memory > Clean now is a different operation: it stops selected background apps and frees RAM; it is not the personal-file cleanup tool.

What Samsung Device Care can clean

Device Care (also shown as Device care on some Galaxy software) combines storage management, memory management, battery and security checks. Its Storage page acts as a file browser: you inspect categories and choose the items yourself. The exact categories and labels depend on the Galaxy model, country, wireless provider, software version and app version.

Depending on the device, Storage may show Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, Downloads, Installation files and other system or user-storage categories. A category is not automatically a list of junk. A video, document or downloaded installer may be important, so review the contents before deleting.

Samsung 64GB Evo Plus Class 10 Micro SDXC with Adapter 80MB/S (MB-MC64DA/AM)
  • Up to 80MB/s transfer speed
  • Works with cell phones, smartphones, Android Tablets, Tablet PCs.
  • Great speed and performance for Full HD video recording, high resolution pictures, mobile gaming, music and more.
  • Water proof, Temperature proof, x-ray proof, magnetic proof
  • Compatible with devices with Micro SDHC and Micro SDXC slots.

Device Care has two different meanings of “cleaning”:

  • Storage cleanup: removes files you select and normally places them in Trash first.
  • Optimization: performs a wider maintenance pass that can identify apps using excessive battery power, clear unneeded memory items, delete unnecessary files, scan for malware and close background apps.
  • Memory cleanup: stops selected background apps and frees RAM; it does not remove your photos, downloads or documents.

Open Storage and remove files manually

Manual review gives you the most control over what leaves the phone. Follow this sequence:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Device care (or Device Care).
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Open a category, such as Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, Downloads or Installation files. Your model may display different categories.
  5. Review the files and folders. Touch and hold a file to select it, or tap All when that option is available.
  6. Tap Delete or Delete all.
  7. Read the confirmation and tap Move to Trash.

Start with content that is easy to recognize: old downloads, duplicate screenshots, exported videos, installation files left after an app was installed, and media you have already backed up. If you cannot identify an item confidently, leave it in place until you can verify what created it and whether another app still needs it.

Review large categories before selecting everything

Storage totals can make one category look responsible for all of the missing space, but the category may contain a mixture of irreplaceable and disposable files. Open the list and inspect names, dates and locations where the interface provides them. Select only the obsolete items rather than using Delete all automatically.

For photos and videos, confirm that a copy exists wherever you intend to keep it. “Backed up” should mean that you can actually see the item in the backup service or on another device, not merely that backup is enabled. Keep originals that have not been verified elsewhere.

Use Optimize now for a broad check

For a general maintenance pass, open Settings > Device care and tap Optimize now. Samsung describes this action as checking several areas at once. It can identify apps consuming excessive battery power, clear unneeded memory items, delete unnecessary files, scan for malware and close background apps.

Optimize now is convenient when you want a health check, but it is not a substitute for inspecting your personal files. The one-tap action does not know whether a particular photograph, recording or document is meaningful to you. Use the Storage screen when the decision depends on the file’s content. If Optimize now reports that space was cleared, return to Storage to see which categories still account for the remaining usage.

Empty Trash when space is still occupied

Moving an item to Trash is usually reversible for a period, but it does not necessarily return the storage to the available total immediately. After deleting, open the relevant Trash entry in Device Care or the associated file view. Check the items, then choose Empty and confirm Delete for permanent removal.

Permanent deletion cannot be undone through Device Care. Before emptying Trash:

  • Open the list and verify that no required photo, video, document or download is present.
  • Restore anything you deleted accidentally instead of emptying the entire bin.
  • Check any other Samsung or app-specific Trash locations if the item was deleted from a particular app.

If Storage still shows the old total immediately after emptying Trash, give the device a moment to recalculate, then reopen Storage. A category can also include files owned by an app or the operating system that are not removed by deleting personal items.

Storage and Memory are not the same

Storage is persistent space for photos, videos, applications, downloads, documents and system data. Removing files from Storage can increase the free-space figure after Trash is emptied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory is working RAM used by running apps. Open Settings > Device care > Memory and tap Clean now to stop selected background apps and release RAM. This action does not delete personal files and does not replace the Storage workflow.

This versatile card is also compatible with many tablets and gaming systems like Samsung Galaxy Tabs, the Steam Deck and even the Nintendo Switch

Some apps need background activity for notifications, syncing or connected accessories. If a required app stops behaving as expected after a memory cleanup, open the Memory screen’s Excluded apps setting and add that app. Excluding an app means Device Care will not stop it during that memory cleanup; it does not increase the phone’s physical storage capacity.

Clear an app’s cache without resetting it

When one app is using unusual temporary space, Samsung’s documented path is Settings > Apps > choose an app > Storage > Clear cache. Cache files are temporary data that the app can generally recreate. Clearing cache can remove downloaded temporary files, but the app may need to rebuild them the next time it runs.

Clear data is a separate, more destructive control on the same screen. It resets the app’s stored data and requires confirmation. Depending on the app, that can remove sign-ins, settings, downloaded offline content, drafts or other locally stored information. Do not treat Clear data as an equivalent “junk” button. Use it only when you intentionally want to reset the app and have secured anything you need first.

Move files to a microSD card instead of deleting them

If your Galaxy model supports removable storage, you can preserve large files while freeing internal space. Samsung documents the move operation in My Files:

  1. Open My Files and browse to the files you want to retain.
  2. Select one or more files, then tap Move.
  3. Choose SD card.
  4. Select or create the destination folder.
  5. Tap Move here.

After the move completes, open the destination and verify that the files are readable before removing any remaining internal copies. Many apps cannot be moved to an SD card, and SD-card support is model-specific. Check the exact Galaxy model’s specifications and the card-capacity limits before buying a card. A card is useful for preserving photographs, videos and documents, but it is not a replacement for a second backup.

Which cleanup method should you choose?

Method What it affects User control Reversibility Space or performance result Model dependence
Storage category review Personal files such as downloads, images, videos, audio and documents High: you select individual items or a category’s All option Deleted items commonly go to Trash first; permanent deletion follows Empty and Delete Reclaims persistent storage after Trash is emptied Category names and available categories vary
Optimize now Several maintenance areas, including unnecessary files, background apps and security checks Lower: it is a broad, one-tap pass File results may use Trash; background apps can be reopened May clear unnecessary files and improve housekeeping; the amount is device-dependent Features and wording vary by software and model
Memory > Clean now Selected background apps and working RAM Moderate: Device Care chooses apps, with Excluded apps controls Apps can be launched again; no personal-file Trash is involved Frees RAM temporarily, not persistent storage Menu layout and app behavior vary
Apps > Storage > Clear cache One app’s temporary files High: you choose the app Generally reversible by allowing the app to recreate its cache Reclaims that app’s cache space; the amount varies Every app exposes different cache sizes and behavior
Apps > Storage > Clear data One app’s stored settings and local data High, but destructive Not reliably reversible; sign-ins and offline content may be lost Can reclaim more app space while resetting the app Effects depend on the app
My Files move to SD card Retained files moved from internal storage to removable storage High: you select files and destination Files remain on the card until moved or deleted Frees internal storage without discarding the files Only supported on compatible Galaxy models and cards

A cautious cleanup routine

1. Check what is actually full

Open Settings > Device care > Storage and note which categories dominate. If the largest area is personal media, manual selection is usually the safest route. If an app category is unusually large, inspect that app’s cache and data separately rather than deleting unrelated files.

2. Preserve anything that matters

Back up or move important files before deleting. Verify copies on the backup destination or SD card. Do not assume that a thumbnail, cloud icon or enabled synchronization setting proves that the original is safely available elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Remove obvious expendables

Review old downloads, duplicate screenshots, exported copies and installation files. Select only what you recognize. Keep files whose purpose, owner or backup status is unclear.

4. Process Trash deliberately

Return to Trash after the deletion and inspect it. Restore mistakes. Empty Trash only when you accept irreversible deletion and need the space immediately.

5. Deal with app-specific buildup

For a single app, try Clear cache first. Use Clear data only as a deliberate reset, after recording credentials and protecting offline content.

6. Move, rather than delete, retained large files

On a compatible model, use My Files to move large media to an SD card, then verify the destination. This is a storage-location change, not a backup strategy.

Troubleshooting when the free-space number does not change

Storage remains high after deleting files

Open Trash and empty it; files waiting there still occupy space. Then close and reopen Device Care so it can recalculate. If the same category remains large, inspect another subcategory or app-specific storage because deleting a few visible files may not address the largest allocation.

You cannot find Storage or Trash

Samsung changes labels and placement across Galaxy models, carriers, countries and software versions. In Settings, look for Device care, Storage, Memory or Trash, and use the equivalent entry when capitalization or grouping differs. Some devices also expose Diagnostics or Unused apps in different locations; those additions do not change the basic distinction between Storage and Memory.

Optimize now did not remove a file you expected

Optimize now is a broad maintenance action, not a promise to delete every large or old personal file. Open Storage, locate the relevant category and select the file yourself. Personal photos and documents should never be treated as automatically expendable.

An app lost its settings after cleanup

Clear data, unlike Clear cache, can reset sign-ins, settings and offline material. Sign in again or restore the app’s data from its own backup if available. For future cleanups, use Clear cache when you want to remove temporary files without intentionally resetting the app.

A moved file is missing from an app

Some apps expect files to remain in their original internal-storage folder and cannot use content on an SD card. Check the app’s own import or media-folder settings and verify the file in My Files. If the model or app does not support SD-card storage, keep the file internally or use another verified storage destination.

Why the exact screens differ

Samsung explicitly notes that menu names, paths and screen layouts can vary by wireless provider, country, Galaxy model, software version and app version. One device may show a direct Trash control while another places it inside a category or a related file-management screen. A current page may capitalize the feature as Device Care, while the phone displays Device care.

When a label in these instructions is missing, do not substitute a destructive action at random. Return to Settings and look for the equivalent Storage or Memory entry, or open My Files for file-level operations. The underlying sequence remains: inspect the category, select deliberately, send unwanted files to Trash, verify Trash, and permanently delete only after review.

Final safety checklist

  • Use Storage for personal-file decisions and Memory for RAM management.
  • Start with recognizable expendables, not with files whose purpose is unclear.
  • Verify backups or SD-card copies before deleting originals.
  • Remember that Move to Trash is not the same as permanent deletion.
  • Empty Trash only after checking every item.
  • Prefer Clear cache for temporary app files; treat Clear data as a reset.
  • Confirm that your Galaxy model supports microSD before planning an SD-card move.
  • Expect labels and locations to differ across models, regions, carriers and software versions.
