PaintTool SAI responds to a pressure sensitive drawing tablet only when three things line up: the SAI version you run supports your tablet’s input interface, the tablet maker’s driver is installed and working, and SAI’s own settings match that setup. When pressure or the pen cursor fails, one of those three is almost always the cause. The publisher’s current product page describes SAI Ver.1 as Windows software that requires a WinTab-compatible digitizer with pressure support.

Step 1: Confirm which SAI version you have

SAI is published in two tracks, and they are not equivalent. Ver.1 is the release version. Ver.2 is still a technical preview. The publisher’s development page lists the Ver.2 builds as previews, and it warns that the latest major renovated preview may contain serious bugs. Do not treat Ver.2 as a stable release for a project you cannot afford to lose.

Item SAI Ver.1 SAI Ver.2 (technical preview)
Status Release version; the publisher lists a 31-day trial (product page accessed 2026-10-07) Preview only. A stable technical preview was announced 2026-07-02, and a major renovated technical preview on 2026-09-25
Platform Windows; the publisher lists a 32-bit build Not stated in the publisher’s development page
Tablet input support Requires a WinTab-compatible digitizer with pressure support Pen tablets with WinTab API or TabletPC API support
Known issues Does not work correctly by default with N-trig WinTab drivers, such as the Microsoft Surface driver The 2026-09-25 build has known issues, including a WinTab driver error in some Wacom setups

Check the publisher’s pages before you buy or install anything: PaintTool SAI product page and PaintTool SAI Development Room.

Step 2: Install the tablet maker’s driver

SAI does not replace your tablet’s driver. The publisher’s FAQ states that digitizer-supporting drivers may not be installed, and without them the digitizer cannot respond to pressure or more precise cursor information. The official page points to the driver instructions supplied with your tablet, so follow those rather than a generic guide.

  1. Connect the tablet to the computer using the method in the manufacturer’s documentation.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s driver using the instructions supplied with your tablet. Restart the computer if the installer asks you to.
  3. Confirm the pen moves the cursor and responds to pressure outside SAI, using the maker’s driver utility or another pressure-aware program you already use.
  4. Only after the tablet works outside SAI, open SAI and move on to the test in Step 4.

Step 3: Use SAI’s built-in help for controls

SAI’s interface items have tooltips. To get help for a specific control, point at it and press F1, which opens the help documentation, as the publisher’s product page describes. Use this route to locate brush, pressure, and canvas controls in the version you are running. The publisher’s material available for this guide does not give a complete step-by-step sequence for creating a canvas, choosing a brush, and saving a first drawing, so the built-in help and the current official documentation are the reliable sources for those menu paths.

Step 4: Test pressure in a new drawing area

Open a new, blank drawing area in SAI. Draw one short stroke with light pressure and one with firm pressure. Stroke width or opacity should change between the two if pressure is working. If the stroke stays the same width, the problem is almost always upstream of SAI, so return to Step 2 and check the driver before changing SAI settings.

“Application doesn’t recognize pressure”

  • Confirm the manufacturer driver is installed and working outside SAI (Step 2).
  • Confirm your SAI version supports your tablet’s interface: WinTab for Ver.1, and WinTab or TabletPC API for the Ver.2 preview.
  • If you use Ver.1 with a Microsoft Surface-style N-trig driver, see the N-trig section below.

“Previously pressure is recognized, but suddenly application cannot recognize them”

Check whether something changed in the driver or Windows configuration since it last worked, and consult the PaintTool SAI Digitizer Device FAQ. For Wacom tablets, the FAQ suggests a driver preferences reset, covered below, but that step should be a later resort.

“Drawing position is different from mouse cursor position”

The publisher lists this as a reader problem in its FAQ. The material available for this guide does not give a verified fix for it, so consult the Digitizer Device FAQ and the tablet maker’s current driver help for calibration options.

N-trig drivers and the Ver.1 workaround

The publisher states that SAI Ver.1 does not work correctly by default with N-trig WinTab drivers, such as Microsoft Surface’s driver. It also says that changing TabletMouseSimulation from 0 to 1 in misc.ini may make it work. This is a conditional workaround, not a universal fix. Before you edit the file:

  1. Make a backup copy of misc.ini.
  2. Change the value of TabletMouseSimulation from 0 to 1.
  3. Restart SAI and repeat the pressure test from Step 4.
  4. If the result does not change, restore the backup and check the publisher’s FAQ.

Resetting Wacom driver preferences

The publisher’s tablet FAQ suggests resetting Wacom driver preferences for some lost-pressure, cursor, stabilizer, or pen-button problems. The reset removes your existing tablet settings, so you will need to configure pen buttons, pressure settings, and similar options again. Before you reset, note the settings you use. Follow the reset instructions in the Digitizer Device FAQ, and use your tablet maker’s current driver help for the reconfiguration.

The SAI Ver.2 preview WinTab error on Wacom

For a documented WinTab driver error in certain Wacom environments, the Ver.2 major renovated preview’s development page says the issue is typically resolved by enabling Windows Ink in the pen tablet settings and changing [Pen Tablet Control API] to [Use Windows API] in SAI’s [Options] dialog. This applies only to that preview and that error. It does not establish that these settings are right for every tablet or SAI version, so do not apply them to Ver.1.

  1. Save all open work in SAI and close the program.
  2. Enable Windows Ink in your pen tablet settings.
  3. Reopen SAI, go to [Options], and change [Pen Tablet Control API] to [Use Windows API].
  4. Repeat the pressure test from Step 4.

Choosing a pressure sensitive drawing tablet for SAI

The publisher’s documentation supports the category, a pressure sensitive drawing tablet, but it does not establish compatibility for any specific model. Before you buy, check the model against the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The manufacturer’s current driver and whether it supports your operating system.
  • Pressure capability stated by the manufacturer.
  • Whether the tablet’s interface matches your SAI version: WinTab for Ver.1, and WinTab or TabletPC API for the Ver.2 preview.
  • Drawing area and pen ergonomics, which are a matter of personal preference.

If the model you want is not listed in the manufacturer’s documentation for your SAI version, ask the publisher through its official pages before you rely on it for real work.
