Google publicly announced Nano Banana in Search on October 13, 2025—not as a surprise September 2026 launch. The original rollout brought photo editing to Lens and AI Mode, and text-to-image generation to AI Mode. Google’s current help page now documents image creation and editing through Search, AI Mode, Lens, and Circle to Search, with access depending on account, language, location, and plan.

What Nano Banana in Search does

Nano Banana is Google’s image-generation and editing model, available through several Search-related entry points. You can use a text prompt to create an image or, on supported surfaces, provide an existing image and describe a change. The available paths have expanded since the original launch, so the October 2025 announcement and today’s help instructions do not describe identical entry points.

At launch, Google said Lens users could enter Create mode to edit a photo, while AI Mode could generate a new image from a text prompt. Google Search Product Management lead Lou Wang, Senior Director of Product Management, wrote on October 13, 2025: “Today, we’re starting to roll out Nano Banana in Search via Google Lens and AI Mode, so you can instantly transform photos with our latest image editing model.” Google’s launch announcement

Ways to create or edit images in Search

Surface What you can do How to start
Google Search Generate an image from a prompt, then ask AI Mode to edit it. Enter an image prompt, tap Search, and look for the generated image in an AI Overview.
AI Mode Create an image from a prompt or upload an image and describe edits. Select image creation, enter your prompt or upload an image, and describe the change.
Google Lens Create or edit using a camera image or a prompt. Open Lens in the Google app, tap Create, and provide an image or prompt.
Circle to Search Generate a change to a selected part of an image. Select part of an image, tap create, and describe what you want changed.
AI Overviews Generate an image from a text prompt. Android Central reported prompts such as “create a visual” or “help me visualize”; the report does not provide a complete current step-by-step path.

The first four routes are listed on Google Search Help. AI Overviews were a later addition: Android Central reported on July 14, 2026, that image generation was being added there, initially rolling out to English-language desktop users in the U.S. That rollout description is specific to the report’s date, not a guarantee of present availability. How to use Nano Banana in Search

Generate an image from a prompt

  1. In Google Search, enter a specific image prompt and tap Search. Google Search Help says the generated image can appear in an AI Overview.
  2. To continue working on the image, ask AI Mode to edit it. Alternatively, open AI Mode and select image creation before entering a prompt.
  3. Describe the subject and the change or style you want. Google’s examples include “create a picture of a futuristic car with laser headlights” and “Generate an image of an orange tabby cat cooking.”

Edit a photo with Lens

  1. Open the Google app and launch Lens.
  2. Tap Create, then use a camera image or enter a prompt.
  3. Describe the edit. At the original rollout, Google said users could choose a suggested prompt or describe the change, then continue editing with follow-up prompts and share the result.

Change part of an image with Circle to Search

  1. Select the relevant part of an image using Circle to Search.
  2. Tap create and describe the change you want.

Labels and availability can vary as Google updates Search. Consult the current Search Help instructions if a control described here is not visible in your app or account.

Account, language, location, and plan requirements

Google Search Help says image creation requires a personal Google Account that you manage, and currently describes the feature as available in English. The launch announcement said the initial Lens and AI Mode rollout was in English in the U.S. and India, with more countries and languages to follow. That initial rollout geography should not be mistaken for a complete current availability list.

Google Search Help lists these daily AI Mode image-generation limits. They apply within a 24-hour period and may change with capacity, demand, and subscription plan.

Is Nano Banana in Search free?

A Google AI subscription is not required for all Search image generation: Google Search Help lists an allowance of up to 25 images per day for users without a Google AI plan. Paid plans have higher listed AI Mode limits, but account eligibility and feature availability still depend on Google’s current conditions. Check the help page before relying on a particular limit.
