To remove a distraction in a photo on a compatible Mac, open it in Photos, click Edit, then choose Tools > Clean Up. Click, brush over, or circle the object and inspect the result. Photos also offers Extend to generate beyond the image’s original frame and Reframe to adjust perspective when those tools are available.
Choose the tool for the edit you need

Apple documents these as Apple Intelligence editing tools, but does not provide a quantitative quality comparison among them. Choose based on the change you want; the amount of selection or correction needed depends on the image.
Remove an object with Clean Up
- Open Photos and double-click the photo you want to edit.
- Click Edit in the toolbar.
- Choose Tools > Clean Up. Labels or placement can vary by macOS version.
- Click, brush over, or circle the distracting area. Some objects may be highlighted automatically. Adjust the brush size or zoom in when you need more precise control.
- Review the result, then click Done.
Clean Up is intended for distractions in a photo. Avoid brushing over a person’s face: Apple warns that doing so can create a blurred or pixelated effect. Inspect important details after the edit rather than assuming the generated replacement is accurate. Apple says, “Apple Intelligence uses generative models and outputs may vary. Extend
In Photos’ editing tools, choose Extend if it is available. It generates content outside the existing image frame, which can help change the composition. Apple’s documentation describes the tool but does not guarantee a particular result; inspect the generated areas closely.

Reframe
Choose Reframe when you want to adjust a photo’s perspective. It is distinct from Clean Up: it changes perspective rather than removing a selected distraction. Availability depends on the Mac, macOS release, language, and region.
Check whether your Mac can use Clean Up
Apple’s Clean Up requirements page, published April 14, 2025, lists a Mac with M1 or later and macOS Sequoia 15.1 as the Mac baseline. Apple Intelligence is not available on every Mac or in every language or region, and some features may have usage limits. Check Apple’s current Requirements to use Clean Up in Photos before relying on availability.

Apple’s requirements page describes separate Apple Intelligence conditions for the European Union and restrictions involving mainland China. In particular, it says Clean Up will not work on devices purchased in mainland China, or in the stated case where a supported device is used there with an Apple Account set to China mainland. These are specific regional conditions, not a universal rule for every feature.
Apple lists support for English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese in its macOS 27 guide, while warning that feature availability varies. That list should not be read as a promise that every tool works in every listed language or region.

Protect the original and recover from a poor result
Photos retains the original image when you make edits. Apple’s editing guide explains that you can compare the original with the edited photo, undo changes, or revert to the original. If you want a separate working copy before experimenting, duplicate the photo first.
Adjustments can be copied to other images, but Apple lists Retouch, red-eye, crop, and third-party extension settings among the edits that cannot be copied and pasted. See Apple’s Editing basics in Photos on Mac for the standard editing and recovery controls.

Keep the other Mac AI features in context
Photos also supports natural-language searches for photos or moments in videos, and custom Memory Movies generated from a description. These are library discovery and movie-creation features, not part of the Clean Up, Extend, or Reframe editing workflow. Apple notes that a Memory Movie option may take time to appear while Photos processes the library.
Image Playground is another Mac feature for creating or editing original images from descriptions, photos, or people. It is separate from changing a photo in the Photos library with Clean Up, Extend, or Reframe. Apple describes these features in its creative tools guide for Mac.
