You can use an iPad as a second screen for a Windows PC, but not through Windows or Apple’s built-in display features alone. Windows uses Miracast for its native wireless display function, while iPadOS is not a Miracast receiver; Apple Sidecar works only within Apple-device setups.
The practical solution is a third-party virtual-display app. The Windows component creates an additional monitor, captures that display, and sends it to an iPad app over Wi-Fi or USB. spacedesk is a flexible option for local-network and USB connections; Splashtop Wired XDisplay is a USB-focused alternative.
Choose a method

For most people, start with spacedesk. Use its wireless mode for convenience or USB mode when Wi-Fi latency and congestion are a problem. Use Wired XDisplay if you specifically want Splashtop’s wired workflow.
Method 1: Use spacedesk
Install the required software
- On the Windows PC, download and install the spacedesk DRIVER from spacedesk.net.
- On the iPad, install spacedesk Viewer from the Apple App Store.
- Do not assume that installing a spacedesk listing from the Microsoft Store is the same as installing the Windows driver. The documented setup uses the downloadable driver from spacedesk.net.
For wireless use, connect the PC and iPad to the same reachable local Wi-Fi network. Internet access is not required after the devices can communicate with each other locally. Guest Wi-Fi networks and networks with client isolation can prevent the devices from seeing one another even when they use the same network name.

Connect the iPad wirelessly
- Open spacedesk Driver Console in Windows.
- Confirm that the main driver control is set to ON.
- Open spacedesk on the iPad.
- Select the Windows computer shown in the viewer. If it is not listed, tap the underlined Connection: [IP address] entry and try the computer’s local IP address.
- When iPadOS asks for local-network access, tap the option to allow it.
The first connection may mirror the Windows desktop. That does not mean the setup failed. Press Windows + P on the PC and select Extend.
Arrange the displays in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Use Identify if you need Windows to show which display is which.
- Drag the display rectangles until their positions match your physical setup. For example, place the iPad rectangle to the left of the main monitor if the iPad sits on the left side of your desk.
- Select the iPad display and adjust Display resolution and Scale if the text or desktop looks too large or too small.
Once the displays are extended, move an application to the iPad by dragging its window across the edge of the main monitor. You can also use the Windows display settings to select a preferred primary display.
Use spacedesk over USB
A USB connection can reduce the latency and frame drops caused by busy Wi-Fi. It still uses spacedesk’s virtual-display driver; the iPad is not receiving a raw HDMI or DisplayPort signal.

- Connect the iPad to the PC with a compatible USB-C or Lightning cable.
- Open the spacedesk interface on Windows and go to Communication Interfaces.
- Enable USB Cable iOS.
- Keep the main spacedesk control set to ON.
- To force USB rather than Wi-Fi, disable Local Area Network.
- Open spacedesk on the iPad. When it shows “spacedesk USB connection recognized,” tap Connect.
If Windows or the iPad asks you to trust the computer or allow access, accept the prompt. A charge-only cable will not provide the required data connection.

Method 2: Use Splashtop Wired XDisplay
Wired XDisplay is designed for a USB connection between the Windows PC and iPad. Splashtop’s setup requires the latest version of iTunes on Windows so the PC can detect the wired iPad.
Install and connect Wired XDisplay
- Install the latest iTunes for Windows.
- Download and install the Wired XDisplay Agent for PC.
- Install Splashtop Wired XDisplay on the iPad.
- Connect the iPad to Windows with a data-capable USB-C or Lightning cable.
- Confirm that Windows or iTunes detects the iPad. If it does not, try a different cable first.
- Open Wired XDisplay on the iPad.
- Press Windows + P on the PC and select Extend.
- In Wired XDisplay’s Advanced tab, make sure Enable mirror mode is unchecked.
Splashtop lists Windows 7 or later and iOS 7.0 or later as product requirements. Those are published minimums, not a guarantee that every combination of current Windows, iPadOS, iTunes, and hardware will behave identically.

Fix Wired XDisplay driver problems
If the virtual display does not appear or the driver fails to install automatically, Splashtop identifies the driver location as:

Install the driver from that folder, then restart the agent and reconnect the iPad.

If the virtual display still does not extend, run the agent in Windows 7 compatibility mode:
- Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Splashtop\Splashtop Wired XDisplay\Agent\SWXDAgent.exe.
- Right-click SWXDAgent.exe and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for:.
- Select Windows 7, then apply the change.
If Windows does not detect the iPad at all, replace the cable before troubleshooting the display settings. A cable that charges the iPad may not carry data.
What the iPad can—and cannot—do here
- It can act as an extended Windows desktop after the virtual display driver is installed and Windows is set to Extend.
- It is not receiving an HDMI or DisplayPort signal. The Windows software creates a virtual monitor, captures it, and streams the result to the iPad.
- Bluetooth alone cannot turn it into a monitor. These solutions use local Wi-Fi networking or USB.
- Installing only the iPad app is not enough. The Windows host software and display driver are required.
- Sidecar is not a Windows feature. It cannot be used to connect a Windows PC to an iPad as a second display.
- Windows Cast or Project does not directly discover an iPad. Those built-in wireless-display tools use Miracast, which iPadOS does not natively receive.
Improve usability and performance
- Use Extend, not Duplicate. Duplicate shows the same desktop on both screens and wastes the extra workspace.
- Match the layout. In Settings > System > Display, position the iPad rectangle where it sits in relation to the main monitor.
- Choose a practical role. Chat, music controls, email, documentation, a terminal, and monitoring panels are usually more comfortable secondary-screen tasks than latency-sensitive gaming or color-critical editing.
- Prefer USB for responsiveness. Wireless streaming can introduce compression, latency, and dropped frames. USB avoids Wi-Fi congestion but still depends on the app, driver, cable, and PC.
- Adjust resolution and scaling. Select the iPad display in Windows Display settings, then change Display resolution and Scale. The available choices depend on the virtual-display driver.
FAQ
Can I connect an iPad to Windows as a monitor without installing an app?
No. Windows does not natively use an iPad as a wireless monitor, and iPadOS is not a Miracast receiver. Install a Windows virtual-display driver and the matching iPad app, such as spacedesk or Wired XDisplay.

Is Sidecar available between Windows and an iPad?
No. Sidecar is an Apple-device feature and does not support a Windows PC as the host.
Why does my iPad mirror Windows instead of extending it?
Press Windows + P on the PC and select Extend. With Wired XDisplay, also open its Advanced settings and turn off Enable mirror mode.
Does spacedesk require the internet?
No. Wireless spacedesk normally requires the PC and iPad to communicate on the same local network. An active internet connection is not necessary for that local connection.

No. The cable must support data, not just charging. For Wired XDisplay, Windows or iTunes must detect the iPad before the display connection can work.
Which is better: spacedesk or Wired XDisplay?
spacedesk is the more flexible choice because it supports Wi-Fi and USB. Wired XDisplay is a suitable alternative when you want a USB-focused setup and are prepared to install iTunes and its Windows agent.
The Bottom Line
Use spacedesk if you want the simplest flexible solution: install its Windows driver and iPad Viewer, connect both devices locally, then choose Windows + P > Extend. Use USB when Wi-Fi performance is poor. If you prefer a wired-only alternative, install iTunes and Splashtop Wired XDisplay, use a data cable, disable mirror mode, and switch Windows to Extend.
