For a two-way spoken exchange, use the Google Translate mobile app—not the website. Open Live translate, select both languages, and choose Conversation. Each person speaks in turn; the app detects the change between languages and plays the translation through the phone’s speakers or connected headphones. If both people need to read along, switch to Face to face view.

What Google Translate’s conversation mode does

Google Translate has several speech-related tools that look similar but serve different purposes. Conversation is the mode for a back-and-forth exchange: one person speaks, the app translates, and the other person answers in the second language. It is designed for turn-taking rather than a single dictated phrase.

The conversation flow is available in the Google Translate app for Android phones and tablets and for iPhone and iPad. Google’s computer help says the browser version cannot listen and translate at the same time for this live exchange, so opening translate.google.com on a laptop is not an equivalent workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app can present the exchange in two ways:

  • Conversation: a spoken turn-taking interface. Translations can play through the phone speaker or headphones.
  • Face to face: a split-screen view in which each person sees the transcript and translation on their half of the display.

Controls and available modes can differ slightly between Android, iOS, app versions, and connected headphones. The labels to look for are still Live translate, Conversation, and Face to face.

Before you start

Use the latest mobile app

Update or open Google Translate on your Android phone or tablet, or on your iPhone or iPad. Google’s current platform guidance recommends the latest app version for Live translate. An older installation may show a different layout or lack a newer mode.

Check both languages in the app

Choose the language each person will speak. Language support is feature-specific: a language may appear in the app but not be available for every Live translate mode or language pairing. Confirm that the selected pair exposes Live translate before you begin.

Prepare the microphone and listening setup

Give the app a clear microphone signal. A quiet location makes recognition easier, and the phone should be close enough to the speaker without being covered by a case, hand, or clothing. Headphones are optional for Conversation because translated audio can come from the phone speakers. They can be useful when you need to keep the exchange private or reduce feedback between the microphone and speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide how both people will see the device

If the goal is simply to hear each translation, Conversation with the phone held between the speakers may be enough. If both people need to inspect spelling or read their own language, plan to use Face to face. A stand, table, or stable hand position helps keep the display visible while the microphone remains aimed toward the person speaking.

Test a harmless phrase first

Before discussing an address, reservation, medicine, or other consequential detail, say a short greeting. This confirms that the selected languages, microphone permission, output volume, and audio route are working. It also lets both speakers learn how long to pause between turns.

Step-by-step: start a two-way spoken conversation

  1. Open Google Translate. Launch the app on your Android or iOS device. If the app offers an update, install it before starting.
  2. Tap Live translate. This control appears at the bottom of the mobile app interface.
  3. Select the two languages. Set the language the first person will speak and the language the second person will speak. Check that Live translate is available for this pair.
  4. Choose Conversation. Do not choose the one-phrase Speak function if you want an ongoing exchange. Conversation is the Live translate mode intended for alternating speakers.
  5. Give the phone a clear starting signal. Hold it where the microphone can hear the current speaker. Speak normally, then pause so the app can finish recognizing and translating the turn.
  6. Take turns. The microphone automatically detects when one language stops and the other language starts. Wait for the translation to finish before the other person begins, especially in a noisy room.
  7. Listen or read the result. Audio plays through the phone speakers or connected headphones. The transcript and translation remain available on screen as the exchange proceeds.
  8. Pause or resume when needed. Use the on-screen Speak control to pause or continue listening. The exact control placement can vary by platform and app version.
  9. Exit the session. Use the Back control when the conversation is over. If you only need to change a language, return to the language selectors rather than closing the app.

Conversation works best when only one person speaks at a time. Short, complete sentences also give the recognizer less ambiguity than several people talking over one another.

What each person should do during a turn

The first speaker should wait until the previous translated audio has finished, then say one idea in the selected source language. Pause at a natural sentence boundary. The other person should wait for the app to identify the language change and play or display the result before answering. If a sentence is long, split it into smaller statements instead of continuing while the app is still processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a response is misunderstood, repeat only the important part rather than speaking louder or adding several new sentences. For a proper name, street, number, or date, say it slowly and use the written transcript as a second check. These habits are especially useful when the conversation contains words that sound alike or when background noise is present.

Use Face to face view for in-person exchanges

Conversation mode is primarily an audio interaction, but two people may also need to verify names, numbers, addresses, or technical terms visually. Tap Face to face from the Live translate interface to split the display into two orientations.

Each speaker can then look at the half of the screen oriented toward them and follow the transcript and translation for their language. Place the phone flat between the two people or hold it so both sides are readable. Face to face changes the presentation; it does not turn the browser version into a live translator and does not guarantee that every language pair supports the same controls.

Face to face is not a separate translation engine. It is a viewing arrangement for the Live translate exchange. If the split-screen option is absent, confirm that the app is updated and that the selected pair supports that mode on the current device. You can still use the standard Conversation view when the text layout is unavailable.

Conversation, Face to face, Listening, and Text only compared

Mode Best for Output Important detail
Conversation A two-way spoken exchange Translated speech plus on-screen text People take turns; the microphone detects when one language gives way to the other.
Face to face An in-person exchange where both people need to read Split-screen transcript and translation, with conversation audio available Each person follows the half of the display facing them.
Listening Listening to translated speech in a setting where audio is the focus Audio intended for listening Headphone requirements or disabled controls can vary by platform and setup; do not assume it is identical to Conversation.
Text only Reading translations without spoken output Written translation Useful when audio would be disruptive or when you need to inspect the wording silently.

Google’s documented mode names and controls can change slightly with the operating system and whether headphones are connected. If a mode is missing, first verify the language pair and app version instead of assuming the phone is incompatible.

Conversation mode versus the basic Speak button

The ordinary speech-input flow is for one phrase at a time. Select source and target languages, tap Speak, and talk when prompted. Google says the Speak button can be disabled when the selected spoken language is not supported for that speech-input mode.

That disabled control is not the same as a temporary microphone failure. If your goal is an ongoing exchange, switch to Live translate > Conversation and check whether that specific pair is supported there. The two features have separate availability rules.

Use the basic Speak flow when you want to dictate and inspect one sentence, when the other person is not present, or when you need to edit the wording before showing it. Use Conversation when the exchange itself is the task and both participants will alternate speaking. Moving between these tools may require returning to the main language or Live translate controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when a language or control is unavailable

The language is listed but Live translate does not appear

  • Recheck both language selectors; support can differ by direction and feature.
  • Confirm that the app is current.
  • Try the basic Speak function to see whether speech input is supported, but do not treat that as proof that Conversation is available.
  • Check Google’s current Android or iOS Live translate help for the published language list, because availability changes over time.

The Speak control is greyed out

Google identifies an unsupported spoken language for that speech-input mode as one reason the Speak button is disabled. Choose a supported spoken language or use text input. A greyed-out control does not establish that the entire app lacks translation for the language.

A mode appears on one device but not another

Do not assume that a control missing on iPhone is broken because it appears on an Android phone, or vice versa. Google publishes separate Android and iOS guidance, and the available controls can also respond to the app version, selected languages, and connected headphones. Compare the exact platform help and test the pair on the device you will actually use.

The app does not hear you

  1. Check that Google Translate has microphone permission in the phone’s system settings.
  2. Move to a quieter room and keep the microphone opening unobstructed.
  3. Speak closer to the device without shouting or covering the microphone.
  4. If recognition remains poor, try an external microphone or increase the input volume, as Google suggests for speech-input problems.
  5. Restart the conversation after changing permission or audio settings.

The app confuses the speakers or translates too early

  • Use strict turn-taking: one person speaks, pauses, and waits for the result.
  • Reduce music, traffic, and other competing voices.
  • In Face to face view, keep the phone positioned between the speakers so both can see their own side.
  • For names, addresses, and numbers, use the displayed text to verify what was heard rather than relying only on the audio.

Audio is hard to hear

Raise the phone’s media volume and check whether output is going to the intended headphones or speaker. Conversation can play through either the phone speakers or connected headphones. If you use a screen reader, Google recommends headphones because the screen reader voice can interfere with transcribed speech.

Headphones are not a universal fix. They may change which controls are shown, and some Listening setups can require headphones or leave a control unavailable. For ordinary Conversation, start with the phone speaker if that is simpler, then connect headphones if privacy or competing noise makes them preferable.

Web browser limitation

The desktop and mobile browser experience is not the same as the app’s live conversation mode. Google’s computer help states: “You can’t talk and translate at the same time on Google Translate for the web, but you can use the Translate app on a phone or tablet.” For a real-time spoken exchange, use the mobile app and its Live translate controls.

A browser can still be useful for ordinary typed translation, but it should not be presented as a substitute for the app’s automatic turn detection and spoken output. If you are planning a conversation away from home, install and test the mobile app before leaving rather than assuming a laptop browser will provide the same controls.

Language and country availability can change

Google’s August 26, 2025 announcement described the live conversation feature as supporting “more than 70 languages.” It also described an initial rollout over the following days for users in the United States, Mexico, and India. That was a dated rollout statement, not a promise that every language pair or mode is available in every country today.

For a current answer, test the exact pair in the app and consult Google’s platform-specific Android or iOS help. Do not infer support for Conversation from the number of languages shown in a general translation list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability can differ in several ways: a language may be available for typed translation but not speech input; speech input may work in one direction but not another; and a mode such as Listening or Face to face may expose different controls from Conversation. When arranging a meeting or trip, check both directions in advance and keep a text-based fallback for a pair the app does not expose.

Offline live translation: a narrow, device-specific option

Google documents offline Live translate for eligible Pixel phones and a listed set of language pairs. The Android guidance specifically identifies Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 users for the currently documented offline capability. Device eligibility and offline pairs are changeable, so check the current Android help before relying on the feature without a connection.

Unless your device and pair are explicitly listed, plan to use the normal supported setup and verify the conversation before you leave coverage. Offline eligibility should not be generalized to all Android phones, all iPhones, or all languages.

Offline support is not a reason to skip a test. Downloading or owning an eligible phone does not by itself confirm that the two languages you need are among the published offline pairs. Test while disconnected, confirm that the Live translate controls remain available, and carry a written alternative for critical information.

How to make a translated conversation easier to follow

Agree on turn-taking

Tell both people to wait for the other speaker to finish. The microphone’s automatic language-change detection is most useful when turns are distinct; interruptions and overlapping speech give it less reliable boundaries.

Use the screen for critical details

Audio is convenient, but read the transcript when a misunderstanding would matter. Spellings, street names, dates, medication names, and account numbers deserve visual confirmation. Face to face is especially useful when each person needs a readable view without passing the phone back and forth.

Keep the device stable

A stationary phone between the speakers keeps the microphone and display in a predictable position. If one person holds it, avoid pointing the microphone away from the current speaker.

Keep sentences concrete

Simple wording and one subject per turn make it easier to see whether the displayed text matches what was intended. Avoid combining several questions, idioms, and corrections in one uninterrupted turn. If the result looks wrong, restate the specific fact in a shorter sentence and compare the new transcript.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate translation from interpretation

Live translate produces a machine translation, not a certified interpreter. For legal, medical, immigration, emergency, or safety-critical communication, use a qualified human interpreter when accuracy and accountability are required. The available Google documentation does not provide an independent accuracy rate, latency figure, or conversation-success statistic, so do not treat a fluent-sounding result as a guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Google Translate conversation mode on a computer?

No. Google’s computer help says the web version cannot talk and translate at the same time. Use the Google Translate app on an Android phone or tablet, or an iPhone or iPad.

What is the difference between Conversation and Face to face?

Conversation is the spoken, turn-by-turn mode. Face to face changes the display to a split-screen layout so each person can read the transcript and translation on their side.

Do both people need headphones?

No. Conversation audio can play through the phone speakers or connected headphones. Headphones are optional, although Google recommends them when a screen reader’s voice could interfere with transcribed speech.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the Speak button disabled?

Google says the spoken language may not be supported for that speech-input mode. Check the selected language and try a supported pair; a disabled Speak control does not prove that Conversation or all translation features are unavailable.

Why does Google Translate stop hearing me?

Check microphone permission, move to a quieter location, keep the microphone unobstructed, and speak close enough to the device. Google also suggests trying an external microphone or increasing input volume for speech-input problems.

Does Live translate work offline?

Only in a narrow, device-specific setup documented by Google. The current Android guidance identifies eligible Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 phones and a listed set of language pairs. Verify the current list before relying on offline use.

How many languages does the feature support?

Google’s August 26, 2025 announcement described live conversation as supporting more than 70 languages. Current availability still depends on the country, device, mode, direction, and exact language pair, so check inside the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Google Translate accurate enough for medical or legal conversations?

Do not rely on machine translation as a certified interpretation for medical, legal, immigration, emergency, or safety-critical matters. Use a qualified human interpreter when accuracy and accountability are required, and verify important names, numbers, and instructions on screen.

The Bottom Line

For a two-way spoken exchange, use the updated Google Translate mobile app: tap Live translate, choose both languages, and select Conversation. Let speakers take turns, use Face to face for split-screen reading, and check the exact language pair, microphone permissions, device support, and offline limits before relying on it.
