Google Maps lists turn a pile of saved pins into purposeful collections you can retrieve, display, share, and maintain. Create a list from the Saved area on desktop or the You tab on a phone, add places from their detail pages, then use notes, ordering, map visibility, and sharing controls to keep each collection useful.
This guide covers the current Google-documented workflow for desktop, Android, and iPhone/iPad. Labels and available controls can differ as Maps is updated, so use the platform-specific path that matches your device.
What Google Maps lists do—and what they do not do
Google describes the feature simply: “In Google Maps, you can create a list of places, like your favorite places or places you want to visit.” A list is a collection of saved place entries inside Google Maps. It is useful for plans such as Weekend ideas, Trip: Kyoto, or Restaurants to try, where every entry is a real place that Maps can display and open.
Saved places are private by default. Other people can find a list only after you share it, and you can choose whether they merely view it or can edit it. A list is also different from an offline map download: a list stores place collections, while Offline Maps downloads a geographic area for use without a connection. Offline downloads are unavailable in some countries and regions, according to Google.

Google says Saved Lists are limited to 3,000 entries. The help page does not state a publication year for that limit. Lists larger than that may not display properly, so split a very large collection by trip, region, year, or purpose rather than treating one list as a permanent database.
For a fully designed map with custom layers and editing tools, Google identifies My Maps as the product for creating and editing custom maps online. Use a regular Maps list when your main need is a manageable collection of saved places; use My Maps when you need a custom map rather than a straightforward saved-place list.
Plan a list system before you start saving
Organization works best when each list answers one question. A small number of clear lists is easier to maintain than dozens of highly specific categories.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose names that explain the decision
- Weekend ideas: places you might visit soon, regardless of category.
- Trip: Kyoto: locations tied to one itinerary.
- Restaurants to try: a food-focused queue that can survive several trips.
- Repeat favorites: places you have already visited and would return to.
These are organizational examples, not Google-prescribed categories. Include a city, trip name, or time frame when it prevents ambiguity. Avoid names such as “Stuff” or “Maybe” that become unclear after a few months.
Decide whether a place belongs in more than one list
A restaurant can belong in both Trip: Kyoto and Restaurants to try. Duplicating a place across purpose-based lists is often more useful than forcing every pin into exactly one category. Keep the number of overlapping lists modest so edits do not become tedious.
Use notes for context, not for a second database
Add a short note when the pin alone does not explain why you saved it: “Try the lunch set,” “Near the west exit,” or “Check reservation policy.” Google’s mobile instructions support notes on places. On iPhone and iPad, Google says a note can contain up to 4,000 characters. In a shared list, agree on a simple note style—for example, start with a date or a person’s initials—so collaborators can understand one another’s context.
Create a list
Desktop
- Open Google Maps and select Saved.
- Choose New list.
- Enter a descriptive list name.
- Add an optional description and icon if those controls are shown.
- Save the list. Google’s desktop instructions say changes save automatically.
You can also start while saving a place: open a place’s details, select Save, and choose the option to create a new list if it is offered.

Android
- Open Google Maps and tap You.
- Choose New list.
- Enter the list name and, where available, its description and icon.
- Save the list, or create one from the place-saving screen when you are already viewing a location.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap You.
- Tap New list.
- Give the list a name and add the optional description or icon controls shown on your device.
- Save it, or create a list directly from a place’s Save flow.
Google’s labels and controls can change between app versions. If you do not see an icon or description field, create the list with its name first and edit the available fields later.
Add places to a list
Add one place from search or the map
- Search for a business, landmark, address, or other location, or select its pin on the map.
- Open the place details.
- Select Save.
- Choose the list that should contain the place. If necessary, create a new list in this same flow.
- Add a note if the list or the place needs extra context.
The same process works on desktop, Android, and iPhone/iPad, although the button position can differ. Saving a place does not automatically make the whole list public.
Move multiple saved places on Android
Google’s Android instructions document selecting multiple saved places and moving them into a list. In the You area, open your saved places, select the entries you want to change, and use the move-to-list action shown by the app. This is useful after importing a backlog into a temporary collection or when reorganizing a list by trip.
On platforms where bulk selection is not offered, open each place and repeat the individual Save process. Do not delete the original until you have confirmed that the destination list contains every intended place.
Find, edit, and clean up your lists
Open a list
- Desktop: open Saved.
- Android: open You, where Google also provides search and filters for your places.
- iPhone/iPad: open You and select the list you need.
Rename or revise list details
Open the list’s edit controls to rename it or change its description and icon when those fields are available. Use a consistent naming pattern—for example, “Trip: City” for travel lists—so search results remain understandable later.
Remove a place
Open the list, find the place, and use its remove control. Removing an entry from a list is not the same as deleting the place from Google Maps; the business or landmark remains searchable. If the place appears in more than one list, check each list separately.
Reorder entries
Google documents custom list ordering on Android. Open the list’s editing controls and use the ordering option to arrange places in the sequence you need, such as the order of stops in a day. A custom order is a planning aid, not turn-by-turn navigation, so open a place and start directions when you are ready to travel.

Hide or show a list on your map
Lists can have a display control that hides or shows their places on your main map. Hiding a list changes what you see; it does not change who else can access a shared list. To change access, use the list’s sharing settings instead. This distinction matters when a personal list is cluttering your map or when a group list should remain visible to collaborators.
Use notes and ordering to turn pins into a plan
A useful list answers more than “Where is this?” Add information that you would otherwise have to remember:
- What to order, see, or check at the place.
- Which entrance, neighborhood, or transit stop is most convenient.
- Whether a reservation, opening-time check, or accessibility check is needed.
- Who suggested the place in a shared planning list.
Keep notes concise enough to scan on a phone. Put changing details—such as opening hours or event dates—in a note only as a reminder to verify them, because the place’s live details can change independently of your saved text.
For an itinerary, combine a clear list name, custom order where available, and notes that identify the intended stop or timing. The list itself does not replace navigation, reservations, tickets, or an offline area download.
Share a list and collaborate safely
Choose view-only or editing access
Use the list’s share controls to copy a view link or invite collaborators to edit, depending on the controls available on your platform. View-only access suits a finished recommendation list. Editing access is appropriate when a group is still adding places and notes.
Understand what collaborators can see
Google says people who can view a shared list can see the names and profile pictures of people who joined it and who added or edited places and notes. Treat a shared list as an activity record, not an anonymous drop box. Do not put private information in place notes merely because the list is shared with a small group.
Remove editing access
Open the sharing options and remove a person’s editing access when the planning phase ends or membership changes. If someone should no longer see the list at all, use the available access-management control rather than only disabling edits.

Establish a group convention
Before inviting collaborators, agree on the list’s purpose and note format. For example, ask everyone to add a one-line reason for a suggestion and a date when a time-sensitive event matters. This prevents a shared list from becoming an unexplained collection of pins.
Keep the map readable while you work
Showing every saved list at once can cover the map with markers. Use the list visibility controls to display only the collection relevant to the current task—for example, show Trip: Kyoto while planning that itinerary and hide broad personal collections. Remember that this is a local display choice: it does not make a list private or public and does not alter collaborators’ permissions.
When a pin seems missing, first check whether its list is hidden, then search the list itself. A hidden list can still contain the place and remain shareable.
Lists, offline maps, and My Maps: choose the right tool
| Need | Google Maps list | Offline Maps | My Maps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collect named places for later | Best fit; save individual locations in purpose-based lists. | Not designed for place collections. | More capability than needed for a simple collection. |
| Use a map area without a data connection | Not an offline map. | Downloads a selected area to a mobile device; Google says availability is limited in some countries or regions. | Not the standard offline-download workflow. |
| Create and edit a custom map online | Limited to saved-place list behavior. | Does not provide custom map editing. | Google’s identified product for creating and editing custom maps online. |
| Collaborate on saved places | Share a list with view or edit access, subject to available controls. | Sharing behavior is not the purpose of an offline download. | Supports a different custom-map workflow. |
| Keep places out of the main map view | Use list hide/show controls. | Area visibility is unrelated to saved-list display. | Uses its own map presentation. |
These tools can be used together. A travel plan might use a shared list for restaurants and sights, an offline download for the destination area, and My Maps only if the project requires custom layers or map design.
Export your saved lists
Google’s list instructions point to Google Takeout for exporting saved data. In Takeout:
- Select Saved among the data products to include.
- Choose the destination for the export.
- Choose the export frequency.
- Select the file format offered by Takeout.
- Create the export and follow Google’s delivery instructions.
Export is useful before a major reorganization or when you need an archive outside Maps. It is not a live synchronization system: edits made later in Maps are not automatically reflected in an export you already created.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A list is approaching 3,000 entries
Google states that Saved Lists are limited to 3,000 entries and warns that larger lists may not display properly. Split the collection into smaller lists by geography, trip, category, or year. Keep an index list only if it remains comfortably below the limit and does not duplicate thousands of entries.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
The controls do not match these steps
Desktop, Android, and iPhone/iPad do not expose every control in the same place, and Google can change labels as Maps is updated. Confirm that you are in Saved on desktop or You on mobile, open the individual list, and look for its edit or three-dot menu. If a feature is documented for Android but absent on iPhone/iPad, use the platform that provides it or perform the change one place at a time.
A place is not appearing on the map
Open Saved or You and verify that the list containing the place is set to show on the map. If it is visible but the pin still cannot be found, search within the list and open the place details to confirm that the correct location was saved.
A collaborator cannot edit
Check whether the person received a view link rather than an edit invitation, and review the list’s sharing settings. Editing access can be removed independently of viewing access, so confirm the current permission before sending a new invitation.

A shared list reveals more activity than expected
Google says viewers can see the names and profile pictures of people who joined and who added or edited places and notes. Remove unintended viewers or editors in the sharing controls, and move sensitive planning details out of shared notes.
You need navigation without a connection
A saved list does not provide an offline map. Download the relevant area through Offline Maps before leaving reliable connectivity, and check whether downloads are available for your country or region. Keep the list for the places themselves and the offline download for area coverage.
A maintenance routine that keeps lists useful
- After saving: put the place in the correct list immediately instead of letting everything accumulate in one default collection.
- After a trip or outing: remove places you no longer need, move lasting favorites to a durable list, and add a brief note to anything worth remembering.
- Before sharing: hide unrelated lists from your own map, check the list name and description, and review every note for information the group should not see.
- Before a major trip: verify the list order, open key place details, and create an offline area download separately if connectivity may be unreliable.
- Periodically: split lists that approach the 3,000-entry limit and export Saved data through Google Takeout if you need an archive.
Frequently asked questions
Are Google Maps saved places private?
Yes, saved places are private unless you create and share a list. Sharing a list introduces the viewing or editing permissions you choose.
Can I use a list as an offline map?
No. Lists collect saved places. Offline Maps downloads a geographic area to a mobile device, and Google notes that downloads are not available in some regions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How many entries can one Saved List contain?
Google says the limit is 3,000 entries and that larger lists may not display properly. The help page does not state a year for this limit.
When should I use My Maps instead?
Use My Maps when you need to create and edit a custom map online, rather than simply organize saved locations in Google Maps lists.
