Google Maps uses “immersive” to describe several different experiences, not one switch. 3D map details add buildings, overpasses and terrain to active driving navigation; raised buildings are a separate route-view option; and Lens in Maps overlays walking directions on a camera view. Their menus, hardware requirements and safety rules differ.
To navigate, search for a destination, select Directions, choose a travel mode and tap Start. If Maps displays alternate routes as gray lines, tap the line you want. Then use Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation to adjust the controls available on your device.
What Google Maps’ immersive features actually are
Before changing a setting, identify which experience you mean. The following features are related visually but are not interchangeable.
| Feature | What you see | Where it works | Main control or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D map details | Three-dimensional buildings, overpasses, terrain and related detail while a driving route is active. | Google Maps on a phone, Android Auto and, on iPhone, supported CarPlay cities. | Turn on Map detail > 3D in Navigation settings. Google currently limits eligibility by country, device and app version. |
| Raised buildings routes | Buildings are emphasized or raised along the route rather than showing the full 3D detail treatment. | Documented as a separate Android navigation control; availability varies by context and platform. | Use the Navigation settings control or the expanded in-navigation information card when it is offered. |
| Lens in Maps | A camera view with arrows and prompts that help identify where to walk. | Android walking directions. | It is not a driving mode. Use the camera only when needed, then put the phone away. |
| Enhanced live lane guidance | More detailed lane information in navigation built into a car. | Only certain cars, countries and road segments. | Requires camera access to the Google Maps camera extension; it is not a universal phone setting. |
Google’s current help pages describe availability rather than a worldwide rollout. A missing option can therefore mean that the phone, city, vehicle, road segment or software version is not eligible, not that navigation is malfunctioning.

Prepare Maps before you start
Check location and audio permissions
Phone navigation needs a working GPS signal and permission for Maps to use your location. Spoken directions also require access to the device’s audio output. If either permission was denied, open the operating system’s app permissions for Maps, allow location while using the app (or the equivalent location choice shown on your device), and permit audio or Bluetooth output as appropriate.
Update the app and connect the intended display
For Android 3D map details, Google’s current documentation specifies Maps version 26.27 or later on eligible devices in the United States. Android Auto and CarPlay can show the navigation view only when the phone, vehicle and connection support it. Built-in car Maps follows a separate feature set from phone-based Maps, so a control available in one interface may not appear in another.
Understand the visual trade-off
When 3D map details are enabled during navigation, Google turns off the traffic and satellite layers. This is a deliberate display trade-off, not a failure of the traffic feed. If traffic conditions are more important than building detail, leave 3D off and use the standard map view.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to start navigation and choose a route
- Open Google Maps and search for the destination, or select it on the map.
- Tap Directions.
- Select the travel mode, such as driving or walking.
- Review the suggested route and any alternatives.
- Tap Start to begin turn-by-turn guidance.
Alternative routes appear as gray lines when they are available. Tap a gray line to switch to it before or during route selection. Compare the estimated time, road type and any visible traffic information before starting; Maps does not treat the first route as the only possible route.
During active navigation, expand the information card when you need route-related actions. Depending on platform and context, the card can expose route search, directions, traffic display, satellite map, raised buildings and Settings. Google does not promise the same set of actions on every phone, vehicle or software release.

How do I turn on 3D buildings in Google Maps navigation?
Android phone or Android Auto
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Map display, tap Map detail.
- Select 3D.
The setting affects active driving navigation on the mobile device and Android Auto; it is not a general three-dimensional map mode for every browsing situation. Google’s current Android help page says the feature is available in the United States on certain device types with Maps version 26.27 or above. It does not establish availability on every Android phone, every country or every city. See Google’s Android navigation instructions for the current eligibility wording.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Map display, choose Map detail.
- Select 3D.
Google specifies United States availability on iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, iPhone 14, or later models. The 3D details appear during active driving navigation on the phone and in CarPlay in supported cities. An older iPhone, an unsupported city or a route outside the stated coverage can leave the option unavailable. The iPhone and iPad navigation help page contains the current device and location limits.

What the 3D view shows
Eligible routes can display building forms, overpasses, terrain and related map detail while you drive. In an area that does not support the full 3D treatment, Maps may show raised buildings instead. That fallback is why two routes can look different even when the same 3D preference is enabled.
Why 3D changes back to 2D
Google says performance problems such as overheating or losing the connection can make navigation switch to 2D for the rest of that drive. Let the phone cool, restore a stable connection and start a new drive; Google says 3D can return on the next drive after performance recovers. Repeated switching suggests a device, connection or eligibility constraint rather than a hidden toggle.
Customize guidance volume, layers and raised buildings
Change spoken guidance volume
On a phone, open Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Guidance volume and select the level offered by your version of Maps. Check the phone’s media volume and the connected car’s audio source as well. When an iPhone is speaking through CarPlay, Google directs users to use the car’s own volume controls while the guidance prompt is playing.

Use raised buildings when the control is available
On Android, Google documents a separate Raised buildings routes control under Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation. During navigation, expand the information card and look for the raised-buildings action if you want to change it without leaving the route. The control may be absent on iPhone, in a particular city or in a particular navigation context; its absence does not mean that 3D map details are disabled incorrectly.

Choose between detail and traffic context
With 3D map details on, traffic and satellite layers are disabled during navigation. Use the standard map if congestion colors, incident context or satellite imagery are the deciding information. You can still change the route by selecting an alternate gray line when Maps presents one, but the map’s visual layers will follow the active 3D preference.
How do I change my route in Google Maps?
Switch to an alternate route
When route choices are shown, tap the gray route line you prefer. The selected route becomes the active guidance path and its arrival estimate updates. A gray line can disappear if traffic, road closures, your position or the destination changes, so choose the alternative before committing when the choice matters.
Change the destination or travel mode
Stop navigation, return to the destination screen, tap Directions, select the new travel mode and start again. Driving, walking and other modes have different visual guidance and eligibility; a setting that exists for driving cannot be assumed to carry into walking mode.
Use the built-in car route controls
Google Maps built into a car has its own documented flow for choosing another gray route and adding a stop. The controls are presented on the vehicle’s display rather than the phone’s Navigation settings. Manufacturer software, region and data-plan support can affect which actions are available. Google’s instructions are at Google Maps built into your car.

How do I make Google Maps show which lane to use?
Phone navigation and ordinary lane guidance
Lane information appears only where Maps has lane data for the road and route. There is no documented universal switch that forces lane arrows onto every phone route. Keep the map readable, follow the spoken instruction and treat the displayed lane as guidance rather than permission to make a sudden maneuver.
Enhanced live lane guidance in a built-in car
The enhanced feature is specific to supported car installations. Google says it requires allowing camera access to the Google Maps camera extension and is limited to certain cars, countries and road sections. Availability can also depend on the manufacturer, region and data plan. If the camera permission or the feature is missing, use the ordinary lane information supplied by that car and route instead of expecting a phone setting to enable it. Do not infer support for every vehicle from the presence of a camera or an in-dash Maps icon.
Before driving, open the vehicle’s Google Maps permissions or camera-extension prompt and grant access only if you are comfortable with it. If the option still does not appear, check the vehicle model, country and road coverage with the car maker or the current built-in-car help instructions; a road segment may simply not be covered.
Android Auto, CarPlay and phone screens are not identical
| Interface | What to expect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone | Navigation settings include Map detail, guidance volume and, where offered, raised buildings routes. | 3D eligibility is currently described for the United States, eligible device types and Maps 26.27 or later. |
| Android Auto | Eligible Android 3D details can appear during active driving navigation. | Phone, vehicle display and connection must all support the feature. |
| iPhone | Map detail > 3D can be selected in Navigation settings on eligible models. | Google specifies iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 14 or later in the United States. |
| CarPlay | 3D details can appear during active navigation in supported cities; guidance volume is adjusted with the car controls while speech plays. | City and vehicle support still apply. |
| Maps built into a car | Separate controls handle alternate routes, stops and enhanced lane guidance. | Feature coverage depends on car, country, road segment, manufacturer, region and data plan. |
This separation explains many apparently contradictory reports: a feature can work on a phone but not the car’s built-in Maps, or on one model of iPhone but not another.
How do I use Live View walking directions?
Google now documents the camera-based experience as Lens in Maps. It is a walking feature, not a driving version of 3D navigation.

- On an Android phone, search for a destination in Google Maps.
- Tap Directions.
- Select Walking.
- Tap Navigate.
- Follow the prompts that help Maps identify your location. When the camera view appears, use the real-world arrows and labels to orient yourself.
Lens in Maps is not intended for use in a moving vehicle. Google recommends raising the camera view only when needed—for example at the start, at a turn or near arrival—and putting the phone away once you no longer need the visual prompt. The complete Android procedure and safety guidance are in Google’s Lens in Maps help.
If Lens cannot locate you
- Move to a place with a clear view of nearby buildings or street signs so the camera can recognize landmarks.
- Confirm that Maps has location permission and that the phone’s location service is on.
- Use the normal walking map and spoken directions when lighting, crowds or a covered walkway make visual recognition unreliable.
- Do not keep the camera raised while crossing streets or navigating other hazards; stop in a safe place first.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
The 3D option is missing
- Confirm that you are in active driving navigation, not merely browsing the map.
- On Android, check that Maps is version 26.27 or later and that your device and country meet Google’s stated eligibility.
- On iPhone, check the supported model list and United States availability described by Google.
- If you are using Android Auto or CarPlay, verify the connection and whether the city or vehicle display supports the feature.
The map switched from 3D to 2D
Reduce heat and restore connectivity. Google says overheating or losing the connection can force 2D for the remainder of the current drive; test again on a later drive rather than repeatedly changing the setting while moving.
Traffic colors or satellite imagery disappeared
That is expected when 3D map details are enabled during navigation. Turn 3D off if those layers are more useful for your decision.

- Check Settings > Navigation > Guidance volume.
- Raise the phone’s media volume and select the correct Bluetooth or car audio source.
- In CarPlay, adjust the vehicle volume while Maps is speaking.

Lane guidance is absent
Lane data is not available on every road. For enhanced live lane guidance, verify camera-extension permission and the vehicle, country and road-segment limits. A phone setting cannot add coverage that Google or the car does not provide.
Lens arrows point the wrong way
Lower the phone, move to a safe stationary position and let Maps re-identify the surroundings. Poor GPS reception, obstructed landmarks or a crowded streetscape can make camera orientation unreliable. Switch to the regular walking map until the position is stable.
Safety and privacy choices
Driving navigation should be configured before the car moves. Do not handle the phone to change a route, grant a camera permission or inspect a 3D view while driving; use a passenger or pull over safely. Lens in Maps requires camera use and is expressly unsuitable for a moving vehicle. Enhanced live lane guidance in a built-in car also requires camera access, so review the vehicle’s permission prompt and understand that availability is constrained by the car and road rather than guaranteed by the app.
For the authoritative, changing eligibility details, consult Google’s Android navigation page, iPhone and iPad navigation page, built-in-car page and Lens in Maps page.
