You can’t use the regular Gemini app for general chat offline. Google says Gemini requires an internet connection, and its Mac app requires a stable connection for its features. Google does offer a separate, limited exception: Gemini Nano can power specific on-device features in supported Android apps and Pixel features. That does not make the Gemini chat app an offline chatbot.

The practical distinction is between asking Gemini a broad question through the consumer app and using a particular feature designed to run on your device. The first needs internet; the second may work without reliable service if your device, app, and task are supported. If you are preparing for a flight, a trip through a dead zone, or an unreliable mobile connection, plan around that distinction rather than expecting the chat app to switch modes.

Does the regular Gemini app work offline?

No. Google’s Gemini product FAQ says an internet connection is required. For the Mac app, Google specifically says a stable internet connection is required to use Gemini’s features. Gemini Apps can be used on the web, but Google’s computer-use instructions describe submitting a prompt and do not document an offline chat mode. The official documentation reviewed here does not describe a setting that switches the consumer Gemini app from cloud chat to offline chat.

In practice, expect a new prompt in the regular app or on the web to need a live connection. A page you opened earlier, a locally saved document, or a prompt you prepared in advance does not make the cloud chat model available when you lose service. Likewise, a weak connection is still a connection problem: Google’s reviewed documentation does not promise a low-bandwidth mode or say that changing prompt length, turning off images, or using a browser will let general Gemini chat work without service.

This applies whether you type a question or use another interaction supported by the mobile app. Google lists text, voice, image, camera, and connected-service capabilities for the Gemini mobile app, but those capabilities are not a promise that each can operate offline. Don’t assume that having a conversation open, having used the app recently, or having the Gemini app installed means it can answer the next question after service disappears.

Google’s Gemini product FAQ states the internet requirement. The Mac app help page specifies a stable connection, while Gemini’s computer-use help explains web access and prompt submission.

What can work without reliable internet?

Some features built around Gemini Nano can run on the device rather than sending each task to the cloud. Gemini Nano is a separate on-device model used by supported Android features and apps; it is not an offline mode inside the general Gemini chat experience. Its availability and capabilities depend on the device, the app or feature, and the specific task.

Google’s Android developer documentation describes access to Nano through Android system components and developer tools such as ML Kit GenAI APIs. In May 2025, Android Developers said that the functionality of those on-device APIs remains the same without a reliable internet connection. That statement applies to supported APIs and their on-device use cases—not to general Gemini chat.

That distinction matters because “Gemini” can refer to more than one product experience. A consumer chat prompt is not automatically routed to Gemini Nano just because the phone contains an on-device model. Nano capabilities are exposed through apps and features that integrate them. A reader cannot use the existence of Nano as evidence that the regular Gemini app will keep a conversation going in airplane mode or in a place with no coverage.

Which Pixel features does Google identify as offline-capable?

Google identifies Pixel Studio, Call Notes, and Pixel Screenshots as Gemini Nano-powered features that can be available offline on Pixel 9 and later devices. This is a limited set of supported features, not evidence that the regular Gemini app can answer arbitrary questions without a connection. Check the compatibility and availability for the specific feature and device you plan to use; support for one Nano-powered feature does not establish support for every other Nano feature.

These are purpose-specific experiences. Pixel Studio, Call Notes, and Pixel Screenshots are named as features, not as a general-purpose offline chat interface. If your need is, for example, to ask a series of unrelated questions, develop an idea through follow-ups, or have Gemini work through a broad topic, the Pixel feature list does not promise that use. If your need matches one of the named tasks, check the feature’s availability on the particular phone and test it before relying on it away from service.

Google’s Pixel Gemini Nano page names those features and the Pixel 9-and-later boundary. It is relevant if you need a particular on-device task, but buying a Pixel should not be treated as a way to get full offline Gemini chat.

How to prepare for travel or an unreliable connection

If you expect to lose service, plan around what you can do locally rather than assuming Gemini will keep working. These steps cannot turn cloud chat into offline chat; they help you distinguish tasks that need Gemini online from tasks a supported on-device feature may handle.

  • Gemini AI Integration: Built-in Gemini AI assistant supercharges your productivity and creativity, helping you accomplish tasks faster, generate content, and unlock new possibilities right from your smartphone without needing additional apps or subscriptions
  1. Decide whether you need general chat or a specific task. Open-ended follow-up questions belong to the regular Gemini chat experience and require a connection. A supported task such as summarizing, proofreading, rewriting, smart replies, or image description may be available through a compatible on-device implementation. Be specific about the job you need done: “I want an assistant for any question” is different from “I need a supported app feature to summarize text.”
  2. Check the exact device and feature before you go. For a Pixel feature, verify that your model and the named feature are supported. For other Android apps, confirm that the app actually integrates Gemini Nano; the model’s existence on Android does not mean every app can use it. Compatibility with one feature does not establish that another feature is available on the same device.
  3. Try the feature while you still have reliable service. Confirm that it is available and learn where it appears in the app or device feature you plan to use. Do not wait until you are disconnected to discover that your device, app, or task is unsupported. Testing also lets you see whether the feature handles the specific kind of input you intend to use, within its limits.
  4. Keep cloud-dependent work for when you are connected. Draft a question elsewhere if useful, but treat it as a prepared prompt, not a stored offline Gemini conversation. Submit it when internet access returns. If you need to preserve information for later, keep the relevant text or file in an appropriate local app rather than assuming Gemini will cache the conversation for offline use.
  5. Use the appropriate fallback for the task. If the task is not available through an on-device feature, use a non-AI local tool or wait for a connection rather than expecting Gemini chat to continue offline. For example, choose a tool that already works locally for notes or document access when those are the tasks you need to complete.

Google’s mobile-app help describes text, voice, image, camera, and connected-service capabilities, but it does not document offline general chat. See What you can do with your Gemini mobile app to understand the range of app interactions without mistaking those capabilities for offline support.

What Gemini Nano can and cannot do

Nano is intended for narrower, supported tasks that an app can run locally. Google’s developer materials give examples including summarizing, proofreading, rewriting, smart replies, and image description. The exact feature set depends on the implementation; these examples are not a promise that every Nano-compatible device offers each task or that every task works without any setup or connection.

Think of those examples as possible uses of an integrated feature, not as a checklist of functions available in a standalone Nano app. An app may expose a particular task in its own interface, while a different app may implement a different task or none at all. The important question is not only whether the phone supports Nano, but whether the feature you intend to use is implemented for that device and task.

  • It can provide local processing for supported features. In an app or feature that integrates Nano, some processing can happen on the device, which is why some tasks can remain functional without reliable internet. Android Developers described this for ML Kit GenAI APIs in May 2025; it is about those supported on-device APIs rather than all Gemini products.
  • It has limits. Google notes constraints involving hardware, token limits, and model capability. A request may exceed what a particular implementation can handle, even if another Nano-powered feature is available on the same device. Do not treat successful use of one small, defined task as proof that the model can take on unrestricted chat or a much longer, more complex request.
  • It is not a user switch for Gemini chat. ML Kit GenAI APIs are tools for supported Android apps to integrate on-device Nano capabilities. They are not a setting that a user can enable in Gemini Apps to replace cloud chat. If you are not an app developer, the practical path is to use a compatible app or device feature that already offers the on-device task.

For technical details, consult Google’s Gemini Nano developer documentation and its explanation of offline use and model limitations. Android Developers’ October 1, 2024 post on Nano privacy and safety also describes its narrower task capabilities.

What to expect on a weak connection

A weak connection does not make regular Gemini chat an offline feature. If a request fails or takes too long, the available official guidance here does not establish a minimum speed, a data-use figure, or a specific low-bandwidth setting to change. It is safer to treat the problem as connectivity-related and retry when the connection is more reliable than to assume that a shorter prompt or a text-only request will work.

There is also no basis here for promising that switching from the app to a browser, turning off image input, or shortening a prompt will make Gemini usable without service. Those may sound like plausible troubleshooting ideas, but Google’s reviewed help pages do not document them as offline or low-bandwidth workarounds. If a prompt does not go through, the dependable choice is to reconnect and try again rather than repeatedly changing input formats in expectation of an offline mode.

  • For a cloud chat request: wait until you have a usable internet connection, then submit or retry the prompt.
  • For a supported on-device feature: use that feature in its own app or device context, and recognize that its hardware and task limits still apply.
  • For work you cannot postpone: choose a local tool that already performs the task without a network connection, rather than relying on the Gemini app as a fallback.

There is no documented general offline switch in the reviewed Gemini help pages, and no published bandwidth threshold in the cited material. Do not infer either from the fact that certain Nano features can work offline.

How to choose the right option

  • You need broad, conversational help: use the regular Gemini app when you have internet access. Nano-powered Pixel features do not replace open-ended chat.
  • You need one of a few supported tasks while disconnected: check whether your exact Android device and the relevant app or Pixel feature support on-device Gemini Nano for that task.
  • You have a weak rather than absent connection: expect cloud chat to depend on that connection, and do not count on an undocumented low-data mode.
  • You are considering a device for offline use: make the decision based on the particular offline feature you need, not on a promise of a full offline Gemini assistant.

The options are not interchangeable. General chat is the right fit when you want flexible questions and follow-up dialogue, but it needs internet. An integrated Nano feature is worth checking when you have a defined task and a compatible app or device, but it may be narrower than what you want to ask. A local non-AI tool is the dependable fallback when the task must be completed with no connection and there is no supported Nano feature for it.

There is no meaningful speed, data, or price comparison to make from Google’s published information cited here: the materials do not provide a minimum bandwidth threshold, a data-consumption estimate, or a price for enabling offline chat. More importantly, a device purchase cannot remove the cloud requirement for general Gemini chat. A Pixel 9 or later may be relevant for the named Nano-powered offline features, but buy one only if those particular features meet your need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Gemini app in airplane mode?

Not for general chat. Google says Gemini requires an internet connection, and its help pages do not document an offline chat setting. Airplane mode does not make the consumer Gemini chat model available locally. A separate supported Gemini Nano feature may work offline on a compatible device, but it is not the same as chatting with Gemini.

Can I keep an existing Gemini conversation open and continue it offline?

Do not count on it. Previously opened pages, saved files, or a prepared prompt do not make the cloud chat model available after you lose service. Save information you need in a local app and submit Gemini prompts when you have a connection.

Does Gemini work with a weak connection if I use shorter prompts or text only?

Google’s reviewed documentation does not promise a low-bandwidth mode or say that shorter prompts, text-only requests, or switching to a browser will work without service. There is no published minimum speed or data-use figure in the cited guidance, so retry when the connection is more reliable.

What Gemini features can work without reliable internet?

Some supported on-device Gemini Nano implementations can handle tasks such as summarizing, proofreading, rewriting, smart replies, or image description. Availability depends on the device, app integration, hardware, and task. The examples do not mean all features are available on every Nano-capable device.

Which Pixel phones and features does Google name for offline use?

Google identifies Pixel Studio, Call Notes, and Pixel Screenshots as Gemini Nano-powered features that can be available offline on Pixel 9 and later devices. Check the exact feature and device support. This does not make the regular Gemini app an offline chatbot.

Can I turn on Gemini Nano in the Gemini app?

Google’s reviewed consumer help pages do not document an offline switch for Gemini chat. ML Kit GenAI APIs and other developer tools let supported Android apps integrate on-device Nano capabilities; they are not user settings for replacing the cloud model in Gemini Apps.

Should I buy a Pixel to use Gemini offline?

Only if one of the specific supported offline features is what you need. Google identifies certain Nano-powered features for Pixel 9 and later, but a Pixel is not a solution for offline general Gemini chat. Confirm compatibility and feature availability before choosing a device.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The regular Gemini app needs internet for general chat, and Google does not document a consumer setting that turns it into an offline assistant. Some supported Gemini Nano features can work without reliable service on compatible Android devices, including Pixel Studio, Call Notes, and Pixel Screenshots on Pixel 9 and later. Check the exact feature and device, test it before traveling, and use a local fallback for anything it does not support.
