Keep every follow-up in the same Google AI Mode conversation. Open AI Mode at google.com/ai, from the AI Mode control in Google Search, or in the Google app. Ask a complete first question, then use the same Ask anything field for follow-ups. Google says AI Mode carries context from earlier questions so you can refine the intent instead of repeating the entire request.
For continuity after you leave, use AI Mode history. Search history and personalization settings affect whether an earlier thread can be reopened. Because Google labels AI Mode experimental and warns that it can make mistakes, check the linked web sources before relying on an answer.
How to ask a follow-up question in Google AI Mode
AI Mode treats a sequence of questions as one conversation. The first prompt establishes the subject and constraints; later prompts can narrow, compare, transform or challenge the answer. The essential rule is simple: do not start a new Google search for the follow-up if you want the previous context. Continue typing in the same Ask anything bar shown beneath the AI Mode response.
1. Open AI Mode
- Go to
google.com/ai, or open Google Search and select the AI Mode control below the Search bar. - In the Google app, select the AI Mode entry when it is available for your account and device.
- Wait for the AI Mode conversation screen and locate the Ask anything field.
The exact control and placement can change as Google rolls the experience out. If you do not see AI Mode, the account, device, region or current rollout may not support it yet.

2. Make the first question complete
Put the information that should govern the whole conversation into the opening prompt. Include the topic, location, date range, audience, budget, comparison criteria and any exclusions. AI Mode is intended for complex questions and can organize an answer with links, so a precise starting point gives later references something stable to attach to.
For example, instead of asking “What laptop should I buy?”, start with “Compare lightweight Windows laptops for a university student in Canada, under CAD 1,200, available this year, prioritizing battery life over gaming performance.” A later message can then refer to “the second option” or “the same budget” without rebuilding the request.
3. Continue in the same thread
After the response appears, type the next request in that conversation’s Ask anything field. References such as “the second option,” “that 2025 rule” or “my original budget” work when only one earlier item clearly matches. Google describes this as carrying context from previous questions to refine your intent.
Use a short restatement when a reference could point to more than one thing. “Keep the CAD 1,200 ceiling and compare only the two laptops with the longest battery estimates” is safer than “Which one is best?” after a long exchange.
How to preserve context through a longer conversation
Keep the important constraint visible
AI Mode may have several facts in its conversation memory, but a critical constraint should not be left to an ambiguous pronoun. Repeat the one or two details that determine the decision: “Use the same apartment size and budget, but prioritize low noise.” This is not restarting the search; it is anchoring the follow-up to the correct branch.
Change one variable at a time
Follow-ups are easiest to audit when each message changes one dimension. Start with the general comparison, then change location, budget, date or priority in separate turns. If you change all of them at once, it becomes difficult to tell whether the answer still uses the original evidence.

Ask for transformations explicitly
AI Mode can reshape information already discussed. State the desired output and the audience:

- “Keep the same budget, but prioritize battery life.”
- “Compare the two options you just listed for a small apartment.”
- “Use the article you cited and tell me what changed after 2025.”
- “What assumption in your last answer is least certain?”
These prompts tell AI Mode whether to summarize, filter, update or critique the previous answer instead of asking it to infer the operation.
Use a precise correction if the answer drifts
If the response starts discussing a different subject, name the original topic and the constraint that matters most: “Return to the Canadian laptop comparison; keep the CAD 1,200 maximum and compare only models from the first answer.” A concise correction is safer than continuing with “it” or “that one” when several entities now appear in the thread.
Can you add a photo, voice message or file to a follow-up?
AI Mode supports text, voice, images and files, depending on the available experience on your device and account. A new input can supply evidence or context for the same conversation rather than forcing you to describe it manually.
Text
Text is the most predictable format for preserving constraints. Include the exact change you want, such as “Use the same comparison, but exclude refurbished products.”

Voice
Voice is useful when a follow-up is easier to speak, but review the transcribed request for names, numbers and units. A misheard budget or date can silently alter the thread’s direction.

Image
An image can provide visual context for a follow-up. You might attach a photograph and ask AI Mode to identify the visible components, then ask which of the previously discussed options fits them. Availability and supported image features vary by device and account.
File
A file can supply a document, specification sheet or other source for analysis in the same conversation. State what to extract and how it relates to the earlier question, for example: “Use this specification sheet to verify the battery claim for option two.” File support and limits depend on the current AI Mode experience.
How to continue a Google AI search later
When you need to leave and return, reopen the conversation through AI Mode history. Google says Search history and personalization settings provide the best experience for picking up where you left off, so continuity depends on those settings and on whether the thread remains available for your account.

- Open the AI Mode area and select AI Mode history.
- Choose the earlier thread, check that the original question and answer are present, and continue in its Ask anything field.
- If the thread is missing, verify that Search history and personalization are enabled as appropriate for your account, then search for the topic again with the key constraints.
History is a recovery mechanism, not a guarantee that every previous answer will remain available. Rollouts and account settings can change, and a conversation that cannot be retrieved should be re-established with a concise summary of the original subject and constraints.
What to do when AI Mode forgets the first question
Context loss usually appears as an answer that changes the subject, ignores a budget or location, or treats “the second option” as if no options existed. Work through these checks in order.
Check that you are still in the same conversation
A new Search tab, a fresh AI Mode session or a manually typed URL can start without the prior thread. Return to the original conversation and use its Ask anything field. If you resumed through history, confirm that the displayed thread contains the first question.

Replace ambiguous references
After many turns, “it,” “they” and “the last one” may have multiple possible meanings. Name the item and repeat the governing constraint: “For the second laptop in your first table, keep the Canadian availability requirement and explain the warranty.”
Restate only what is necessary
A full copy of the conversation is rarely needed. Restate the topic plus one or two decisive constraints, then ask the new question. This gives AI Mode a clean anchor while avoiding a second, potentially conflicting version of every detail.
Challenge the assumption
Ask, “Which assumption from your last answer is least certain?” or “What information would change this recommendation?” The response can expose a missing date, location or source that caused the apparent drift.
Open and inspect the linked sources
AI Mode can make mistakes. Open the web links attached to the response, check the publication date and original publisher, and compare the source’s wording with the claim. If the answer cites an old page, ask for information after a specified date and verify the result independently.
Does Google AI Mode remember previous questions?
Within an active thread, Google says AI Mode carries context from earlier questions to refine intent. That is conversational continuity, not a promise that every past search is permanently remembered. Continuing in the same thread gives the model the best chance of resolving references; starting a new search removes that immediate conversation context.

If you need a durable record, save the important source pages or copy the final checklist rather than relying only on the conversation list.

Availability, account and subscription limits
Google documents AI Mode through Search, the Google app and google.com/ai. The basic follow-up workflow is described as an AI Mode Search function, while some agentic capabilities are limited to Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. Those subscription-only features are separate from asking follow-up questions in a thread.
Access can change as Google expands or tests the product. A missing control does not necessarily mean the feature has been discontinued; it may reflect a staged rollout, account eligibility, device support or regional availability. Check the current controls shown in your signed-in Search experience.

How to verify an AI Mode follow-up before acting
- Open the cited pages. Do not treat a generated summary as a substitute for the linked source.
- Check dates. Confirm that the page covers the period, version or policy your question asks about.
- Check the original publisher. Prefer the primary organization, official documentation or first-party announcement when the claim concerns a product, rule or availability.
- Test the key assumption. Ask AI Mode what evidence supports the recommendation and which uncertainty could reverse it.
- Confirm location and account scope. A feature, price or subscription capability may apply only to a particular country, account type or rollout.
Google’s product information states that AI Mode is experimental and may make mistakes. Use its links to evaluate information, especially for decisions involving money, safety, deadlines or compliance.
A practical conversation pattern
The following sequence shows how to preserve context without repeating a full prompt:
- Set the scope: “Compare two internet plans for a small apartment in Dublin, available this month, under €50 per month, prioritizing reliable video calls.”
- Clarify an item: “Which of the two has the lower installation cost? Keep the same apartment and monthly budget.”
- Change one priority: “Now prioritize upload speed, but keep the location and €50 ceiling.”
- Request evidence: “Open the sources for the plan you recommend and tell me the publication dates.”
- Stress-test it: “What assumption in that recommendation is least certain?”
- Transform the result: “Turn the verified choice into a three-step signup checklist.”
Each turn identifies the operation and preserves the constraints that should not change. If the thread later drifts, restate the subject and the two most important limits before asking the next question.
