Need to rewrite a message, identify something in a photo, or talk through a plan? The Gemini app for iPhone can handle those kinds of tasks by text, voice, photo, or a Live conversation. It requires iOS 16 or later, and access to particular features can depend on your location, language, age, account, and rollout.
What you need before using Gemini on iPhone
Install the Gemini app from the App Store on an iPhone running iOS 16 or later. Google says availability also depends on language, country or territory, age, and account eligibility. Its availability page lists more than 150 countries for the mobile app overall; that is not a promise that every feature works in each location. See Google’s current availability details.

What can Gemini do on an iPhone?
You can type or speak a prompt, submit a photo, ask about an image from your camera, or start Gemini Live for a back-and-forth conversation. Google also lists writing help, translation, summaries, image creation, and planning with Maps and Flights among the app’s capabilities. The available options can vary. Google’s feature guide outlines supported uses.

Try a text prompt for writing or an explanation
- Open the Gemini app and choose the text-entry field.
- State the task and include the tone, audience, and constraints that matter. For example: “Rewrite this message to sound warm and direct. Keep it under 80 words: [paste your draft].”
- Read the result. If it misses the mark, ask for a specific change, such as a shorter version or a less formal tone.
- Copy the wording only after checking names, facts, and implications. Gemini can propose language; you decide whether it says what you mean.
For learning, ask for a plain-language explanation and a worked example, then follow up on any step you do not understand. That is often more useful than requesting a one-line definition.
Can Gemini look at a photo?
Yes. You can submit a photo or ask Gemini about an image using the app’s camera option, where available. This is useful for asking about an object, scene, or visible details, but the response is an interpretation—not proof of identity, condition, or safety.

- Open Gemini and choose the image or camera control.
- Select an existing photo or point the camera at the subject and capture an image.
- Ask a focused question, such as “What details in this picture suggest this is a houseplant?” or “Read the sign and summarize its directions.”
- Check the result against the image, especially for small text, ambiguous objects, or consequential decisions.
How do I use Gemini Live on iPhone?
Gemini Live is designed for spoken, back-and-forth conversation. Start Live from the Gemini app using the Live control if it appears for your account. Ask a question aloud, listen to the response, and continue with follow-ups rather than trying to fit the whole task into one prompt.
Google’s Gemini Live instructions also cover sharing your camera or screen during a conversation. Screen sharing sends your full screen, not just the app or item you want to discuss, and requires Gemini Live notifications to be enabled. Avoid showing private messages, account details, or another person’s information without permission. Use the sharing controls to stop sharing when finished, or end the Live conversation.

Use Connected Apps only if you want them
Connected Apps are optional integrations with services. On iOS, Google says you must sign in and have Keep Activity turned on to use them. You choose which apps to connect, and can disconnect them in settings. Review the permissions and information involved before enabling a connection; availability and controls may vary. See Google’s Connected Apps instructions.
Accuracy, privacy, and other limits
- Verify important answers. Gemini can make mistakes. Google advises: “Don’t rely on Gemini’s responses as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.” Check high-stakes information with a qualified professional or authoritative source.
- Be deliberate about what you share. Prompts, photos, and shared screens may contain personal information. Review the image or screen before submitting or sharing it, and stop screen sharing when you no longer need it.
- Expect features to differ. Language, location, account type, age eligibility, and rollout can affect what appears in the app. A missing feature does not necessarily mean the app is malfunctioning.
What about Gems?
Google says Gems can be used in the mobile app, but creating or editing them is web-only, and Gems cannot be used with Live. Google’s help page announces that Gems on personal accounts will transition to skills starting in November 2026. The change is scheduled for the near future as of October 2026, so check Google’s Gems help page for the current status and account-specific details.

Gemini in Chrome is a separate feature
Gemini features in Chrome on iPhone are separate from the Gemini app. They have their own availability and rollout requirements; an option in Chrome should not be assumed to be present just because the app is available. Google documents those distinctions in its Gemini in Chrome availability guide.
