To explode TNT in Minecraft, place a TNT block and use flint and steel on it. For a remote or redstone-built trigger, power the TNT directly or power a block next to it. Once lit, get clear of the blast.
How to ignite TNT with flint and steel

Place a TNT block where you want the explosion.

Hold flint and steel and use it on the TNT. Minecraft’s flint-and-steel guide confirms this ignites TNT.

Move away from the TNT after lighting it. The blast can harm players and damage nearby structures.

How to activate TNT with redstone
Redstone is useful when you want to trigger TNT remotely or make it part of a mechanism. Connect a redstone signal to the TNT, or power a block adjacent to it. Microsoft’s Minecraft Creator guide describes both activation options and gives a fuse of 40 redstone ticks.

Build the trigger so you can activate it from a safe distance, then leave the blast area as soon as the TNT is primed.
Which TNT ignition method should you use?

The flint-and-steel method is direct; redstone adds a trigger mechanism and distance. The 40-redstone-tick fuse applies to the redstone activation described in Microsoft’s guide.

Other ways to ignite TNT
The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki explosion tutorial also lists fire charges, flaming arrows, Fire Aspect, and nearby explosions as possible ignition methods. These options can depend on the edition or version, so check the mechanics for the game you are playing if an exact method matters.

Avoid fire-based ignition beside wooden builds, forests, or other flammable blocks. Minecraft warns that fire can spread through wooden structures and forests in its flint-and-steel guide.
Does TNT explode underwater?
Underwater TNT behavior depends on the edition and variant. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial says ordinary TNT underwater damages entities but does not damage terrain; it also notes an underwater TNT variant in Minecraft Education. Since these details are community-sourced and edition-specific, verify them against the version you are playing.

Are snapshot TNT mechanics different?
Yes. The Java 26.2 Snapshot 5 notes describe TNT absorbed by a Sulfur Cube: redstone, fire sources, or nearby explosions can prime it, with a six-second fuse for fire or redstone and a randomized 0.75-to-3-second fuse for an explosion. Those are snapshot-specific Sulfur Cube mechanics, not the general fuse for ordinary TNT. See the snapshot notes for that feature.
