FilePond handles file selection and upload in the browser; your Node.js application must provide the upload route, parse the multipart request, store the file, and return an identifier. For a basic asynchronous integration, point FilePond’s server.process option at an Express route that accepts multipart/form-data and responds with the stored upload’s unique ID as plain text.
What FilePond needs from a Node.js backend
FilePond is the client-side uploader, not a hosted upload service: installing its JavaScript package does not create a Node.js endpoint. Its server API defines a contract for your application to implement. PQINA describes asynchronous uploading as “processing” in its server API documentation.
For the basic flow, FilePond sends a POST request with multipart/form-data. The server parses the request, places the upload in an application-controlled temporary location, assigns or associates a unique identifier, and returns that identifier as text/plain. FilePond can use the identifier in later operations such as reverting or restoring the upload.
Install and configure FilePond in the browser
Install FilePond in the browser-facing project with your package manager, then import and initialize it in that application. The getting-started guide shows the Node-module approach. The minimal server configuration points the process action to your Node.js route:

});Here, inputElement is the file input used to create the pond. The path must resolve to a route served by your application, either directly or through your deployment’s routing or proxy setup. FilePond’s server API can also be configured with separate endpoint URLs for other actions; add those only when your application implements them.
Parse the upload on an Express route
Express does not parse multipart file uploads on its own. Multer is middleware for multipart/form-data; install it in the Node.js application and attach it to the upload route. The exact multipart field name must match between FilePond and Multer. For example, if the upload arrives in a field named filepond, use upload.single('filepond'). Multer exposes the parsed file as req.file.

});This is a route pattern, not a complete storage implementation: registerTemporaryUpload represents application-specific logic to validate and track the received file and return its ID. Configure a real private temporary directory for your environment and ensure your ID maps to the stored upload. Multer recommends applying its middleware to routes that handle uploads rather than using it as global middleware; see the Express Multer documentation.
Match FilePond’s request shape
FilePond may send metadata along with the file under the same field name. Make sure the multipart parser and route logic account for the actual request shape rather than assuming the request contains only a file. Confirm the configured field name and inspect what the route receives in your application.

Treat the original filename and other client-supplied metadata as untrusted input. Choose application-specific controls for file type and content validation, size limits, authentication and authorization, storage permissions, retention, and cleanup. FilePond’s protocol does not decide those policies for you.
Implement additional FilePond server actions only when needed
A process-only endpoint supports the basic asynchronous upload. Other FilePond behaviors require corresponding backend routes. The methods and purposes below are defined by the FilePond server API.

Configure an endpoint in FilePond only if the application has implemented the matching behavior. In particular, do not return an identifier from process without a corresponding way to associate that ID with the stored upload and, if you enable revert or restore, handle its lifecycle.
Choose compatible package documentation
Check the FilePond major version installed in your project before copying examples. The npm listing identifies FilePond 4.32.12 and shows installation with npm install filepond; the current v5 getting-started documentation uses beta installation examples and describes a newer web-component interface. Those references are not interchangeable instructions for every project. Use the documentation that matches your lockfile and API.

The Express documentation identifies Multer 2.2.0; dependency versions can change, so check your project’s lockfile and current package documentation when installing or upgrading.
Decide where uploads live and how long they last
FilePond specifies the request and response behavior, but it does not prescribe one canonical Node.js storage architecture. A temporary local directory may suit a single-server development setup, while an application that needs durable or shared storage must select and implement an appropriate storage layer. In either case, keep upload records tied to their identifiers, restrict access, and define when temporary files are deleted. The choice depends on your deployment and retention requirements; the FilePond protocol alone does not establish a universally best storage provider.
