Eye Tracking lets you control a supported iPhone by looking at on-screen items. After you calibrate it, you can hold your gaze on an item to select it—a hands-free accessibility option that uses the iPhone’s front-facing camera, not a separate eye-tracking accessory.
What Eye Tracking does
Apple describes the feature simply: “With Eye Tracking, you can control iPhone using just your eyes.” The pointer follows your gaze, and holding your eyes steady—called dwelling—can trigger an action such as a tap. By default, an outline marks the item you’re viewing.
Eye Tracking is designed as a mobility accessibility feature. It can be used alongside other controls, rather than replacing them for everyone. Apple also documents Head Tracking, Voice Control, Siri, assistive devices, and external keyboards as mobility options; each uses a different method of control. How to turn on and calibrate Eye Tracking

Open Settings > Accessibility > Eye Tracking.

Turn on Eye Tracking and follow the on-screen dot with your eyes to complete calibration.

After calibration, look at an item. The selection outline follows your gaze; hold your gaze steady to dwell and activate the default tap action.
Apple says calibration is required every time Eye Tracking is turned on. If your face or iPhone position changes and recalibration is needed, calibration may start automatically. Apple’s setup and control instructions explain the process.

Set up the phone for reliable tracking
The front-facing camera needs a clear view of your face. Apple recommends adequate light on your face and placing the iPhone on a stable surface about a foot and a half away. A stand may help keep the phone steady at that distance, but Apple does not say one is required. If tracking becomes unreliable after you move, check the camera view, lighting, and phone position, then allow recalibration if prompted. Apple’s Eye Tracking guide provides this setup guidance.

Eye Tracking includes options for pointer smoothing, Snap to Item, Zoom on Keyboard Keys, Auto-Hide, Dwell Control, and Show Face Guidance. The exact behavior can therefore be adjusted to suit how you navigate and select items.

With Snap to Item turned off, the dwell pointer appears where you are looking and a timer starts; when the timer completes, the default action is a tap. You can also change pointer size and color under Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. For additional gestures and physical button actions, use AssistiveTouch. Apple documents these controls in its Eye Tracking instructions.
Which iPhones support Eye Tracking?
Apple’s current compatibility list includes iPhone SE (3rd generation); iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max; the listed models in the iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 families; iPhone 16e; iPhone Air; iPhone 17e; and iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Model availability and the compatibility list can change, so check Apple’s current list of iPhones that support Eye Tracking for your exact model.

Apple’s iOS 18 release notes described Eye Tracking at introduction as available on iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation). The notes page is dated August 18, 2026; the current model list is the more useful reference for checking later additions. Apple’s iOS 18 update notes provide the introduction-era context.
What to know about privacy and limitations
Apple states: “All data used to set up and control Eye Tracking is processed on device.” The feature still depends on the camera being able to see your face clearly, sufficient face lighting, a stable phone position, and calibration; Apple’s guidance does not establish that it will track reliably in every lighting or positioning condition.
