To use double pinch on a Pixel Watch, tap your index finger and thumb together twice on the hand that wears the watch, when an on-screen hint shows that the gesture is available. Google documents the feature only for Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 running Wear OS 6.1 or later. This guide explains how the gesture works, where it applies, and what to check when it does not respond.
What double pinch does
Double pinch is a hand gesture. Google’s Pixel Watch Help page defines it this way: “Double pinch: Tap your index finger and thumb together twice to take control on Pixel Watch.” Because it uses the hand that wears the watch, you can trigger it without touching the screen or lifting your other hand. That is the main reason it is useful: it lets you act on a few common prompts while your hands are busy.
The gesture is not a global command that works everywhere on the watch. Google describes it as context-sensitive, meaning it responds only when the current screen supports it.
Which watches and software support it
Google’s Help page states: “This feature is only available on Google Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 with Wear OS version 6.1 and later.” The Pixel Watch 4 is included in that list, and the Pixel Watch 3 and 5 are named alongside it. Check two things before you look for the gesture:
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
- Watch model: Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, or Pixel Watch 5. Older Pixel Watch generations are not listed on the Help page.
- Software version: Wear OS 6.1 or later. Google’s accessibility overview notes that Pixel Watch features can vary by device capability and software version, so an updated watch is the first thing to confirm.
Google’s Help page does not give one universal settings path for turning the gesture on or off across every supported model and build. If you cannot find a gesture setting on your watch, rely on the on-screen hints described below rather than a menu location you have read elsewhere.
How to perform the gesture
- Confirm that your watch is a supported model and runs Wear OS 6.1 or later.
- Open a screen where double pinch applies, such as an incoming call or a photo countdown. Watch for a hint that shows the gesture is available. Google says helpful hints appear where double pinch can be used.
- Bring your index finger and thumb together on the hand wearing the watch, then separate them and bring them together a second time. Use a deliberate, two-tap motion rather than a continuous rub.
- Check the screen for the result. The action the hint offered should happen, such as answering the call or capturing the photo.
Where the gesture is used
Google’s March 2026 Pixel Drop announcement gives examples of double pinch and wrist turn being used to answer calls, take a photo, or pause workout music without touching the screen. These are examples of intended use, not a complete list. Which actions appear on a given screen depends on the app and the moment, so treat each prompt as the authority.

Answering calls
When a call arrives, the watch can offer the gesture as a way to answer. The hint on screen tells you whether it applies to that call.
Taking a photo
The Google Store’s Pixel Watch gesture overview describes a one-handed flow: a countdown starts to an automatic snap, and then a double pinch captures the photo. This is a practical way to take a picture without tapping the watch face.
Rank #3
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
Pausing workout music
During a workout with music playing, the gesture can pause playback. As with other uses, it appears only where the watch offers it.
When it does not respond
- No hint appears: The current screen may not support double pinch. Move to a screen or prompt where a hint is shown, such as an incoming call or a photo countdown.
- Your watch is not on the supported list: Double pinch is documented only for Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. Other watches will not show the feature.
- Your software is older than Wear OS 6.1: Update the watch software, then try again. Software version affects availability.
- The gesture seems inconsistent: Try a clear, two-tap motion with the thumb and index finger of the wearing hand. Google’s documentation does not publish reliability figures, so occasional misses should be expected.
- You are looking for screen magnification or touch accessibility features: These are separate from double pinch. Google’s accessibility overview describes touch-screen magnification and other screen gestures, which are not the hand gesture covered here.
Why the same action also has a button
Android Developers’ Wear OS design guidance states: “If a user can perform an action with a double pinch, a visible, tappable button that performs the same task must be present.” In practice, this means an app that supports double pinch for a task should also show a tappable control for it. The gesture is a hands-free shortcut, not the only way to complete the action. The guidance also notes that Pixel Watch includes an on-watch interactive tutorial and a hints framework within the Gesture API, which is where the on-screen cues come from.
