How to use Docker with Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) depends on what you want inside the container: only the application, the complete development toolchain, or several Compose services. Docker supplies the isolated runtime; VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA, Rider, and other compatible IDEs provide editing, terminals, lifecycle controls, and debugging.
The three choices are not interchangeable. You can keep the IDE on your computer and run the application in Docker, open the whole project inside a Dev Container, or use Docker Compose to coordinate an application with databases, caches, queues, and workers.
Key takeaways
- Docker provides the runtime, libraries, services, and tools that an IDE connects to; Docker does not replace the IDE.
- Host IDE plus a containerized application is usually the simplest workflow, while a Dev Container gives the team a version-controlled development toolchain.
- Docker Compose can describe one application or a multi-service stack, including ports, environment variables, networks, and persistent volumes.
- Container debugging requires a language-specific adapter, debug flags, source-path mapping, and an attach or launch configuration.
docker compose down -vremoves named volumes and can delete local development database data.
What does using Docker with an IDE mean?
Using Docker with an IDE can mean several different things. Docker integration lets an IDE build images, start containers, inspect logs, manage Compose applications, and connect to registries. A containerized application runs the application process in Docker while the editor and development tools remain on the host. A Dev Container puts the project’s development toolchain inside Docker and connects the IDE to that environment.
| Workflow | What runs in Docker? | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDE on host, application in Docker | Application and optionally databases or caches | Existing projects and simple local development | Host tools and container tools must work across a boundary |
| IDE attached to a Dev Container | Project toolchain and often the application | Reproducible team environments and conflicting dependencies | More setup, file-system, credential, and permission complexity |
| IDE managing Docker Compose | Several coordinated services | Full-stack and microservice applications | Service networking, persistence, and debugging require configuration |
Remote development is a separate arrangement: the local IDE interface may connect to a remote machine that hosts the source code, IDE backend, Docker daemon, and containers. A remote Docker daemon can also run containers while the IDE remains local.

What do you need before connecting Docker to an IDE?
You need a working Docker daemon, an IDE, and a project configuration. The project may contain a Dockerfile, compose.yaml or docker-compose.yml, .devcontainer/devcontainer.json, or an IDE-generated container configuration.
On macOS and Windows, Docker Desktop bundles Docker Engine, the Docker CLI, Docker Compose, image and container management, and a graphical interface. Windows Docker Desktop can use WSL 2 and can switch between Linux and Windows containers. Linux users can instead install Docker Engine directly.
VS Code users typically install VS Code, Docker, and the Dev Containers extension. Container Tools can add additional Docker and Compose controls. IntelliJ IDEA, Rider, and other JetBrains IDEs provide Docker support, but exact features can depend on the IDE, edition, subscription, language plugin, and version.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify Docker before troubleshooting the IDE:
docker --version
docker compose version
docker run --rm hello-world
docker info
The first three commands confirm that the CLI, Compose, and daemon are available. docker info is useful when the CLI exists but the IDE reports that it cannot connect to Docker.
On Linux, a user may need permission to communicate with the Docker daemon. VS Code documents this example:
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
Sign out and back in after changing group membership. Treat Docker-group membership as sensitive: access to the Docker daemon can provide root-equivalent control over the host, so do not grant it casually.
How do you run an application in Docker while keeping the IDE on the host?
The host-IDE workflow keeps source code and the editor on the host, then runs the application and optional supporting services in containers. This arrangement has the lowest conceptual overhead and often gives the fastest native editing and debugging experience.
For example, this development Dockerfile builds a Node.js application:
FROM node:22-bookworm
WORKDIR /workspace
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci
COPY . .
EXPOSE 3000
CMD ["npm", "run", "dev", "--", "--host", ""0.0.0.0""]
Build and run the image with a bind mount for source code:
docker build -t my-app-dev .
docker run --rm -it
-p 3000:3000
-v "$PWD:/workspace"
-v /workspace/node_modules
my-app-dev
The -p 3000:3000 option maps host port 3000 to container port 3000. The application must listen on 0.0.0.0 inside the container; listening only on localhost or 127.0.0.1 can make the application unreachable from the host.
The source bind mount makes host edits visible in the container. The separate anonymous /workspace/node_modules volume prevents host-installed dependencies from replacing the Linux dependency tree created in the container. Python virtual environments, Java build directories, PHP vendor directories, and other ecosystems need equivalent dependency-isolation strategies.

Live reload is not guaranteed by a bind mount. The framework’s watcher must detect changes delivered through the host-container file system. macOS and Windows can experience slower mounted-file access than Linux, and some frameworks need polling enabled.
When should you use Docker Compose with an IDE?
Use Docker Compose when the application depends on PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Kafka, a worker, a scheduler, a separate frontend, or another cooperating service. Compose can also describe one application’s ports, mounts, and environment instead of being limited to microservices.
This example defines an application, PostgreSQL database, and Redis cache:
services:
app:
build:
context: .
target: development
working_dir: /workspace
command: npm run dev -- --host 0.0.0.0
ports:
- "3000:3000"
volumes:
- .:/workspace
- node_modules:/workspace/node_modules
environment:
DATABASE_URL: postgres://app:app@db:5432/app
REDIS_URL: redis://redis:6379
depends_on:
- db
- redis
db:
image: postgres:17
environment:
POSTGRES_USER: app
POSTGRES_PASSWORD: app
POSTGRES_DB: app
volumes:
- postgres_data:/var/lib/postgresql/data
redis:
image: redis:7
volumes:
node_modules:
postgres_data:
Inside the Compose network, the application reaches PostgreSQL at hostname db and Redis at hostname redis. The host reaches the application through published port 3000. Keep credentials such as the example database password in development-only configuration; do not treat example values as production secrets.

How do you use VS Code Dev Containers?
VS Code Dev Containers opens the project inside a container so IntelliSense, navigation, terminals, extensions, tests, and debugging use the containerized toolchain. The configuration commonly lives at .devcontainer/devcontainer.json.
- Install Docker, VS Code, and the Dev Containers extension.
- Open the project folder in VS Code.
- Open the Command Palette and run Dev Containers: Open Folder in Container….
- Choose a template, existing Dockerfile, or Compose file.
- Let VS Code build the container and reconnect to it.
- Run the terminal, tests, package manager, and debugger inside the container.
The workflow and command are documented in VS Code’s Dev Containers documentation.

Should you use a Dockerfile or a prebuilt Dev Container image?
Use a project Dockerfile when the team needs a pinned operating-system version, system packages, native libraries, database clients, or a runtime version unavailable in a standard image. A project Dockerfile also makes it easier to align local development with a CI build.
Use a prebuilt development image when the project needs ordinary tooling and quick onboarding matters more than extensive customization. A prebuilt image also means accepting the image maintainer’s update cadence.

The open Dev Container specification provides the broader configuration model used by compatible tools, but compatibility and feature availability still vary between IDEs.
How do you manage Compose from VS Code?
VS Code can start Compose services through its container commands, show service logs, and work with the project’s existing Compose configuration. The underlying Compose file remains the source of truth.
For debugging a Compose application, start the services with the documented Containers: Compose Up workflow, then use a language-specific attach configuration. A normal local launch.json configuration does not automatically debug a process started through Docker Compose. The VS Code Compose documentation describes the Compose and attach workflow.
How do IntelliJ IDEA and Rider work with Docker?
IntelliJ IDEA and Rider provide IDE controls for Docker images, containers, Compose applications, logs, registries, and related services. In IntelliJ IDEA, open View → Tool Windows → Services, or press Alt+8, to inspect configured Docker connections and services.
- Open Settings → Plugins if Docker support is unavailable.
- Configure a local or remote Docker connection.
- Open View → Tool Windows → Services.
- Pull images, run containers, inspect logs, and manage Compose services from the Docker connection.
JetBrains documents the Docker integration in its IntelliJ IDEA Docker documentation. The Docker plugin is bundled and enabled by default in the documented IntelliJ IDEA configuration, but availability can depend on the specific IDE edition and subscription.
JetBrains also supports Docker-based development containers. The JetBrains Dev Container documentation describes editing, building, and running projects in development containers, including Compose-based configurations with multiple container connections. Do not assume that IntelliJ IDEA, Rider, every other JetBrains IDE, and every edition provide identical Dev Container or debugging features.
For the JetBrains documented remote Docker-server scenario, a local Docker CLI and Docker Buildx are required, and JetBrains specifies Docker Engine 19.03 or later for Buildx support. Remote development can instead place the IDE backend and containers on another machine; JetBrains describes supported approaches in its remote development overview.
How do you debug an application inside a container?
Container debugging is not automatic. The application needs a language-specific debug adapter, the correct debug flags, a reachable debug port, correct source-path mapping, and an IDE launch or attach configuration.
| Debugging concern | What must be configured |
|---|---|
| Network reachability | Publish or forward the debugger port and listen on the appropriate interface |
| Language adapter | Install the debugger used by Node.js, Python, .NET, or the JVM |
| Source mapping | Map host paths to the application’s container paths, including source maps where applicable |
| Process startup | Start the application with the required debug flag or attach mode |
| Compose services | Attach to the correct service rather than assuming the local launch profile applies |
In a VS Code Dev Container, create or select .vscode/launch.json and start debugging with F5. VS Code can start the application on the container host and attach the debugger, but the exact configuration differs for Node.js, Python, .NET, and JVM applications. Use normal host debugging by default when it meets the need; use container debugging when the container environment itself must be tested, because the extra boundary can make debugging slower or more complex.
When breakpoints are hollow or ignored, check source-map paths, container and host working directories, debugger ports, startup flags, the selected service, and whether compiled or optimized code differs from the source.

How do source mounts, file systems, and permissions affect IDE development?
Source mounts are one of the most important practical differences between Linux, macOS, Windows, WSL 2, and remote Docker hosts. A bind mount gives the container access to host files, but file-event delivery and I/O performance can vary considerably across those environments.
- Confirm that the intended directory is mounted with
docker inspect. - Enable polling when the framework does not receive file-change events through the mount.
- On Windows, consider keeping source in WSL 2 rather than a Windows-mounted path when that better suits the project.
- Use Docker Desktop file-sharing or synchronized-file features where available and appropriate.
- Do not mount host dependency directories over dependencies installed for the container’s operating system.
Permission problems commonly happen when the container writes files as root. Generated files may become root-owned on the host, Git may report permission errors, and package managers may be unable to update files. Prefer a non-root development user, set remoteUser in a Dev Container, and match the container UID/GID to the host where practical. Avoid using chmod -R 777 as a general fix.
What are the main security and maintainability rules?
Docker improves consistency only for the environment that the project actually declares. Containers do not eliminate differences in host kernels, CPU architectures, file systems, networking, credentials, or external services.
- Run development tools as a non-root user whenever practical.
- Never copy private SSH keys into an image or commit keys to a repository.
- Use a credential manager or carefully forward an SSH agent for Git access inside a container.
- Do not expose the Docker socket or use privileged containers without understanding the host-security consequences.
- Pin important base images and dependency versions, and review untrusted images before using them.
- Separate development and production images. Development images may contain compilers, debuggers, shells, package managers, hot-reload tools, and source mounts; production images should generally be smaller, immutable, non-root, and free of development-only tooling.
- Keep terminal commands documented even when the IDE offers one-click actions.
VS Code specifically treats Git credential managers and optional SSH-key sharing as separate Dev Container setup concerns in its container documentation.

A mount such as .:/workspace can hide files created during image construction. Add a separate dependency volume, for example node_modules:/workspace/node_modules, or use the equivalent cache and dependency-directory strategy for the project’s language.

The image works on one computer but not another
Check CPU architecture. Apple Silicon and other ARM machines may differ from x86 CI runners or production servers. Prefer native images; multi-platform images may use emulation, which can be slower, and native dependencies can fail even when application code is portable.
Which Docker-plus-IDE workflow should you choose?
Choose the workflow that removes a real source of friction rather than adding containers by default.
| Choose this | When it makes sense | What you gain | What you accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host IDE plus containerized app | Simple runtime, existing host tools, or only databases and caches need isolation | Low overhead, native IDE performance, simpler incremental debugging | Host dependency drift and cross-boundary debugging |
| Dev Container | Conflicting dependencies, frequent onboarding, or a need for a shared toolchain across operating systems | Version-controlled tools, cleaner hosts, repeatable setup | Build time, mount performance, permissions, credentials, and port-forwarding work |
| Compose-managed stack | Application depends on databases, queues, caches, workers, or multiple frontends and APIs | Repeatable service topology and environment configuration | Networking, service readiness, volumes, and logs must be understood |
| Remote Docker or remote development | Local hardware is insufficient or source and tools must stay on a secured machine | Remote compute and a target-like Linux environment | Latency, credentials, source placement, and remote administration |
Docker may be unnecessary when a project has one stable dependency, native tooling is faster, the application requires host GUI or hardware integration, or the team cannot support container troubleshooting. Containerization is valuable when it solves dependency drift, onboarding, service orchestration, or environment parity—not merely because an IDE has a Docker button.
What are the alternatives to Docker Desktop?
Linux developers can use Docker Engine without Docker Desktop for a lighter command-line-oriented setup. A remote Docker host can move builds and containers to a server or virtual machine. Podman is a daemonless or rootless alternative, although Docker-oriented IDE extensions may not officially support every compatible runtime; VS Code says alternative Docker-compliant CLIs may work but are not officially supported in its Dev Containers workflow.
Hosted development environments such as GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod, and JetBrains remote-development options reduce local setup but introduce recurring costs, network dependence, vendor lock-in, and possible restrictions on Docker-in-Docker or privileged workloads. These services are alternatives to local Docker development, not universal replacements for every Docker workflow.
How much do Docker Desktop and related tools cost?
Docker’s official pricing page showed the Personal plan at $0, Pro at $11 per user per month with monthly billing or $9 per user per month with annual billing, Team at $16 per user per month with monthly billing or $15 per user per month with annual billing, and Business at $24 per user per month with annual pricing shown. These prices were observed August 16–18, 2026; pricing, plan entitlements, and commercial-use terms should be checked again at publication.
| Product or plan | Observed positioning | When it may be justified |
|---|---|---|
| Docker Desktop Personal | $0 | Individual developers who meet the plan’s usage terms |
| Docker Desktop Pro | $11 monthly or $9 annually per user | Individual professional workflows needing listed paid features |
| Docker Desktop Team | $16 monthly or $15 annually per user | Teams needing collaboration and administration features |
| Docker Desktop Business | $24 annually per user as shown | Organizations needing enterprise controls such as RBAC, audit logs, SSO, or SCIM |
| Docker Engine or Podman | Alternative runtime choices | Linux, remote-host, daemonless, or lower-desktop-overhead workflows |
Docker lists features such as synchronized file shares, Docker Build Cloud, Testcontainers Cloud, unlimited Docker Hub pull rates, role-based access control, audit logs, SSO, SCIM, and enhanced container isolation on higher plans. Buy a paid Docker plan only when a listed feature, governance requirement, support need, build-time problem, or test-resource problem justifies it. An IDE user does not automatically need Docker Pro or Team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Docker with an IDE without Docker Desktop?
Yes. Linux users can install Docker Engine directly, and developers can use a remote Docker host or evaluate Podman. Docker Desktop is convenient on macOS and Windows, but it is not a universal requirement.
What is the difference between Docker integration and a Dev Container?
Docker integration gives the IDE controls for images, containers, Compose services, logs, and registries. A Dev Container places the project’s development tools and often the application inside a container, then connects the IDE to that environment.
Why does my application work in a Docker container but remain unreachable?
The application commonly listens only on 127.0.0.1 inside the container, or the container port is not published or forwarded. Configure the development server to listen on 0.0.0.0 and verify the mapping with docker compose port app 3000.
Does docker compose down delete my database?
docker compose down normally removes containers and networks while preserving named volumes. docker compose down -v also removes named volumes, so the command can delete local development database data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Docker works best with an IDE when the container solves a specific problem: inconsistent runtimes, difficult onboarding, supporting services, or a need to test the real container environment. Start with the host-IDE workflow for a simple application, use Compose for coordinated services, and adopt a Dev Container when the entire development toolchain needs to be reproducible.
