You can save and restore cookies in Puppeteer to preserve test state, but importing cookies is not a guaranteed way to bypass X (formerly Twitter) login. X’s current automation rules prohibit scripting the website outside approved API-based methods and warn that violations can lead to permanent suspension. Use the technique only with an account and application you own or are explicitly authorized to test; never use someone else’s session cookies.

What cookie persistence can—and cannot—do

Cookies are browser storage values that a server may use to recognize a returning session. Puppeteer can read, create, and delete cookies at the browser or browser-context level. Saving those values and restoring them in a later test run can prevent repeated login steps in an application you control.

That capability is different from a supported “skip Twitter login” recipe. X documents that cookies help keep users logged in, authenticate access, and protect accounts, but it does not publish a stable cookie bundle that guarantees an authenticated consumer-site session. A session can also depend on server-side state, device signals, expiration, consent state, or additional checks. Therefore, a restored cookie file may be rejected, require a fresh login, or trigger a security challenge.

X’s Automation rules, updated April 2026, specifically say: “Use non-API-based forms of automation, such as scripting the >x< website.” The same page warns that this can result in permanent suspension. X’s Rules also prohibit using cookies, credentials, tokens, or keys to access an account other than your own unless access is directly authorized through an approved mechanism such as Teams or OAuth. The examples below are consequently written for a local or user-owned test application, not for bypassing X controls.

Use the current Puppeteer cookie API

Puppeteer’s CookieData reference is currently labeled version 25.12.0 (the version displayed in 2026). Cookie records can include name, value, domain, path, expires, httpOnly, secure, and sameSite. Accepted details and method signatures can change, so check the API reference that matches the Puppeteer version installed in your project.

Older tutorials commonly call page.setCookie() and related page-level methods. Page-level cookie methods are deprecated in favor of browser- or BrowserContext-level methods. Using the newer methods also makes the storage scope explicit.

Install and launch Puppeteer

npm install puppeteer
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();

await page.goto('http://localhost:3000', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
console.log(await page.title());

await browser.close();

Replace the local URL with a test site you own. Do not point this workflow at X’s consumer website unless you have a specific, permitted integration and are following the applicable API and policy requirements.

Save cookies after an authorized test login

The safest pattern is to log in normally to your test application, verify that the application reports an authenticated state, then export cookies from the same BrowserContext. Keep the file private because it may grant access until the session expires or is revoked.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
import {writeFile, chmod} from 'node:fs/promises';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();

await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/login', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
await page.locator('input[name="email"]').fill('test-user@example.test');
await page.locator('input[name="password"]').fill(process.env.TEST_PASSWORD);
await Promise.all([
  page.locator('button[type="submit"]').click(),
  page.waitForNavigation({waitUntil: 'networkidle2'})
]);

await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/account', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
if (!(await page.locator('[data-authenticated="true"]').count())) {
  throw new Error('The test login did not produce an authenticated page');
}

const cookies = await browser.cookies();
await writeFile('.test-cookies.json', JSON.stringify(cookies, null, 2), {mode: 0o600});
// chmod is useful when the file already existed with weaker permissions.
await chmod('.test-cookies.json', 0o600);
await browser.close();

Use environment variables or a test-secret manager for passwords. Do not commit the cookie file to source control, print cookie values in CI logs, or upload it to a ticket or chat system.

Restore cookies in a later run

Launch a context, set the previously saved records with the browser-level API, navigate to the site’s origin, and verify authentication by observing your application’s own account marker. Set cookies before loading protected pages.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
import {readFile} from 'node:fs/promises';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();

const cookies = JSON.parse(await readFile('.test-cookies.json', 'utf8'));
await browser.setCookie(...cookies);
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/account', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});

const signedIn = await page.locator('[data-authenticated="true"]').count();
if (!signedIn) {
  console.warn('Saved cookies were not accepted; run the authorized login flow again.');
}

await browser.close();

Cookie domains and paths must match the URL you visit. A cookie marked secure is intended for HTTPS, and an expired record will not restore a session. Do not “fix” a rejected cookie by changing its domain, security flags, or value unless your test application’s documentation explicitly requires that change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate accounts with BrowserContext

Each BrowserContext has isolated cookies and local storage. This makes contexts useful for parallel tests or separate test accounts without launching a separate browser process for every account.

await bob.close();
await browser.close();

The default browser context is convenient for a single stateful flow. A newly created context starts with separate storage, so it is preferable when tests must not leak cookies or local-storage data between accounts. Context isolation does not make scripting a restricted website permissible; X’s policy applies regardless of which context you choose.

Cookie fields and lifecycle details

  • name and value: The application-defined pair. Treat values as secrets when they identify a session.
  • domain and path: Define where the browser sends the cookie. A mismatch can make an apparently valid record invisible to the application.
  • expires: A timestamp after which the browser discards the cookie. Session cookies may have no persistent expiration.
  • httpOnly: Prevents page JavaScript from reading the cookie, while still allowing HTTP requests to carry it.
  • secure: Restricts transmission to secure connections. Test over HTTPS when your application sets this flag.
  • sameSite: Controls cross-site sending behavior and can affect redirects or embedded login flows.

Do not assume that copying every cookie from one environment is correct. Development, staging, and production commonly use different domains, signing keys, and session stores. Generate state in the same environment where it will be consumed.

When restoration fails: symptoms and fixes

The page redirects to login

Check that you set cookies before navigation, that the domain and path match, and that none are expired. Confirm the test server is using the same session database and signing key as the login run. If the application intentionally rotates sessions, perform a fresh authorized login instead of modifying the cookie.

Only some requests are authenticated

Inspect whether the application also uses local storage, a server-side session, CSRF state, or an authorization header. Puppeteer cookie APIs only manage cookies; they do not export unrelated browser storage or server records.

browser.setCookie rejects the data

Validate the JSON shape against the CookieData reference for your installed Puppeteer version. Remove fields your version does not accept, provide a valid URL or domain relationship, and ensure expiration values use the documented format. Avoid copying snippets written for an older release.

Tests interfere with one another

Create one BrowserContext per account or scenario, close contexts in teardown, and do not reuse a shared cookie file concurrently. Give each parallel worker its own state directory or in-memory cookie set.

CI cannot read the cookie file

Store test state as a protected CI secret or regenerate it during setup. Verify file permissions and the working directory. Never solve this by making the file world-readable or checking it into the repository.

Testing strategy and reliability

Cookie reuse can shorten a test suite, but it introduces state that expires or becomes invalid. Keep a deterministic fallback login for your authorized test application, verify the authenticated marker at the start of each run, and regenerate state when verification fails. Run a clean-context test periodically so that stale cookies do not hide broken login behavior.

For parallel work, contexts are lighter than separate browser processes while still isolating storage. Close pages and contexts even when assertions fail. Set navigation and test timeouts appropriate to your application, and record status and error messages without recording cookie values.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a page image or PDF—not to maintain an authenticated X session—ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the result identified by response headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I copy a cookie JSON file between browsers?

Only when the cookie domain, security attributes, and application session store are compatible. Treat the file as secret state and verify the resulting session in an authorized test environment.

Does a BrowserContext persist after the browser closes?

A context isolates storage while it exists. To reuse state after shutdown, explicitly export and later restore the relevant cookies, or use a supported persistent profile for your test application.

Is cookie injection an approved way to automate X?

No. X’s current automation rules prohibit scripting its website outside approved methods, and its account rules restrict use of another person’s cookies or credentials. Use the official API and authorization mechanisms for supported integrations.
