Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet app makes it straightforward to enable encrypted DNS or route more of your Android device’s traffic through Cloudflare. Those are different options, and neither is a universal fix for slow or unreliable internet. For DNS encryption alone, Android 9 and later also offer a built-in Private DNS setting.
What Cloudflare’s Android app does
The 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet app offers two modes. DNS-only mode encrypts DNS lookups—the requests that translate website names into network addresses. WARP mode sends more of the device’s traffic through an encrypted connection to Cloudflare. Cloudflare documents WARP as the app’s default mode. The app is available through Google Play.
Cloudflare’s Android setup guide describes the app as a way to configure the phone to use 1.1.1.1 across networks. The one-tap setup can be convenient, but the app does not repair every cause of a connection problem, such as a weak Wi-Fi signal or an outage from your internet provider.

Choose DNS-only or WARP
| Option | What it covers | When to choose it | Important tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNS-only | DNS queries go to Cloudflare’s resolver over encrypted HTTPS (DoH) or TLS (DoT), depending on the selected mode. Other device traffic is not tunneled. | You want encrypted DNS without routing the rest of your traffic through WARP. | It protects DNS requests, not all internet activity. |
| WARP | Encrypts and sends device traffic to Cloudflare’s network. | You want a broader traffic tunnel than DNS encryption alone. | It can affect throughput and location-dependent services; it does not provide a selectable country or city. |
Cloudflare’s WARP modes documentation explains the distinction. WARP is not a general-purpose location-switching VPN: websites see a Cloudflare IP associated with your approximate location, not an address in a location you choose.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Set up the app
- Install 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet from Google Play.
- Open the app and accept its terms.
- Choose the mode you want. If you leave the default in place, the app uses WARP.
- Switch the app’s toggle to Connected.
- When Android asks, approve installation of the VPN profile. WARP needs this profile to route traffic through its tunnel.
For DNS encryption only, select DNS-only mode in the app rather than assuming the WARP default is equivalent. Cloudflare’s setup instructions cover the Android app workflow.
Use Android Private DNS instead
On Android 9 and later, Private DNS can encrypt DNS without installing Cloudflare’s app or creating a full-device traffic tunnel. The exact menu names vary by phone manufacturer and Android version; look in Settings for Private DNS. Select the option to provide a private DNS provider hostname and enter Cloudflare’s documented hostname for the ordinary resolver: one.one.one.one.

Cloudflare also documents optional 1.1.1.1 for Families hostnames. security.cloudflare-dns.com is intended to block malware; family.cloudflare-dns.com is intended to block malware and adult content. These are DNS filtering choices, not full-device content controls, and their stated scope is limited to those categories.

Know the limits before relying on WARP
- Speed can change. Encryption and routing can trade some throughput for privacy, and Cloudflare says some users may notice a speed drop. WARP is not a guaranteed speed upgrade.
- Location-sensitive apps may misbehave. Cloudflare warns that streaming, music, radio, or game services that depend on location may not work properly while WARP is active.
- WebRTC can bypass the tunnel. Cloudflare says WARP does not proxy WebRTC traffic. A video-call or game app using WebRTC may therefore expose your IP address rather than send that traffic through WARP. WARP should not be treated as full anonymity.
- Captive portals can interfere with manual DNS settings. Cloudflare warns that configuring static DNS IP addresses on older Android versions may prevent public Wi-Fi login pages from appearing or working.
For details on compatibility and behavior, see Cloudflare’s WARP FAQ.
Troubleshoot Wi-Fi sign-in and app problems
If a public Wi-Fi login page will not open
If you manually entered static DNS IP addresses on an older Android device, remove them or temporarily disable the app, then reconnect to the Wi-Fi network and complete its sign-in page. After login, restore your preferred setting if it works with that network. Cloudflare outlines this captive-portal issue in its Android guide.

If a location-based service stops working
Temporarily turn WARP off and check whether the service works without the tunnel. If it does, use the service without WARP when needed, or use DNS-only mode if encrypted DNS is sufficient for your purpose. DNS-only mode does not tunnel the service’s other traffic.
If your connection still fails
Disconnect the app or turn off the relevant mode while checking the underlying Wi-Fi or mobile connection. The app changes how DNS requests or traffic are routed; it cannot restore a broken local network, a failed captive-portal login, or an internet-provider outage.

Is WARP+ required?
No. The Google Play listing describes 1.1.1.1 with WARP as free and WARP+ as an optional paid feature. Cloudflare describes WARP+ Unlimited as a monthly subscription through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. Availability and subscription terms may vary by store and region, so check the listing shown on your device for current details. Nothing in these options guarantees that a particular connection problem will be resolved.
