Claude Code is most useful when you give it a project to understand, clear instructions to work from, and explicit boundaries for what it may do—not when you treat it only as a place to edit a single file. That workflow can help with codebase exploration, multi-file changes, commands, and Git tasks. It does not guarantee faster work or correct code, so review its changes and run your project’s checks.

What changes when Claude Code works in project context?

An editor-centered task often starts with a file already open and a narrowly defined change. A project-level task starts with the repository: ask Claude Code to trace how a behavior is implemented, identify the files involved, or explain an unfamiliar subsystem before asking for a change.

Anthropic documents Claude Code as able to explore a codebase, edit files, run commands, and assist with Git work. It also documents IDE and desktop interfaces, so this is not a choice between Claude Code and an editor. The distinction is whether the task benefits from understanding and acting across the project rather than changing one isolated snippet.

Start with investigation, then define the change

For an unfamiliar area, ask for an explanation or a map of the relevant files first. Then state the intended outcome and constraints. Separating discovery from implementation makes it easier to catch a mistaken assumption before it affects several files.

  • For a question, ask where a behavior is implemented and how the relevant code paths connect.
  • For a change, describe the outcome, the scope, and any constraints such as compatibility or files that should not be touched.
  • For a bug, provide the observed behavior and the expected behavior, then ask it to identify likely causes before editing.

Give the repository durable context with CLAUDE.md

A project-level CLAUDE.md can record shared context Claude should have when working in that repository: architecture notes, conventions, and the commands the project uses. For example, specify the actual test command and where API handlers live rather than writing a vague instruction such as “test carefully.”

Anthropic describes CLAUDE.md as context, not enforced configuration. Its memory guide recommends concrete, checkable instructions and advises targeting fewer than 200 lines per file. That is vendor guidance, not a measured threshold at which model performance changes.

Keep instructions specific and scoped

  • Write directions that can be checked, such as “run npm test” if that is the project’s real test command.
  • Keep the main file focused on information useful across the repository.
  • Move instructions that apply only to particular paths into path-scoped rules, rather than making every task carry irrelevant detail.

Do not rely on a sentence in CLAUDE.md to block an action. Instructions can influence how Claude behaves, but tool permissions are the separate mechanism that controls whether an action prompts, is allowed, or is denied.

Set permission boundaries separately from instructions

Permission rules govern tool actions. Depending on the applicable configuration, an action can require approval, be allowed, or be denied. Anthropic states that deny rules take precedence over ask and allow rules, and that the permission system—not the model’s interpretation of prose—enforces tool access.

Use the permission settings that fit the task: keep consequential or unfamiliar actions behind a review prompt, allow only narrowly scoped recurring actions where appropriate, and deny actions the workflow should not use. Check the permissions that actually apply in your environment; do not assume a project instruction grants or restricts access.

Choose the CLI mode that fits the task

Interactive sessions are suited to exploration and iterative work: ask a question, inspect the response, refine the request, and review proposed changes. The CLI also supports noninteractive calls with -p, piped input, and continuing or resuming sessions. Those options can help with repeatable command-line tasks, but they are not required for ordinary interactive use.

Choose a noninteractive call when the task and expected output are clear enough to run without a back-and-forth. For open-ended investigation or changes that need judgment, an interactive session makes it easier to clarify scope as you go.

Review the result instead of assuming it is correct

Claude Code can make edits and run commands, but that capability is not evidence that a particular change is correct or fully verified. Inspect the diff, check that the change stayed within scope, and run the project’s own tests or other relevant checks. If a check fails, use the failure output to investigate rather than treating a completed command as proof of success.

  • Read the changed files and look for unrelated edits.
  • Confirm that the implementation matches the requested behavior and project conventions.
  • Run the relevant checks yourself or verify their actual output.
  • Review any Git operation before accepting or sharing the resulting work.

Access and setup depend on your account

Anthropic’s setup documentation describes access through eligible Claude paid plans or a Console account, as well as enterprise provider options. Eligibility and billing can vary, so check Anthropic’s current setup and account information before relying on a particular access path. No price is established here.
