ChatGPT’s virtual try-on can generate a preview of how clothing or an accessory might look on you, using a selfie and a product image. It does not measure your body or predict which size will fit. Check the retailer’s garment measurements, product details and return policy before buying.
What ChatGPT virtual try-on does
OpenAI announced virtual try-on for clothing and accessories in its October 1, 2026 release notes. On an eligible product listing in ChatGPT shopping, the feature uses ChatGPT Images to create a visual preview from your photo and the item. OpenAI describes the goal as helping you “see how the item could look on you.” The feature is available on mobile and web, but not every listing has a Try on button.
You can also upload a picture of clothing or an accessory in a ChatGPT conversation and ask to see how it could look on you. In either case, the result is an AI-generated image—not a physical fitting, body measurement or garment measurement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How to try on an item in ChatGPT
- Open a clothing or accessory product listing that has a Try on button.
- Select Try on, then take or upload a selfie.
- View the generated try-on image.
For an item without a Try on button, upload its picture in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. This alternative generates a visual preview too; it does not establish fit or size.

What the preview can—and cannot—tell you
OpenAI cautions: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” The image can help you imagine an item’s appearance, but it cannot confirm how the garment will sit, feel or fit on your body. No named statistic in the reviewed OpenAI materials measures this feature’s accuracy, effect on purchases or improvement in fit.
Before ordering, verify the retailer’s garment measurements and full product details, then check its return policy. Treat the generated image as a visual aid, not a substitute for those checks.

Reference-photo controls
OpenAI says reference photos are saved for future try-ons. To replace or delete one, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. Those controls explain how to manage the reference photo; they do not, on their own, answer every question about broader data retention or privacy.
