On the PC version of GTA V, you can keep a keyboard and mouse connected while using a compatible game controller; you do not have to choose one input device for the whole game. Rockstar identifies XInput controllers, including an Xbox 360 controller, as supported, and says most PC controls can be rebound. Driving and flying default to keyboard controls, but you can use a controller for those activities if you prefer.
Set up a controller alongside your keyboard
- Connect a PC-compatible controller. Rockstar’s PC controls guidance identifies XInput controllers and gives an Xbox 360 controller as an example. It does not guarantee that every controller or connection method will work with every current launcher or setup. See Rockstar’s PC controls guidance.
- Launch GTA V and test both devices in play. Use the keyboard and mouse for the actions that feel more convenient, and the controller for analog sticks or triggers if those suit you better. Rockstar lists keyboard controls as the default for driving and flying; that is a default, not a requirement to use the keyboard for those activities.
- Rebind controls if needed. Rockstar says most PC controls can be rebound. Check the game’s control settings when a binding is uncomfortable or conflicts with how you use the other device.
If GTA V does not detect the controller
Check the controller configuration for the platform you use to launch the game. Steam’s general support explains that a controller may be usable in a game even if parts of its setup or interface are designed for mouse and keyboard. Steam Input also provides mapping options for gamepad, keyboard, and mouse events. These are platform-level tools, not a guarantee that every GTA V launcher, controller, or combination will behave identically.
If you use Steam, review its controller troubleshooting guidance and Steam Input documentation. The available settings and results can depend on your game and configuration.

What to expect from on-screen button prompts
Players have reported that prompts can change when they switch between input devices, but that observation is anecdotal; Rockstar’s cited PC controls guidance does not promise specific prompt-switching behavior across versions. Test the behavior in your installed game rather than relying on a particular label change. A Steam Community discussion describes player observations, not an official compatibility guarantee.

This guidance is for GTA V on PC. Rockstar’s cited article concerns PC controls and should not be taken as instructions for setting up keyboard-and-controller input on console versions.
