Set a recurring bedtime and wake-up alarm in the Health app, not by entering a bedtime in Sleep Focus. Use Clock when you want to adjust the next scheduled wake-up without changing the recurring plan. These features work together, but a regular Clock alarm is separate and does not turn on Sleep Focus.
The important choice is whether you are changing a plan or only the next occurrence. Health is where you create recurring schedules, assign them to days, and manage wind-down and alarm options. Clock provides a convenient adjustment for the next scheduled wake-up and lets you decide whether that change is temporary or recurring.
How to set a recurring bedtime on your iPhone
Create the recurring plan in Health. A bedtime and wake-up time entered while setting up Sleep Focus are a one-time schedule; to repeat them on selected days, use the Sleep schedule setup.
- Open Health, then tap Browse > Sleep > Sleep. If your iOS version shows a different route, use Health’s search to find Sleep.
- Tap Get Started, then Continue.
- Set a Sleep Goal if you want one. It is optional for setting up the schedule.
- Under Schedule, tap Edit. Select the days the schedule should apply to, then set bedtime and wake-up time. The selected days are the active days.
- Choose whether the schedule alarm is on. Set its available sound, volume, vibration, and snooze options.
- Tap Done, then Next, then Done to finish.
To change bedtime and wake-up independently, drag the bedtime or alarm control. Dragging the arc between them moves both times together, preserving the scheduled sleep duration.

What to decide before saving
First decide which days belong to this pattern. The schedule applies only to the days shown as selected, so a workday plan and a weekend plan should not be forced into one schedule if their times differ. Next decide whether the alarm should be enabled. You can save a schedule with its alarm off and turn it on later, or leave it on while adjusting sound, volume, vibration, and snooze.
The circular schedule control represents the relationship between bedtime and wake-up. Dragging one control changes that time. Dragging the arc moves both together, which is useful when you want the same amount of planned sleep but need to move the whole window earlier or later. Check both displayed times before tapping Done, especially after dragging the arc.
Why the Sleep Focus setup can be confusing
During Sleep Focus setup, iPhone can ask for a bedtime and wake-up time. Apple treats that as a one-time schedule. It will not create the repeating weekday or weekend plan many people expect. If the times need to recur, leave Sleep Focus customization and complete the recurring setup under Health > Browse > Sleep > Sleep.

Sleep Focus and the sleep schedule are related but not interchangeable. The schedule supplies the recurring days, bedtime, wake-up time, and schedule alarm. Sleep Focus controls the distraction-reduction period around bedtime. You can use one without changing the other.
How to set different schedules for weekdays and weekends
Use separate schedules when your days have different sleep and wake-up times—for example, one schedule for workdays and another for the weekend. Health supports multiple schedules, each with its own selected days, bedtime, wake-up time, and alarm options.
- Open Health > Browse > Sleep > Sleep.
- Scroll to Your Schedule, then tap Full Schedule & Options.
- Tap Add Schedule for a new pattern, or Edit beside an existing one.
- Select the days for that schedule and set its bedtime, wake-up time, and alarm options.
- Save the changes.
A saved edit applies to every selected day in that schedule. Check the selected days before saving if you intend to change only a weekday or weekend pattern.
For example, a weekday schedule can include Monday through Friday, while a second schedule includes Saturday and Sunday. The schedules remain separate, so changing the weekend bedtime does not alter the weekday times. If a day is accidentally selected in both patterns, review the active-day selections and remove it from the pattern that should not control that day.
There is no need to create a separate schedule for every individual day unless each day truly needs a different plan. Group days that share the same bedtime, wake-up time, and alarm behavior. Use Add Schedule when a new day pattern is needed, rather than changing an existing schedule and unintentionally applying that change to all of its selected days.
How to edit an existing recurring schedule
Open Health > Browse > Sleep > Sleep, scroll to Your Schedule, and tap Full Schedule & Options. Choose Edit for the schedule you want to change. You can review or change its active days, bedtime, wake-up time, and alarm options, then save.

Remember the scope of an edit: when you tap Done, the change applies to every day included in that schedule. If only one day needs a different time, create or use a separate schedule for that day instead of editing a multi-day schedule. This is the most common way to avoid changing several mornings when you meant to change one.
Use the schedule editor for durable changes such as a new work shift, a permanent bedtime adjustment, or a different set of weekend days. Use Clock’s next-alarm control for an exception that should disappear after the next wake-up.
How to change only tomorrow’s wake-up alarm in Clock
Clock can make a one-time adjustment to the next scheduled wake-up. This is useful when you need a different wake-up time for the next occurrence but want the usual schedule to return afterward.
- Open Clock > Alarms, then tap Change for the sleep alarm.
- Drag the wake-up alarm control to set the next wake-up time. If you drag the arc between bedtime and wake-up instead, both times move together and the scheduled sleep duration is preserved.
- Adjust sound and haptics, volume, snooze, or snooze duration if needed, then tap Done.
- Choose Change Next Alarm Only to keep the adjustment to this occurrence.
The regular schedule resumes after that wake-up. If the Clock screen offers Change This Schedule and you choose it, the recurring wake-up alarm changes instead. For broader edits to the schedule—including its days or bedtime—use Health.
Next alarm only versus this schedule
These choices have different effects:
- Change Next Alarm Only: changes the upcoming wake-up and then lets the normal recurring schedule resume.
- Change This Schedule: saves the new recurring wake-up time for the schedule that you are viewing.
Choose the first option for a late night, an unusually early appointment, or another single exception. Choose the second when the new wake-up time should continue on the schedule’s selected days. If you are unsure, use Change Next Alarm Only; it limits the change to one occurrence.
Changing one time or moving the whole sleep window
Drag the wake-up control when only the morning alarm should move. Drag the bedtime control when only bedtime should move. Drag the arc between the controls when both should move together while preserving the scheduled sleep duration. After making a change, verify whether the displayed bedtime moved as well as the wake-up time before saving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow Sleep Focus and Wind Down relate to your schedule
Sleep Focus can reduce distractions such as notifications and calls around bedtime. In Health, open Sleep > Full Schedule & Options to adjust Wind Down and Sleep Goal under Additional Details. Wind Down can be set from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime. Sleep Focus begins when the configured Wind Down period starts.
Wind Down is therefore earlier than the bedtime shown in your schedule. If bedtime is 11:00 p.m. and Wind Down is configured for an hour, Sleep Focus begins at the start of that one-hour period rather than waiting until 11:00 p.m. The available setting ranges from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime, so choose the interval that matches how much quiet preparation time you want.
To customize Sleep Focus itself, open Settings > Focus > Sleep. Setting a bedtime and wake-up time during Sleep Focus setup does not create a repeating schedule; configure the schedule in Health if you want it to recur.

If notifications or calls are not being filtered when expected, check the Sleep Focus settings and the Wind Down timing separately from the alarm. A schedule alarm and Sleep Focus are different controls: changing the alarm sound does not define which distractions Sleep Focus filters, and changing Focus settings does not rewrite the recurring bedtime and wake-up times.
Sleep schedule alarms versus regular Clock alarms
A sleep schedule alarm belongs to a schedule managed in Health. A regular Clock alarm is a separate alarm, which can be one-time or repeat on chosen days. The choice depends on whether you want an alarm tied to your sleep plan or a standalone alarm.
| Feature | Sleep schedule alarm | Regular Clock alarm |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is managed | Health sleep schedule | Clock app |
| Repeats | On the selected days in its schedule | One time or on chosen days |
| Turns on Sleep Focus | Sleep Focus can begin at Wind Down, according to its configured timing | No |
| Sound options | Available sounds, volume, vibration, and snooze; a song cannot be selected | Can use a song |
Keep the distinction in mind if an alarm rings but Sleep Focus does not activate: a standalone Clock alarm does not enable Sleep Focus. Configure Sleep Focus and its Wind Down timing separately.
Use an ordinary Clock alarm when you need a separate reminder that is not part of the sleep plan. It can be set for one occurrence or repeated on chosen days, and it can use a song. Use the Health schedule when the alarm should follow selected sleep-schedule days and the bedtime/wake-up relationship.
Because both alarms can appear in the Clock area, identify which control you are editing before saving. The sleep alarm offers schedule-specific actions such as Change Next Alarm Only and Change This Schedule. A regular alarm does not change the Health sleep schedule and does not start Sleep Focus.

Choose the action that matches what you want to stop. Turning off an alarm does not necessarily remove the schedule that controls its timing.
- Skip the next scheduled alarm: In Health, edit the Next schedule and turn off Alarm. The normal alarm resumes after that wake-up.
- Keep a schedule but silence its alarm: Edit that schedule and turn off Alarm.
- Turn off all sleep schedules and their alarms: In Full Schedule & Options, switch off Sleep Schedule.
- Remove one schedule: Edit that schedule and choose Delete Schedule.
Use the first option for a single skipped alarm when the schedule should continue afterward. Use the second when the schedule remains useful for planning but should not sound. Turn off Sleep Schedule when every schedule and its alarms should be disabled. Delete a schedule only when you no longer want that day pattern available.
Turning off an alarm is not the same as deleting the schedule. If the schedule is still present, you can edit it later and turn the alarm back on. Deleting removes that particular schedule, while other schedules can remain in place.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Expecting Sleep Focus setup to repeat
A bedtime and wake-up entered during Sleep Focus setup are one-time values. For repetition, use the recurring schedule flow in Health and select the active days.

Changing a multi-day schedule for one exception
An edit applies to every day selected in that schedule. For one unusual morning, change the next alarm in Clock and select Change Next Alarm Only.
Moving both controls accidentally
Dragging the arc moves bedtime and wake-up together. Drag an individual control when only one time should change, and check the resulting times before tapping Done.
Assuming a Clock alarm starts Sleep Focus
Regular Clock alarms are independent and do not turn on Sleep Focus. Set Sleep Focus and Wind Down under their own settings if distraction filtering is required.
Looking for a song in the schedule alarm options
A sleep schedule alarm cannot use a song. If a song is essential, use a regular Clock alarm instead, understanding that it will not activate Sleep Focus.

Use this quick guide to avoid changing more than you mean to:
- For a repeating bedtime and wake-up, create or edit a schedule in Health.
- For a one-time change to the next wake-up, choose Change Next Alarm Only in Clock.
- For a recurring wake-up change, choose Change This Schedule in Clock, or edit the schedule in Health.
- To move bedtime and wake-up together, drag the arc between them; to change one time, drag its control.
- To stop an alarm but retain the schedule, turn off that schedule’s Alarm option. To stop every schedule and its alarms, turn off Sleep Schedule.
- For different weekday and weekend patterns, use Add Schedule and assign each schedule only its intended days.
- For distraction reduction before bed, adjust Wind Down and customize Sleep Focus separately.
No separate alarm clock or accessory is required. These are built-in iPhone features; an Apple Watch or sleep tracker is not needed to create or edit the schedule described here.

How do I change just tomorrow’s wake-up alarm?
Open Clock > Alarms, tap Change for the sleep alarm, adjust the wake-up control, tap Done, and choose Change Next Alarm Only. The regular schedule resumes after that wake-up.
Can I have different sleep schedules for weekdays and weekends?
Yes. In Health > Browse > Sleep > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, tap Add Schedule. Assign weekdays to one schedule and weekend days to another, then give each its own bedtime, wake-up time, and alarm options.
How do I stop my sleep alarm from repeating?
To skip only the next alarm, edit the Next schedule in Health and turn off Alarm. To keep a schedule but silence its alarm, edit that schedule and turn off Alarm. To disable every sleep schedule and its alarms, switch off Sleep Schedule in Full Schedule & Options.
What is the difference between Change Next Alarm Only and Change This Schedule?
Change Next Alarm Only changes one upcoming wake-up and then returns to the recurring plan. Change This Schedule saves the new wake-up time for the recurring schedule.
Can a sleep schedule alarm use a song?
No. Apple’s sleep schedule alarm offers available sounds, volume, vibration, and snooze options, but it cannot use a song. A regular Clock alarm can use a song.
Does a regular Clock alarm turn on Sleep Focus?
No. Ordinary Clock alarms are separate from sleep schedules and do not activate Sleep Focus. Sleep Focus begins according to its configured Wind Down timing.
How long can Wind Down be?
Wind Down can be set from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime. Sleep Focus begins when that configured Wind Down period starts.
Recommended Free Tools
Will editing a schedule change every day in it?
Yes. A saved edit applies to every day selected in that schedule. If only one day needs a different time, create or edit a separate schedule for that day pattern.
How do I delete one sleep schedule?
Open Health > Browse > Sleep > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, edit the schedule you want to remove, and choose Delete Schedule.
The Bottom Line
Create recurring bedtime and wake-up plans in Health, assign them to the correct days, and use Clock’s Change Next Alarm Only when you need a temporary exception. Keep schedule alarms, ordinary Clock alarms, Wind Down, and Sleep Focus distinct so a one-time change does not rewrite the plan you rely on every week.
