Short answer: Apple’s documented summaries are separate Apple Intelligence controls in Safari, Messages, and Notifications—not one universal Siri command. In Safari, use Summarize on a supported webpage. Messages can show summaries of unread conversations, while Notification Summaries condense long or stacked alerts. Siri is part of the same platform, but Apple’s current guidance does not verify a spoken command that triggers all three actions.
What Siri can—and cannot—do here
The phrase “use Siri to summarize” suggests that you can say one sentence and have Siri read a summary of anything on your iPhone. Apple’s documented feature set is more specific. Apple Intelligence adds summarization to individual experiences, and each one has its own interface:
| Content | Apple feature | Where the summary appears | What Apple documents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Webpage | Safari Summarize | Safari, on the page you are viewing | A webpage can be summarized when Apple Intelligence is available. |
| Unread message conversation | Messages conversation summary | Messages, alongside the conversation | Apple lists summaries of unread conversations as a Messages feature. |
| Long or stacked alerts | Notification Summaries | The notification view and Lock Screen | Apple Intelligence surfaces key details from lengthy or grouped notifications. |
These are not interchangeable commands. A Safari summary is generated from the webpage currently open in Safari. A Messages summary concerns an unread conversation, not any arbitrary text Siri can retrieve. A notification summary condenses alerts that the system has grouped or identified as lengthy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApple’s public material does not establish a single, universal spoken prompt for all three tasks. You may see demonstrations or suggestions that use a voice request, but treat an exact phrase as unverified unless your current device accepts it. The reliable method is to use the relevant control in the app or system settings.

Check eligibility before looking for a summary button
Summarization depends on Apple Intelligence eligibility, not merely on having a recent version of Siri. Check these conditions first.
Compatible hardware and operating system
Apple’s current iPhone guidance lists the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later among Apple Intelligence-enabled phones in its iOS 27 context. Compatible iPads and Macs are also included in Apple’s platform materials. The exact model and operating-system combination matters, so confirm the current requirements for your device before troubleshooting an absent control.
Apple Intelligence availability can change with an operating-system release. The feature list described for one iOS version should not be assumed to apply unchanged to an older release or to every iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro configuration.
Supported language
Apple currently lists these Apple Intelligence languages:
- Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
- Danish
- Dutch
- English
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Norwegian
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- Swedish
- Turkish
- Vietnamese
The language used by Apple Intelligence and the language or region selected on the device can affect whether a feature is offered. Apple cautions that some features and devices are not available in every language or region.

Region and rollout status
Availability is not identical worldwide. Apple’s September 2026 announcement says Siri AI is rolling out in beta in English in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. It also says that Siri AI will initially be unavailable in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. That beta rollout is separate from the documented Safari, Messages, and notification summary controls; do not use the Siri AI rollout status as proof that a particular summary button should appear.
Turn on Apple Intelligence and confirm the feature is ready
Before attempting a summary, open the device’s Settings app and look for the Apple Intelligence and Siri settings area. Apple changes labels and setup screens between releases, so follow the wording shown on your device. If Apple Intelligence has not finished downloading or preparing its models, a summary control may be unavailable even on compatible hardware.
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a release that supports Apple Intelligence for that model.
- Open Settings and select the Apple Intelligence and Siri section, if it is offered.
- Complete any Apple Intelligence setup or model-download prompt.
- Set a supported language and check that your region is eligible.
- Return to the app you want to use and look for its own summary control.
If the Apple Intelligence section is missing, first verify the model and operating system rather than repeatedly restarting Siri. A device can have Siri enabled and still lack the hardware, software, language, or regional eligibility required for these summaries.
Summarize a webpage in Safari
Safari is the only one of the three documented paths that explicitly names a Summarize control for a webpage. The control requires Apple Intelligence on a supported iPhone.
Use the on-screen Summarize control
- Open Safari and load the webpage you want to understand.
- Wait for the page to finish loading. A page that is still changing, blocked behind a sign-in, or rendered only through an embedded viewer may not expose the same controls.
- Open Safari’s page controls or toolbar menu. The location and icon can differ by iOS release and orientation.
- Choose Summarize when that control is shown.
- Read the generated summary in Safari, then return to the page if you need the original wording, links, tables, or qualifications.
Apple’s support material confirms the Summarize control and the Apple Intelligence requirement, but the complete navigation sequence is not identical across every version. If you do not see the control, check the labels on your current device rather than following a screenshot from another release.

When Safari does not offer Summarize
- Check Apple Intelligence: confirm setup is complete in Settings.
- Check the model: the iPhone must be an eligible Apple Intelligence device.
- Check language and region: unsupported combinations can hide the feature.
- Try a normal webpage: a page inside an app, a document viewer, or a sign-in flow may not expose Safari’s webpage action.
- Update the operating system: Safari controls can change with the release.
A summary is an aid to orientation, not a replacement for the source. For legal, medical, financial, or technical decisions, open the original page and verify the exact details, exceptions, dates, and links.

Summarize unread conversations in Messages
Apple lists unread-conversation summaries in Messages as a separate Apple Intelligence capability. It is designed to help you catch up on a conversation, not to act as a general-purpose command for any text you point Siri toward.
Find a conversation summary
- Open Messages and locate a conversation with unread content.
- Look for the conversation-level summary presented by Messages. The exact placement and label can change with the iOS release.
- Read the summary, then open the conversation to inspect the actual messages before replying or acting on them.
If no summary is shown, confirm that Apple Intelligence is enabled and that the conversation contains unread messages. The feature is described for unread conversations; it should not be interpreted as a promise that every thread, selected paragraph, or copied text can be summarized on demand.
Why the original conversation still matters
A conversation summary can omit context such as a joke, an attachment, a change of plan, or a message that reverses an earlier decision. Use it as a catch-up view. Open the thread when a date, amount, address, consent, or instruction matters.
Summarize notifications and grouped alerts
Notification summaries address the alerts that compete for your attention. Apple says Apple Intelligence can summarize notifications and prioritize what is important. Its announcement describes key details being surfaced from long or stacked notifications, including an active group chat.

Enable and use Notification Summaries
- Open Settings and go to the Notifications area.
- Look for the Apple Intelligence notification-summary setting. The label and location can vary by operating-system release.
- Enable the summary option if it is available, and review any scheduling or prioritization choices shown on your device.
- When grouped or lengthy alerts arrive, read the condensed text in the notification view or on the Lock Screen.
- Tap an alert to open the source app whenever the summary leaves out a detail you need.
Notification Summaries are not a transcript of every notification. They are intended to surface key details from long or stacked alerts. A short alert may remain unchanged, while a busy group of alerts may be condensed into a brief description.
Messages and notifications are different features
A Messages summary belongs to an unread conversation inside Messages. A notification summary belongs to alerts delivered through the system notification layer, which can include an active group chat. The same underlying conversation may therefore be represented twice: once as a Messages conversation and once as a notification. Treat each as a different view with a different purpose.

Where Siri fits in
Siri is the conversational assistant associated with Apple Intelligence, but the existence of Siri does not turn every Apple Intelligence action into a voice shortcut. Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes Siri AI as a beta rollout in English for the iOS 27 family and related platforms. It does not document a single spoken instruction that reliably invokes Safari webpage summaries, unread Messages summaries, and notification summaries.
Use Siri for the commands your current release explicitly recognizes. For summarization, use the visible control in the relevant app or system interface. If you try a voice request and Siri responds that it cannot do that, the result does not mean Apple Intelligence is broken; it may simply be an unsupported or undocumented invocation.

No Apple Intelligence or Summarize setting appears
- Confirm the device is one of the supported models for the installed operating system.
- Install the latest compatible operating-system update.
- Finish Apple Intelligence setup and any required model download.
- Use one of Apple’s listed languages.
- Check regional availability, especially if you are in the European Union and testing the Siri AI beta rollout.
The control appears in one app but not another
That can be expected. Apple exposes webpage, conversation, and notification summaries independently. A working Safari Summarize control does not guarantee that Messages will show a summary for every thread or that Notification Summaries are enabled.

The summary is incomplete or misleading
- Open the source page, conversation, or notification and verify the relevant passage.
- Check whether the source contains attachments, images, links, or rapidly changing information that the summary may not represent fully.
- Do not treat a summary as evidence of a message that is not present in the original thread.
- For high-consequence decisions, rely on the source content and any authoritative document it references.
A voice prompt does nothing
There is no confirmed universal Siri prompt for these three summary tasks. Use the app’s documented control. Siri AI beta availability, language, and region can also affect what voice interactions are offered.
Privacy: what Apple says and what it does not promise
Apple describes Apple Intelligence as combining on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute. When Private Cloud Compute handles a request, Apple says personal data is not stored or accessible to Apple. This describes Apple’s stated architecture; it is not a claim that every summary is always processed only on the device.
Apple separately says that iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted in transit and that messages on iOS and iPadOS are encrypted on the device. Those statements apply to the messaging protections Apple describes. They should not be expanded into a claim that every notification or every app’s underlying data is handled identically.
For sensitive material, read the privacy information for the app and feature you are using, keep your operating system current, and open the original content before sharing or acting on a generated summary.
What Mail tells you about the feature boundary
Apple’s 28 October 2024 announcement also described Summarize for long Mail threads. Mail is a separate example: its availability does not mean that Messages uses the same control or that Siri can summarize every message on demand. The broader pattern is consistent—Apple Intelligence adds summaries inside particular apps and system surfaces, each with its own eligibility and interface.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Identify the source: Safari page, unread Messages conversation, or notification stack.
- Confirm Apple Intelligence support for your device, operating system, language, and region.
- Use the feature’s own control: Safari Summarize, the Messages conversation summary, or Notification Summaries.
- Use Siri only for voice actions your current release explicitly supports; do not assume a universal summary phrase.
- Open the original content before making a decision based on a condensed result.
- For privacy-sensitive content, distinguish Apple’s on-device and Private Cloud Compute descriptions from an absolute “always on device” claim.
