Start in the Arcade tab of the App Store or in the Games app, then use categories, new and updated releases, collections, events, and the full catalog as filters. When a game looks promising, open its individual listing and check the developer, device and software requirements, and regional availability. Apple’s labels—Arcade Originals, App Store Greats, and Timeless Classics—are useful catalog groupings, but none of the reviewed Apple material defines a label as proof that a game was independently developed.

What Apple Arcade can—and cannot—tell you about indie games

Apple presents Apple Arcade as a subscription catalog with more than 200 premium games. The exact number of titles and the games available change over time, so treat “over 200” as Apple’s broad catalog description rather than a permanent count. Apple also says Arcade games have no ads or additional in-app purchases, which makes it practical to sample several games instead of choosing only one.

“Indie game” is not an official Apple Arcade catalog filter in the material Apple publishes. A small studio, a creator-led team, a specialist publisher, or a larger company can all appear in the same browsing surfaces. Genre, collection placement, editorial prominence, or the absence of a familiar franchise does not establish who made a game.

Use Apple’s discovery tools to create a shortlist, then verify the developer on each game’s listing. That two-stage approach—broad browsing followed by title-level checking—is more reliable than assuming that an Arcade category or collection equals “indie.”

Use the Arcade tab as your discovery home

  1. Open the right surface. On an iPhone or iPad, open the App Store and select the Arcade tab. On supported devices, you can also browse Apple Arcade from the Games app. Apple describes the Arcade tab as the place to browse the catalog.
  2. Scan the editorial area first. Look for current highlights, newly added games, recent updates, limited-time events, and “coming soon” items. These areas change, so they are useful for finding games you would not encounter by searching for a specific name.
  3. Select See All when the page is too narrow. The full-catalog view lets you move beyond the games currently receiving the most prominent placement. Scroll through it when you want less editorial filtering.
  4. Open a title’s product page. Read the description, screenshots, age information, supported devices, software requirements, and developer or publisher details before deciding whether it fits your definition of independent.

Apple’s own editorial guidance describes the available routes this way: “You can browse the Arcade catalog by category, discover all the newest games, check out limited-time events, see what’s coming soon, or look through the entire catalog in the See All section.” Those are discovery paths, not a ranking of which path finds the most indie games; Apple does not publish such a comparison.

Filter by genre and mood before judging a developer

Categories are the fastest way to turn a large catalog into a manageable list. Choose the type of experience you actually want, then inspect the developers of the games that survive that first filter.

Starting preference Useful Arcade browsing approach What it tells you
Puzzle or thoughtful play Open the puzzle category and compare descriptions, screenshots, and session length. It narrows the mechanics and mood; it does not establish independent development.
Adventure or narrative Use the adventure category, then look for the tone, viewpoint, and story format you prefer. It helps match the experience to your taste, not the studio’s ownership structure.
Strategy Compare whether listings emphasize turn-based planning, real-time decisions, or management. It identifies the kind of thinking required; verify the developer separately.
Simulation Read the listing for the systems being modeled and whether play is short-session or long-form. It indicates the game loop and time commitment, not whether the team is indie.

Category names are starting filters. A game can be tagged in a way that does not match your personal definition of “indie,” and a genuinely independent project may be placed beside games from very different production environments. Keep the category decision and the developer decision separate.

Understand Apple’s three catalog groupings

Arcade Originals

Arcade Originals is one of Apple’s catalog groupings. It can be a useful place to look for games associated with the Arcade service, but the label alone does not prove that a title was made by an independent studio. Open each listing and check the named developer.

App Store Greats

App Store Greats groups games that have an App Store history or broad recognition in Apple’s ecosystem. Some may come from small teams and others may not. Treat the grouping as a catalog label rather than an ownership or studio-size classification.

Timeless Classics

Timeless Classics highlights established games. Its presence can help you find polished or familiar designs, but age, popularity, and independent development are different attributes. If your goal is to support or discover small creators, use the listing’s developer information instead of relying on this heading.

Apple’s 2019 launch announcement said Arcade games would be curated for “originality, quality, creativity, fun and their appeal to players of all ages.” That describes the criteria announced at launch; it is not a current guarantee about every title and does not define “indie.”

Check the individual listing for the developer

Once a category, collection, or highlight gives you a candidate, open the full game listing. Look for the developer or provider name and use that information consistently across your shortlist. If the listing names a publisher as well as a developer, record both: the studio that built the game and the organization distributing it may be different.

  • Record the exact name. Spelling and punctuation matter when you later search for the studio’s other work or compare two titles.
  • Distinguish developer from platform label. “Arcade Original” describes catalog placement; it does not identify the development team.
  • Read the description for production clues, cautiously. A personal story, a small-team reference, or a creator name can help you understand the project, but do not convert marketing language into a definite claim about ownership or staff size.
  • Check whether the game is a port or an adaptation. A title’s presence in Apple Arcade does not by itself tell you whether the current version was created exclusively for the service.

Apple’s reviewed pages do not provide a statistic for the percentage of Arcade titles that are independently developed. They also do not rank categories, highlights, updates, or collections by their success at finding indie games. A careful guide should therefore describe your process, not promise an “indie rate” or a guaranteed discovery shortcut.

Use new releases, updates, events, and coming-soon listings

New games

New-release sections are useful when you want to see what has just entered the catalog. A recently added game may be from a new team, an established studio, or a returning developer. Open the listing and apply the same developer check you use for older games.

Updated games

Updates can make an existing title worth a second look. Read what changed, then decide whether the update addresses your interests—new levels, modes, accessibility improvements, or other changes are more relevant than the update badge alone. Apple recommends watching for both newly released and updated games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limited-time events

Events can surface a game that is not otherwise prominent. If the event appeals to you, open the underlying game page and verify that it is available on your device and in your region before planning a longer play session.

Coming soon

Coming-soon entries are leads, not guarantees. A release date, supported device list, or regional availability can change before launch. Save the title if the interface permits it, then recheck the live listing when it becomes available.

Build a repeatable weekly discovery routine

Apple’s App Store editorial guidance recommends checking the Arcade tab each week for current highlights. Weekly visits are a practical cadence because the catalog can gain new games and updates, but Apple does not claim that weekly checking is statistically the best way to find indie projects.

  1. Start with the current highlights. Note any title whose genre and mood match what you want to play.
  2. Review new and updated sections. Separate genuinely new games from familiar titles that have received a substantial update.
  3. Browse one genre category. Rotate categories each week so your discovery is not limited to the most visible section.
  4. Open See All. Scan beyond the featured rows and open at least a few less-prominent listings.
  5. Verify each developer. Keep only games whose studio identity and production context fit your personal meaning of “indie.”
  6. Check compatibility and availability. Remove games that your device, operating-system version, or region cannot support.
  7. Try several candidates. Because Apple describes the subscription as providing catalog access without ads or additional in-app purchases, sampling is a sensible way to test fit.

Confirm device, software, and regional availability

Do not assume that a game visible in an editorial row will run everywhere Apple Arcade is offered. Apple cautions that availability varies by area and that hardware and software compatibility can differ. Before recommending a title to someone else—or committing to a download—check the game’s live listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Region: Confirm the title is offered in the reader’s App Store region. A catalog page can look different from one country or territory to another.
  • Device: Check whether the listing supports the specific iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or other Apple hardware you intend to use.
  • Operating system: Read the stated software requirement and update the device only if doing so is appropriate for it.
  • Storage and download constraints: Make sure the device has enough free space and that the connection can complete the download.
  • Account and subscription status: Verify that the Apple Account you use has the active Arcade access needed to launch the title.

These checks matter especially for a coming-soon game or a recommendation made across countries. Catalog examples and compatibility details can change, so use the current listing rather than an old screenshot or remembered requirement.

Compare shortlisted games without mistaking visibility for quality

A simple worksheet keeps discovery decisions transparent. The values below are the dimensions Apple’s browsing surfaces and individual listings can help you assess.

Criterion Questions to ask Evidence to use
Genre and mood Does the pace, tone, and session length match what I want? Category, description, screenshots, and any available preview material.
Developer identity Who made the game, and does that studio fit my definition of indie? The individual listing’s developer or provider information.
Catalog route Did I find it through a category, highlight, update, event, or the full catalog? The section where you discovered it; this records your process, not a success ranking.
Availability Can my device, software version, and region use it? Compatibility and availability details on the live listing.
Monetization fit Will the Arcade version interrupt play with advertising or extra in-app purchases? Apple’s description of Arcade games as having no ads or additional in-app purchases.

Featured placement is not a quality score, and a less-prominent listing is not evidence of a smaller or more independent team. Record where you found a game so you can diversify your browsing, but judge the title on the criteria that matter to you.

What the subscription changes about sampling

Apple describes Arcade as access to a catalog of premium games without ads or additional in-app purchases. That structure removes two common reasons to abandon an unfamiliar game early: an interruption during play and a request to pay for a core feature. It does not guarantee that every game will suit you, nor does it identify which developers are independent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use that access to test a small set of candidates from different routes: for example, one new release, one update, one category find, and one title from See All. Stop playing a candidate that fails your genre, accessibility, control, or performance requirements and move to the next listing. The value is in the ability to sample, not in forcing yourself to finish a game because it is included.

Optional controller support

A compatible Bluetooth game controller can make some games more comfortable to play. Apple’s Games page says users can connect a controller to get more out of a game. This is an optional accessory, not a discovery tool: it cannot identify an indie developer, improve catalog filtering, or bypass regional and device restrictions.

Check controller compatibility for both the Apple device and the individual game before buying or pairing anything. Touch controls may be preferable for some puzzle or short-session games, while a controller can be useful for titles designed around precise movement. Keep this choice separate from your developer and discovery criteria.

Troubleshoot common discovery problems

I cannot find the Arcade tab

Open the App Store and look for the Arcade tab, or try browsing Apple Arcade from the Games app on a supported device. If neither surface appears, check the Apple Account, device model, software version, and regional service availability. The catalog is not identical across every area or hardware configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game appears in an article or highlight but not in my catalog

Open the live listing and check your region and device compatibility. Apple says availability can vary by area and hardware/software compatibility. A title may also have moved out of a prominent row while remaining elsewhere in the catalog, so use See All and the search controls available on your device.

The collection label says nothing about the developer

That is expected. Arcade Originals, App Store Greats, and Timeless Classics are catalog groupings, not verified indie classifications. Open the title’s listing and use its developer information.

A coming-soon title has changed

Treat coming-soon information as provisional. Revisit the listing after launch and repeat the region, device, software, and developer checks before recommending it.

I am unsure whether a studio is independent

Do not guess from the game’s art style, price, collection, or prominence. Record the developer named by Apple and describe only what that listing establishes. If the available information does not make the studio’s status clear, call it “a game from [the listed developer]” rather than asserting that it is indie.

A practical decision rule for calling a game “indie”

Use a three-part rule:

  1. Discovery: Find the title through a category, collection, highlight, new-release or update section, event, coming-soon row, or the full catalog.
  2. Verification: Open the individual listing and identify the named developer or provider.
  3. Qualification: If the listing does not establish independent ownership or production, describe the game without the “indie” label. Say that it was discovered through Apple Arcade and name the developer instead.

This wording is more accurate than treating every Arcade Original as an independent production. It also remains useful when a studio’s ownership changes or when Apple reorganizes its catalog labels.

Limits of what can be concluded from Apple’s catalog

  • Apple’s reviewed materials do not state how many Arcade games are independently developed.
  • They do not publish a success rate comparing categories, editorial highlights, updates, events, or See All for indie discovery.
  • The “over 200 premium games” description is a broad figure from an Apple Developer page crawled in 2026, not a fixed title count.
  • Apple’s launch-era curation language is historical context, not a promise that every current game meets a particular creative or originality threshold.
  • Regional availability, supported hardware, software requirements, and individual catalog entries can change.

These limits do not make Apple Arcade difficult to use; they define what a careful recommendation can claim. Use the service’s browsing routes to find candidates, and use each live listing to establish the facts about that candidate.

Best practice in one pass

Open Arcade, choose a genre or current highlight, inspect new and updated titles, browse events and coming-soon items, and then use See All for breadth. Open every candidate’s listing, verify the developer, check region and compatibility, and sample several games under the subscription’s ad-free, no-additional-in-app-purchase model. Return weekly for fresh highlights and updates, while treating Apple’s collection labels as navigation aids—not proof of independent development.
