Android’s built-in Private DNS setting can route DNS lookups through a filtering provider, which may block some ad and tracker domains without installing an app. It is not a universal ad blocker: it filters domain requests, so ads served from shared domains or other complex delivery systems may still appear.
What is Private DNS on Android?
Private DNS lets Android use a DNS provider hostname for domain lookups. Android 9.0 and later includes built-in DNS over TLS support, according to the Android Enterprise Security Paper. The setting can encrypt DNS questions and answers, but encryption alone does not filter ads.
For DNS-level ad or tracker blocking, choose a provider whose service applies filtering rules. For example, AdGuard documents how to connect Android to its DNS service. A filtering provider can block requests to domains covered by its active rules, including requests from apps when they use the configured DNS path.

How to set up Private DNS to block ads on Android without an app
- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet > Private DNS, the path listed in Google’s Android Help. If the path differs, search Settings for “Private DNS.” If the setting is still unavailable, check your device manufacturer’s instructions.
- Select Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter the hostname supplied by a DNS filtering provider, then save the setting. Use the provider’s Android setup instructions to confirm the hostname and any service requirements; do not enter a web address unless the provider specifically gives that as its hostname.
Google’s documented choices are Off, Automatic, and Private DNS provider hostname. Menu labels and locations may vary by manufacturer and Android version.

Automatic or a custom provider hostname?

Before choosing a provider, review its privacy and logging terms. If a site or app fails after you switch, return to Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS and choose Automatic to troubleshoot.
Does Private DNS block every ad or tracker?
No. DNS filtering can stop requests to domains that match a provider’s blocking rules, but it cannot reliably remove every ad. Some ads are delivered from the same domains that provide wanted content; blocking those domains can break the content as well. Private DNS is also not a full-device VPN or a complete privacy shield. Google states on its Android Help page: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” It does not encrypt all device traffic, make browsing anonymous, or prevent all tracking.

If a website or app stops connecting after you set a filtering hostname, open Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS and switch to Automatic. If problems continue, try Off to check whether Private DNS is involved. You can restore a custom hostname later once you have confirmed the provider’s settings and the cause of the problem.
