To use Android 16 desktop mode, first confirm that your exact phone or tablet supports desktop windowing and wired display output; neither feature works on every Android device. Connect a compatible monitor using the manufacturer’s documented method, then choose whether to mirror your device screen or start a separate desktop session. Add a keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and use the desktop window controls to arrange apps.
Check whether your Android device supports desktop mode
Google calls the feature Desktop windowing and refers to a monitor as a connected display. Support depends on the device, so check your exact model and software version with its manufacturer before buying an adapter. Google’s Android Help guide says the feature is not available on all devices and directs users to their manufacturer for device-specific details.
For rollout context, Google announced on March 3, 2026 that connected-display support was generally available with Android 16 QPR3. That announcement named Pixel 8, 9, and 10 series devices and a range of Samsung models, including S26, Fold7, Flip7, and Tab S11. This is the list in that announcement, not a guarantee of every model’s current status; verify compatibility with your manufacturer.

Also check for external video output. A device may support desktop windowing without supporting the particular wired display connection you plan to use. Google does not specify one universal cable, port, or adapter for all devices.

Connect the monitor using a supported video path
Follow the connection instructions for your device model, then match its documented video output to an input on the monitor. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or a USB-C hub with HDMI may suit a device that supports compatible wired video output and a monitor with HDMI input, but neither accessory is universally compatible. If you need a hub for peripherals or charging, confirm its ports and power behavior for your specific setup; Google’s help page does not certify particular products.
The monitor’s input must match the output path the device supports. Google does not set a minimum monitor resolution or endorse a particular model, so check the device maker’s specifications rather than assuming that any USB-C port can send video.

Choose between screen mirroring and a desktop session
A connected monitor can show either a duplicate of the device’s screen or a separate desktop session, depending on the device and its settings. In mirroring, the external display repeats what is on the phone or tablet. In a desktop session, the monitor has its own workspace, where supported apps can appear in separate windows.
Google’s March 3, 2026 Android Developers announcement describes supported phones and foldables starting a new desktop session on the connected display, with a taskbar and multiple freely resizable app windows. The actual mode and available settings still depend on the device.

Connect a keyboard and mouse or trackpad
Use Bluetooth pairing or a wired connection according to the instructions for your device and peripherals. If connecting wired devices through a hub, check that the hub has the ports you need. A mouse is not the only pointer option: a trackpad can also be used on supported setups.
Google says that on a supported device connected to an external keyboard and trackpad, apps automatically open in Desktop windowing mode. Do not assume that exact behavior applies to every device or to every keyboard-and-mouse combination. Google’s QPR3 announcement specifically includes mouse and keyboard input compatibility as part of the connected-display experience.

Open and arrange app windows
On a device that supports Desktop windowing, you can move, resize, maximize, minimize, and switch between app windows. Use touch, a pointer, or keyboard controls as available on your device.

- Enter Desktop windowing: Drag an app’s top handle downward, choose Desktop windowing from the app header options, or press Action + Ctrl + Down arrow on a physical keyboard.
- Move a window: Drag its header bar to a new position.
- Resize a window: Drag one of its corners.
- Switch windows: Press Alt + Tab on the keyboard.
Google’s Android Help guide documents these window controls and the available touch, pointer, and keyboard interactions. Exact behavior can vary by device.

Troubleshoot common limitations
- The monitor stays blank or does not show a desktop: Recheck that the exact device supports external video output, that the connection follows its manufacturer’s instructions, and that the monitor is set to the matching input. Desktop windowing support alone does not establish that a particular adapter or port will work.
- You see a duplicate screen instead of a separate workspace: The device or its current settings may be using mirroring. Whether a separate desktop session is available depends on device support and settings.
- The mouse moves only within the connected display: Google says this is the default behavior when Desktop windowing is unsupported.
- You cannot drag a window to another display: Google says windows cannot be dragged to a display that is running a full-screen app.
- An app does not open as a desktop window: Check that the device supports Desktop windowing and use the app header or top-handle method to enter it. The keyboard-and-trackpad automatic behavior Google describes applies to supported devices, not necessarily every setup.
Google announced the connected-display experience as generally available with Android 16 QPR3 on March 3, 2026. Its earlier Android 16 announcement from June 10, 2025 described tablet desktop windowing as a feature rolling out later that year on compatible devices; the QPR3 announcement is the newer source for connected-monitor rollout context.
