You can connect a supported Sonos product to your router or network switch with Ethernet, but you do not need to wire every speaker. Sonos recommends Wi-Fi for most homes and small businesses when coverage is reliable in every room you use. Ethernet is worth considering when Wi-Fi coverage or reliability is poor, interference is high, or your installation has other network needs.
What changes when you connect Sonos to Ethernet?
Sonos supports both wireless and wired setups. In a standard wired setup, an already-added, Ethernet-capable Sonos product connects to your router or switch by cable. Depending on the product and configuration, it may also provide a dedicated wireless network—called SonosNet—for compatible Sonos products.
That does not mean every speaker has an Ethernet port, or that connecting one speaker automatically gives every Sonos product a wired connection. Some products use home Wi-Fi or must be connected directly by Ethernet if their model supports it. Portable products may remain on Wi-Fi even when other products are wired. Check Sonos’s current product guidance before planning around a particular model.

Should you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet?
Sonos recommends wireless for most homes and small businesses if Wi-Fi reaches all the rooms where you use Sonos. Ethernet is a conditional option, not a guaranteed sound-quality or speed upgrade: Sonos’s published guidance is qualitative and does not quantify improvements to reliability, range, or sound quality.
| Connection | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Home Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi reliably reaches all Sonos rooms. | No Ethernet run is needed, but coverage and interference still affect the connection. |
| Ethernet with SonosNet available | Coverage or reliability is inadequate, wireless interference is high, or the installation otherwise benefits from a wired connection. | A compatible wired product can provide a dedicated wireless network to compatible Sonos products; model limitations and network-channel considerations apply. |
| Ethernet with SonosNet disabled | You want selected products wired while others remain on home Wi-Fi. | This is a configurable arrangement. Check the product setting and confirm each product’s connection type in the app. |
Sonos identifies larger spaces, unreliable or unavailable Wi-Fi, high wireless interference, and some high-bitrate multiroom use as cases where Ethernet may be preferred. For its network guidance, see recommended settings for using Sonos with Ethernet networks.

How to connect a Sonos product by Ethernet
- Confirm the product supports Ethernet. Check the exact model’s ports and Sonos’s current product guidance. Do not assume every Sonos speaker has an Ethernet jack or that an adapter works with every model.
- Add the product to your Sonos system first. The standard wired-setup instructions begin with a product already added to the system.
- Connect the cable to the network. Run Ethernet from the Sonos product to your router or a network switch connected to the network.
- Wait about one minute. Sonos says products need time to change over after the wired connection is made.
- Check the app. Open the Sonos app’s About Your System screen and inspect Connection Type for each product.
If products are missing after the change, Sonos advises rebooting the missing products and waiting another minute for them to start. Then check Connection Type again using Sonos’s connection-status instructions.

Ethernet is not the same as SonosNet
Ethernet describes a wired network connection. SonosNet is a dedicated wireless network that a compatible wired Sonos product can make available to compatible products. A product can therefore be wired itself while another product connects through SonosNet wirelessly.

In the app’s About Your System screen, the Connection Type labels distinguish states such as “Ethernet,” “SonosNet (Ethernet),” and “SonosNet (wireless).” They indicate how that product is connected; they are not interchangeable descriptions of the whole system. Home theater setups can have additional connection behaviors, and surrounds or subwoofers cannot serve as the first-wired product for the dedicated network. Check the current compatibility guidance before choosing which product to wire.
Check the network path before troubleshooting
- Connect Sonos to a router or switch on your network. Sonos warns that Ethernet ports on Wi-Fi access points or extenders may not work for this purpose unless those devices themselves connect to the network by Ethernet.
- Avoid Ethernet-over-Power adapters for Sonos network connections, in line with Sonos’s guidance.
- If you use eero and wire multiple Sonos products, Sonos recommends connecting them to the same eero device or the same switch. It generally recommends wireless for Sonos with eero. Follow Sonos’s eero configuration guidance rather than assuming every mesh node’s Ethernet jack behaves the same way.
Should you disable Wi-Fi on a wired product?
Usually, do not treat disabling Wi-Fi as a routine step after connecting Ethernet. The setting is model-dependent: some products do not offer it, Move and Roam products keep Wi-Fi enabled, and some products disable Wi-Fi automatically when connected by Ethernet.
