Yes—an email alias can be used for ordinary address verification if it forwards messages to an inbox you can open and the website accepts the alias’s address format and domain. Enter the alias, open the forwarded confirmation message, and click its link or enter its code.
An alias only demonstrates access to that mailbox. It does not prove who you are. For banking, healthcare, legal services, travel documents, or any process that explicitly verifies identity, use an address the organization has approved and can associate with you.
Decide what the website is actually verifying
“Verify your email address” usually means the site sends a link or one-time code and expects you to retrieve it. An alias is suitable for this task when it forwards incoming mail to a mailbox you control.
Identity verification is different. A bank, doctor, lawyer, government service, employer, or other regulated organization may need to connect an address to a known customer, match records, or send important documents. Receiving a message through an alias cannot establish that connection. Mozilla Firefox Relay explicitly advises against using masks when identity must be verified, when an email is very important, or when you must receive attachments.

Inbox confirmation
The site is checking only that someone can access the address supplied during registration. Typical examples include a newsletter signup, a community account, a software trial, or a forum that sends an activation link.
Identity or high-consequence verification
The organization is checking more than mailbox access, or it may need reliable delivery of records and attachments. Use the address requested by the organization instead of trying to make an alias qualify. Ask the organization whether it supports an alternate address if privacy is a concern.
What an alias does—and what it does not do
An email alias is an additional address that routes mail to a destination inbox. The website sees the alias, while the destination mailbox remains private. Mozilla Relay masks and SimpleLogin aliases are examples of forwarding aliases: each can send incoming messages to a real or selected inbox.

- It can hide your primary address from the website. The registration record contains the alias rather than your normal mailbox.
- It can receive a verification link or code. The forwarding service relays the message to the destination you choose.
- It does not guarantee acceptance. A site can reject a domain, a subdomain-based mask, or an address that does not match its provider rules.
- It does not prove identity. Successful delivery proves that the person completing the signup could access the destination mailbox at that time.
- It may be needed later. Keep the alias active if the account might send password resets, security alerts, receipts, or future confirmations.
That last point is a practical precaution rather than a universal recovery rule. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish one policy for every website. Before disabling an alias, change the account’s email address through the site’s own settings and complete any new verification it requests.
Prepare a forwarding alias before you register
1. Choose a destination you can open now
Select an alias that forwards to a mailbox you currently control. If the forwarding service lets you choose among destinations, select the mailbox you will check during signup. Do not use an alias whose destination you cannot access or whose forwarding status is uncertain.

2. Confirm forwarding with a test message
Mozilla’s activation flow includes sending a test message and checking that it arrives. Use the equivalent test control in your alias provider, or send a test from another account. Confirm that the message reaches the intended inbox before you give the alias to a website.
- Open the alias provider’s dashboard.
- Check that the alias is enabled and that its destination address is correct.
- Send a test message to the alias.
- Open the destination mailbox and look in the inbox and spam or junk folders.
- Only proceed when the test arrives and the forwarding status remains enabled.
3. Keep the address simple
Use one alias service and one final mailbox where possible. SimpleLogin warns that forwarding services can be incompatible. Some forwarding layers do not preserve SPF, DKIM, or DMARC authentication, which can cause quarantine, spam placement, or rejection. Chaining an alias to another alias adds another place for a message to fail and makes troubleshooting harder.
4. Decide whether you need replies
Receiving a verification message is the minimum requirement. If you expect to reply to the site later, check whether your alias service supports reply forwarding or sending from the alias. Do not assume that a forwarded incoming message automatically lets you reply without exposing your primary address.
Use the alias to complete verification
- Start registration on the website. At the email field, enter the alias exactly as displayed by the forwarding provider. Check spelling, punctuation, and the domain.
- Submit the form. If the site accepts the address, it should display a notice that a link or code has been sent. That notice confirms form acceptance, not successful delivery.
- Wait briefly, then check the destination mailbox. Look in the inbox, spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and any focused or filtered views. Search for the site’s name, “verify,” “confirmation,” or “code.”
- Open the forwarded message. Follow the confirmation link in the message, or copy the one-time code into the registration page. Use the newest message if several codes were sent; older codes may expire.
- Finish any remaining step on the site. Some services return you to the browser after the link; others require you to enter the code manually or sign in again.
- Record the alias used. Save it in the account’s password manager entry or another secure record so you recognize it when a reset or alert arrives later.
Do not forward the verification code to another person. Treat it like a password-reset token: anyone who obtains it may be able to activate or alter the account.
Provider and method differences
There is no universal rule that every website accepts every alias. Compare the practical characteristics before choosing an address.

Apple-generated private relay addresses can vary by app developer. This makes Sign in with Apple a specific sign-in route, not a universal address workaround for a site that presents its own email-registration form.
Troubleshoot when the message does not arrive
Check the destination mailbox first
- Search spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and filtered folders.
- Search by the website’s name, the subject, or words such as “verify” and “confirmation.”
- Check whether the destination mailbox is full or blocking automated mail.
- Wait for a reasonable relay delay before requesting another code. Repeated requests can invalidate earlier codes or create several messages with different tokens.
Check the alias provider
- Confirm that forwarding is enabled rather than paused, disabled, or expired.
- Verify that the destination address is correct and still authorized.
- Send another test message to determine whether the problem affects all mail or only this website.
- Check the provider’s delivery or activity log if one is available.
Mozilla lists spam placement, mailbox blocking, disabled forwarding, and slower-than-usual relay as reasons a message may not arrive. A delay does not necessarily mean the website rejected the alias.
Request one new message
If the first message has not arrived after checking the above, use the site’s “send again” control once. Open the newest message and use its link or code. If the site limits requests, wait for its stated cooldown rather than repeatedly submitting the form.
Fix “invalid” or “address not allowed” errors
An immediate rejection happens before delivery. It usually reflects the site’s validation rules, not a forwarding outage.
- Domain blocked: The site may reject the alias provider’s domain or allow only addresses from selected large providers.
- Subdomain blocked: Mozilla notes that some sites reject Relay masks containing a subdomain.
- Format blocked: The site may disallow certain characters, unusually long local parts, plus-addressing, or disposable-looking patterns.
- Duplicate address: The site may already have an account associated with that alias, or may treat the alias as previously used.
There is no reliable way to force a rejected address to qualify. Use an address format the site explicitly accepts, or contact the site and ask whether it supports a privacy-preserving alternate address. If the service is performing identity verification, follow the organization’s required process instead of trying another alias.

Handle forwarded attachments and message limits
Verification messages are usually small, but some sites send an attachment with the confirmation email. Firefox Relay documents a 10 MB forwarding limit: messages with larger attachments will not be forwarded. Mozilla also advises against masks for emails where receiving attachments is important.
If an attachment is essential, use an address and delivery method the organization supports directly. Do not assume that changing the alias, adding another forwarding service, or requesting the message again will bypass a size limit.
Keep the alias usable for account recovery
An alias that works once can still become unusable later if it is disabled, deleted, or redirected. While the account depends on it:
- Keep forwarding enabled.
- Keep the destination mailbox accessible and monitored.
- Store the alias alongside the account’s login details in a password manager.
- Review the account’s recovery settings and add another recovery method when the site permits it.
- Before deleting the alias, change the account email through the site and complete its verification process.
Providers document forwarding and disablement controls, but they do not establish one universal recovery policy for every third-party site. Treat continued alias availability as your responsibility unless the site clearly offers another recovery route.

Understand the Firefox Relay limits and availability
Mozilla Support states that the free Firefox Relay service supports up to 50 masks in an article last updated April 29, 2026. That is a service allowance, not a claim about how many addresses a person should create or how many websites will accept them.

Mozilla’s FAQ says free Relay is available in most countries and separately lists the countries where Premium is available. Availability can change, so check Mozilla’s current country list when location matters rather than treating “most countries” as a permanent guarantee.
Relay’s documented 10 MB attachment limit also applies to forwarding behavior, not to the size of a website’s registration form or to every email service. A site can impose its own message, domain, or account limits independently.
Privacy and security practices
Use a separate alias per site when practical
A unique alias makes it easier to identify which site sent a message and to disable that address without affecting other accounts. It also limits the damage if one site shares or leaks its registration address.

The alias hides the destination address from the website, but the destination inbox remains the place where verification links and recovery messages arrive. Use a strong, unique password and the mailbox provider’s available multi-factor authentication.
Inspect links before clicking
Open the message you expected, check the sender and destination domain, and be wary of unrelated requests for passwords, payment details, or security codes. A forwarding service does not make a fraudulent message trustworthy.
Do not confuse forwarding with anonymity
The alias provider may retain routing or account information under its own policies, and the website still sees the alias and other data it collects during registration. An alias reduces exposure of your primary address; it does not erase all identifying information.
When an alias is the wrong tool
- The organization says the address must match an existing customer, patient, employee, student, or legal record.
- You must receive large or important attachments, such as travel documents or formal notices.
- The site rejects the alias domain or address format and offers no supported alternative.
- You cannot reliably access the destination mailbox or keep the alias active.
- You need a guaranteed recovery channel for a high-value account and the provider’s forwarding behavior is uncertain.
In these cases, use the address requested by the organization or ask it for an approved privacy option. Mozilla’s examples of situations where masks are not recommended include banks, doctors, lawyers, and boarding passes.

- Is the site checking simple mailbox access, or is it verifying your identity?
- Does the alias forward to a mailbox you can open right now?
- Did a test message arrive successfully?
- Does the site accept the alias domain, subdomain, and address format?
- Will you need password resets, alerts, replies, or attachments later?
- Are you using one forwarding service and a final mailbox rather than several chained hops?
- Will you keep the alias enabled for as long as the account depends on it?
If every answer supports forwarding and ordinary inbox confirmation, enter the alias and complete the link-or-code step. If any answer points to identity verification, critical documents, or unsupported delivery, use an address the organization explicitly accepts.
