AirPrint lets you print from a compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a supported printer without installing printer drivers. To get started, confirm that your exact printer model supports AirPrint, connect it to your network, and select it from the print controls in an app. The steps differ slightly by device, and not every app offers printing.
What AirPrint does—and what you need
AirPrint is Apple’s wireless printing technology for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. With a compatible printer, Apple devices can discover it and send print jobs without additional printer drivers or software. Apple describes features such as automatic media selection and enterprise-class finishing, but availability depends on the printer and the options exposed by the app.
- A compatible printer: Check AirPrint support for the exact model, not just the manufacturer or product family. Apple’s compatibility information is organized by brand, model, or category and is supplied by manufacturers.
- A network connection: The printer must be reachable over a supported connection. For iPhone and iPad printing, Apple’s standard instructions call for the printer and device to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- An app with printing controls: Many apps offer Print from a share menu or actions menu, but printing is not available in every app.
If you are choosing a printer, check exact-model compatibility first, then make sure its network setup method works for your home or office and that its available print options meet your needs. Do not assume every AirPrint printer offers the same finishing or media options.

The setup route depends on the printer. Apple’s general guidance describes several possible methods, but it is not a model-specific procedure. Use the printer’s manual or manufacturer instructions for the exact button names and sequence.

- Printer control panel: Some models let you select a Wi-Fi network and enter its password on the printer’s display.
- Mac connected by USB: Some manufacturers provide a setup assistant that configures the printer while it is temporarily connected to a Mac by USB.
- Temporary printer Wi-Fi network: Some printers create a temporary network that a setup assistant uses to pass along the home or office network details.
- WPS: If both the router and printer support Wi-Fi Protected Setup, the printer may offer a WPS-based connection method.
After setup, confirm that the printer is on the intended network. For the standard iPhone and iPad workflow, connect the Apple device to that same Wi-Fi network as well.
Print from an iPhone or iPad
- Open the document, photo, webpage, or other content in an app that supports printing.
- Open the app’s Share controls or Actions menu, then choose Print. Depending on the app, Print may be farther down the share sheet. If the option is missing, check the app’s help or user guide.
- Tap No Printer Selected, then choose the AirPrint printer. If it does not appear, use the troubleshooting steps below.
- Set the number of copies and any page or other options the app offers.
- Tap Print.
To check or cancel an active job, open Print Center on the device. You can cancel a job there if it is paused, incorrect, or no longer needed.

Print from a Mac
If your Mac and network printer are already on the same Wi-Fi network, the printer may be available without additional setup. To add or manage printers, open Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners, then use the controls to add the printer if it is not listed.

macOS commonly uses AirPrint for compatible printers. If the model does not support AirPrint, Apple directs users to obtain the latest printer software from the manufacturer. Mac also offers other network-protocol setup choices, but some generic-protocol configurations may provide fewer features than the printer’s intended software or AirPrint setup.

Fix a printer that does not appear or will not print
Check the network and printer status
- Make sure the printer is powered on and reports a normal, ready status.
- For iPhone or iPad, confirm both the device and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check that the Mac is on the intended network too. A network printer may take a minute or two to appear on a Mac.
- Confirm that the printer is not connected only through an unsupported path. AirPrint does not work with a printer plugged into the USB port of an AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule, or with a printer connected to a computer through Bluetooth.
Check supplies, connections, and the print queue
- Look for paper jams and confirm there is enough ink or toner.
- Check that any required cables are connected properly.
- Verify that you selected the intended printer, particularly if multiple printers are listed.
- On iPhone or iPad, inspect Print Center for a paused or blocked job. On a Mac, check the printer’s queue for jobs that are stopped or holding up later work.
Try another app and check for updates
Attempt to print the same item, or a simple test document, from another app. If printing fails only in one app, consult that app’s documentation. For an AirPrint-compatible model, also check the manufacturer’s support information for available updates.
If the printer still cannot be added to a Mac
Apple notes that a printer may be off, connected to a different network, or unavailable because a Mac sharing it is asleep or has stopped sharing. If the printer does not appear in the list, adding it by IP address is another Mac option; the printer’s documentation can provide the address and supported protocol.

Resetting the Mac printing system is a last resort, not a routine discovery fix. A reset removes printer entries, completed print jobs, and presets, so you will need to add printers again and recreate any settings you rely on.
