You can reduce what you disclose by typing only the unclear words into an AI tool instead of uploading a prescription photo—but that does not guarantee privacy. The safest option is to ask the dispensing pharmacist to clarify the label. If you use AI, treat it only as a transcription aid, check the service’s current privacy terms first, and confirm any uncertain instruction with a pharmacist or prescriber before acting.
Start with the label and the dispensing pharmacist
Read the printed pharmacy label first. If you cannot make out a word, abbreviation, or instruction, call the pharmacy that dispensed the medicine or contact the prescriber. They can clarify what the label says and resolve questions about how to take the medicine.
AI may help with legibility, but it is not an authority on your prescription. A tool can misread small print, abbreviations, or characters that look alike. Official FDA materials describe how software oversight depends on a function’s purpose and potential patient-safety risk; they do not validate general-purpose consumer AI for reading prescriptions. See the FDA’s overview of device software functions and policy guidance.

Check the AI service’s privacy terms before sharing anything
A prescription photo or even a transcription can reveal sensitive health information. Before using an AI or OCR service, review its current privacy notice and terms. Look specifically for whether submitted images and prompts are retained, shared with others, or used to improve or train models. Check whether the service offers deletion controls and whether any health-related intended use is clearly stated. If the terms do not answer your questions, do not upload the image.

Do not assume HIPAA automatically protects information you enter into a consumer AI app. ONC and HHS explain that HIPAA protections apply to information held by covered providers and insurers, but generally do not govern an app that is neither a covered entity nor a business associate when a person directs health information to it. The exact status depends on the app’s relationship with a covered organization. ONC’s consumer HIPAA guidance and HHS guidance on health apps and APIs explain the boundary.
HIPAA not applying does not mean every app is free from other obligations, nor does it mean the app is private. The FTC notes that other federal requirements, including the FTC Act and the Health Breach Notification Rule in applicable circumstances, may matter. Its Mobile Health App Interactive Tool and consumer health information guidance explain why app practices and privacy promises still matter. These are US federal resources; they do not establish the privacy terms of any particular AI product.

Minimize what you share
If you decide to use a tool, share as little as possible. Instead of uploading a photograph, manually type only the unclear words or phrase when you can. If an image is necessary, remove identifying details such as the patient’s name, address, prescription number, pharmacy details, and barcode before submitting it.

Limit the request to transcription or plain-language explanation
Ask the tool to transcribe the printed wording or explain that wording in plain language. For example: “Please transcribe this label exactly. Mark any characters you cannot read; do not infer missing text.” If you are entering text, you can ask: “Explain what this printed instruction means in plain language without changing or recommending a dose.”
Do not ask AI to choose or change a dose, settle conflicting directions, diagnose a condition, or guess what the prescriber intended. Do not use its response to decide whether to skip a dose, split a tablet, or combine medicines. Ask the pharmacist or prescriber instead.

Compare the result with the original before acting
- Check every word and number in the AI output against the printed label. Treat uncertain or missing characters as unresolved, not as an invitation for the tool to guess.
- If the wording is still unclear, or the AI output differs from the label, contact the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber and ask them to clarify the instruction.
- Follow the confirmed prescription directions. Do not make a treatment or dosage decision based on an AI interpretation.
FDA materials discuss software according to its function and the possible risk to patient safety; regulatory guidance is not proof that a consumer AI tool has been approved or validated for prescription reading. See the FDA’s device software overview and policy for device software functions.
