Use AI to organize your concerns, draft questions, or format a symptom log—not to diagnose you or decide what care you need. The useful result is a short, accurate set of notes you can check and bring to your clinician. The American Medical Association (AMA) recommends using chatbots to learn and prepare while keeping medical assessment and decisions with a doctor.
What AI can—and cannot—do before your appointment
A chatbot can help turn rough notes into a focused question list, suggest follow-up questions a clinician may ask, explain unfamiliar medical terms in simpler language, or organize observations into a symptom log. The AMA describes these as preparation tasks, not a substitute for a medical visit. AMA: Four AI prompts to help prepare for your doctor’s appointment
It cannot reliably assess your health from a few messages or account for your complete medical history. It may leave out important context, use incomplete or outdated information, or sound certain when it is wrong. Treat its output as a draft to verify—not as a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a reason to delay care.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare your own notes first
Start with what you know, before asking a chatbot to reorganize it. NIH guidance recommends putting the most important concerns first so you can raise them during the visit rather than waiting until the end. NIH: Prepare for a doctor’s appointment

- Made in USA - Proudly produced in Ohio by a Veteran-owned business
- KEEP TRACK OF YOUR IMPORTANT CONTACTS: Every time you go to the doctor it seems like they ask for something different - or are asking you to schedule something, or where do you get your prescriptions filled? This book keeps all of that in one place with spaces to write down your insurance information, providers, pharmacies, physicians and specialists.
- KEEP TRACK OF IMPORTANT MEDICAL HISTORY: Along with asking you for all the information under the sun, new providers or specialists are often curious about your medical history-in this book you can easily track allergies, illnesses you’ve had, medications, surgeries, hospital visits and other medical conditions you may have. For people with chronic illness and other long-term medical issues it can be hard to remember these things, so it’s great to have them all in one place.
- LOG YOUR VACCINATION AND HISTORY OF TESTS: Now that were in the pandemic era, most lucky people are more aware of their vaccinations than ever before - if you’ve dealt with chronic illness your whole life, this is just another thing you have to track. The Medical Journal makes it easy for your - there are spaces to track dates and relevant info relating to your vaccinations and medical test history.
- LOG YOUR OFFICE VISITS AND IMPORTANT NOTES: This book 6” x 9” book has 94 pages (2 entries per page) dedicated to your office visits and tracking information that comes from those. Each entry has space for you to log important information and stats from your visit - blood pressure, weight, heart rate, temperature, the doctor you visited and their address, notes from the visit, advice given, and what exactly was performed. - Write the main reason for the appointment and the two or three concerns you most want addressed.
- For a symptom, note when it began, how often it happens, what seems to change it, and how it affects daily activities. If useful, add its location, severity, and time of day.
- List prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and supplements. MedlinePlus recommends bringing this list and writing down questions for the visit. MedlinePlus: Making the most of your doctor’s appointment
Keep symptom entries observational: “pain on the right side after walking” is more useful than assigning yourself a diagnosis. A notebook or health journal works just as well as a digital tracker if you prefer paper.
Use a chatbot for a bounded task
Give the tool a narrow job and tell it not to diagnose. Share only the non-identifying details needed for that job; do not enter your name, date of birth, address, account numbers, or other identifying information. The AMA cautions that chatbot privacy protections may differ from those in a physician’s office, so do not assume your conversation is confidential in the same way as a clinical record. Privacy controls vary by service.

Turn notes into questions
Try a prompt such as: “Help me turn these notes into five questions for my doctor. Do not diagnose me. Keep uncertainty visible, and do not add facts I have not provided.” Review every suggested question, remove anything that does not reflect your concern, and put the most important ones first. The AMA offers the question, “What questions should I ask my doctor to better understand this situation?” as a starting point.
Make a symptom log easier to scan
You can ask: “Organize these observations into a concise symptom log with columns for date or time, what I noticed, how long it lasted, and its effect on daily activities. Do not infer a cause or diagnosis.” Check the result against your original notes. Correct mistakes and delete anything the chatbot has inferred rather than you observed.

Ask the chatbot what information a clinician might want to clarify about the symptom, such as its severity or pattern over time. Use the suggestions to notice gaps in your notes—not to guess at answers. If you do not know or cannot remember, say so at the appointment.
Clarify unfamiliar terms
If you have a medical term or instruction you do not understand, ask for a plain-language explanation and a list of questions to confirm with your clinician. Check the explanation during the visit, especially if it could affect a decision about your care.

Check the draft, then bring a concise list
- Compare it with your own notes. Remove invented details, incorrect dates or patterns, and conclusions you did not make.
- Keep the useful parts short. Bring your prioritized questions, symptom observations, and current medicine and supplement list.
- Use the visit to verify. Tell the clinician AI helped organize the notes when that context is relevant, and ask them to correct any misunderstanding. The clinical conversation—not the chatbot’s draft—should guide assessment and decisions.
When not to use AI for medical guidance
Do not use a chatbot to handle an emergency, diagnose a condition, or choose or change treatment. The AMA’s patient guidance says serious or sudden symptoms warrant immediate care or a call to 911; do not wait for a chatbot response. If a concern is not an emergency but you are unsure what to do, contact a qualified health professional rather than asking a chatbot to decide. AI can help you prepare what to say, but it does not have your full chart or the context needed to take responsibility for your care.

Choose the preparation method that works for you
| Approach | Convenience | Privacy | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted draft | Can quickly organize rough notes or suggest questions. | You provide information to a service whose privacy protections may differ from a clinician’s office; avoid identifying details. | Requires checking against your observations and records; the chatbot may omit context or be wrong. |
| Handwritten or typed list | Direct and simple; you organize it yourself. | Stays with you unless you share or store it elsewhere. | Reflects what you record, though you may overlook details or forget to include a concern. |
Either method can help you arrive prepared. Use AI only if its convenience is worth the extra review and privacy care; a simple list you trust is better than an elaborate draft you cannot verify.
