Yes—you can use AI to explore a wide range of subjects, including AI itself. The key is to use it to strengthen your understanding, not just to produce finished work. Ask it to explain, question, hint, and respond to your attempts; then check important claims against reliable sources. A fluent answer can help you study, but it does not prove that you learned.

What AI can—and cannot—do for learning

Generative AI can make study more interactive: it can explain a concept at different levels, answer follow-up questions, offer examples, and comment on your work. That flexibility can be useful when you need another explanation or want to practise a skill.

But completing a task and learning from it are different outcomes. The OECD’s Digital Education Outlook 2026 says that generative AI can support learning when guided by clear teaching principles. It also warns that, without pedagogical guidance, outsourcing work may improve task performance without producing real learning gains. In other words, a polished essay or correct-looking solution is not evidence that you can explain or reproduce the work yourself.

AI is not established as equally effective for every subject, age group, or learner. Treat it as a flexible learning aid, not a guarantee or a substitute for teaching, practice, and reliable materials.

Use AI in a way that keeps you thinking

A useful study interaction leaves the important reasoning to you. Instead of asking for a completed assignment or solution, ask for support that helps you take the next step.

  1. Set a specific goal. Name the concept or skill you want to understand, and say what you already know or where you are stuck.
  2. Request an explanation or hint. Ask for a simpler explanation, a question to think about, or one hint at a time—not the whole answer.
  3. Try the work yourself. Solve the problem, answer the question, or explain the idea in your own words before asking for feedback.
  4. Ask for targeted feedback. Have the AI identify a gap or explain why a step may be wrong. Then revise your answer yourself.
  5. Check important claims. Compare factual, technical, or consequential claims with dependable course materials, books, documentation, or other authoritative sources.
  6. Test what you retained. Close the conversation and explain the concept or work through a fresh example without help.

This is a practical application of pedagogy-first guidance, not a protocol that the cited sources establish as proven for every learner. Adjust the approach to the subject and your level of experience.

Choose the right role for AI

AI can function as a tutor, partner, or assistant. The label matters less than whether the interaction supports your reasoning and whether you can check what it tells you.

Role Useful request What to watch for
Tutor “Explain this concept in simpler terms, then ask me a question to check my understanding.” Do not treat a clear explanation as proof of mastery; answer the question without relying on the explanation.
Partner “Give me a practice problem, but wait for my attempt before showing a solution.” Make sure you are doing the solving or reasoning rather than just reading a completed response.
Assistant “Comment on my draft and point out one unclear argument.” Review suggestions critically and make your own decisions about changes.

When comparing tools or deciding how to use one, consider whether it guides you through reasoning or supplies a finished answer, gives feedback you can act on, and makes it possible to verify its claims. Also look for clear privacy practices, age-appropriate design, and a defined educational purpose.

Why foundational knowledge still matters

You need some knowledge of a subject to recognise when an AI response is incomplete, misleading, or wrong. This creates a practical limit: AI can help you build knowledge, but it cannot remove the need to develop enough understanding to evaluate its help.

The OECD also points to potential skill atrophy when people outsource writing and problem-solving. If the AI routinely performs the parts you are meant to practise, you may finish faster without building those skills. Keep the learning task—such as drafting, calculating, or reasoning—in your hands, and use AI for feedback or support around it.

Learning about AI is part of the task

Using AI well involves more than learning to write prompts. AI literacy includes understanding how systems work, evaluating their outputs critically, and using them ethically and creatively. The OECD and European Commission’s AI literacy framework addresses these ideas for primary and secondary education; it is not a universal curriculum for adults.

When studying AI, ask questions such as:

  • What does this system appear able to do, and where might its limits matter?
  • Which parts of its response can I verify using a trusted source?
  • How should I use or disclose AI assistance in this learning context?
  • What information should I avoid sharing, and who could be affected by how I use the output?

These questions make the tool itself an object of study, rather than treating it as an unquestioned authority.

Set privacy and age-appropriate boundaries

Educational use also requires attention to the learner and the setting. UNESCO’s guidance for generative AI in education and research recommends a human-centred approach that considers privacy, age limits for independent conversation, and age-appropriate pedagogical design and validation.

Before using a tool with a child or in a school context, check the service’s age requirements and privacy terms, and follow the institution’s rules. Do not enter personal, confidential, or sensitive information unless the tool and the context are appropriate for it. Safeguards differ between tools, so do not assume that one product’s protections apply to another.

What teacher-use figures do—and do not—tell you

The OECD’s 2026 Digital Education Outlook page reports that, in the TALIS 2024 figures it cites, 37% of lower secondary teachers used AI for their job in 2024; 57% agreed that AI helps write or improve lesson plans; and 72% believed AI can harm academic integrity by letting students pass off work as their own. These figures describe reported teacher use and views in lower secondary education. They are not measurements of student learning outcomes, nor prevalence figures for all teachers or learners.

They illustrate why educational use involves both potential support and concerns about integrity. They do not show that an individual learns a subject better by using AI.

How to tell whether you are actually learning

Judge learning by what you can do without the AI’s answer in front of you. After a study session, try to explain the idea in your own words, solve a new example, or identify why a particular answer is sound. If you cannot, return to the concept and practise rather than counting a completed task as mastery.

For a longer-term view, revisit the subject later and see whether you can still recall and apply what you learned. Keep AI’s feedback in the role of a prompt for your own thinking, and verify important claims with material you trust.
