Adobe Acrobat Reader is free for Mac and handles everyday PDF tasks: opening and viewing files, searching, annotating, filling and signing forms, sharing, and printing. The key limitation is that Reader annotations do not permanently change the PDF’s original text or images; Adobe directs users who need those edits to Acrobat.
Get Reader and check Mac compatibility
Start at Adobe’s Acrobat Reader Help center and follow its link to the Reader download page. Adobe’s desktop download page lets you choose a language, operating system, and connection speed; follow the prompts shown there because installer screens can change.
Before downloading, check Adobe’s current system requirements. As listed on June 22, 2026, Reader supports Intel or M1 processors and macOS 12, 13, 14, or 15. Adobe lists 2 GB RAM, 380 MB of available storage, and a 1024×768 display resolution. These requirements can change, so use the live page to confirm support for your Mac and macOS version.

If an older Reader installation is giving you trouble, Adobe says releases from before August 2019, Reader 2017, and Reader 2015 cannot be licensed on macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. To check for an available update in Reader, choose Help > Check for updates and follow the on-screen instructions.

Open, read, and find information in a PDF
Open a PDF in Reader to view it, search its contents, share it, print it, sign it, or add annotations. For help with a file that will not open, Adobe’s Reader Help and FAQ links to troubleshooting guidance for opening PDFs, printing, and updating the app.
Annotate a PDF without changing its original content
Use Reader’s annotation tools to mark up a document for review. Adobe lists sticky notes, text added to a page, highlighting, underlining, strikethrough, and freehand drawing. These add comments or reading marks; they do not permanently revise text or images that were already in the PDF.
For permanent changes to existing PDF text or images, Adobe says to use Acrobat rather than Reader. The distinction matters when a document needs a genuine content revision, not a comment or visual markup.

Fill, sign, and save a PDF form
First check whether the PDF has interactive fields. If you can select a field, click it and type. Press Tab to move to the next field or Shift+Tab to return to the previous one. A flat form has no selectable fields; use Fill & Sign to place text and other symbols where needed.
To save the completed form on macOS, choose File > Save As and give it a new filename. Saving a separate copy helps preserve the original blank form.

Reader can also add a signature by typing or drawing one, or by using an image. Adobe’s FAQ describes free signature requests as limited; check Adobe’s current plan terms if you need to request signatures from other people.
Print a form with the right entries and comments
Choose File > Print. In the Comments and Forms options, select the output that fits what you need:

- Document prints the form and typed entries.
- Document And Markups includes comments.
- Form Fields Only prints only entries from an interactive form.
Use Reflow and accessibility options
Reflow presents text in a single column, which can make reading easier by reducing horizontal scrolling. It is a reading layout, not an editing or printing mode: Adobe says saving, editing, and printing are unavailable while Reflow view is active. Forms, comments, digital-signature fields, and page artifacts may not display normally; a page that combines readable text with form or signature fields may not reflow.
For accessibility adjustments, Adobe documents an Accessibility Setup Assistant and preferences in Reader. Its FAQ also describes Mac support for VoiceOver, magnification, high contrast, and reflow. Interface labels can vary across app versions, so consult Adobe’s accessibility guidance for current directions.
