A Venmo virtual card is, in practice, the virtual card number that comes with the Venmo Credit Card. Once you are approved for that card, the number appears in the Venmo app, and you can use it for online purchases after confirming a few identity details. Venmo also offers a separate Venmo Debit Card whose card details you can view in the app. That card is tied to your Venmo balance, not to a credit line, so the two products should not be treated as the same thing.
Which Venmo card you are looking for
Most people searching for a “Venmo virtual card” mean the virtual number attached to the Venmo Credit Card. Venmo describes it this way: “A virtual card number is available to you in the Venmo app as soon as you are approved for a Venmo Credit Card.” (Venmo: Getting Started with your Venmo Credit Card)

Venmo’s help article on getting started with the credit card does not give a full button-by-button path for the first time you view the number, so the steps below follow the parts Venmo documents.

Not every merchant accepts every Venmo payment method. Venmo’s guidance on changing payment methods says some balance-based online payments may require a backup payment method. Check the payment options shown at checkout before you complete the order, and if the Venmo option is missing or fails, choose another method on your Venmo account rather than retrying the same entry repeatedly. Venmo states: “Once you get a new virtual card number, the old virtual card number will no longer work.” Venmo limits these requests to one every 24 hours, so save the new number right away and do not expect a second replacement the same day. (Venmo: Venmo Credit Card Security)
Disabling the physical credit card does not stop online use of the virtual card. Venmo notes that previously authorized pending physical-card transactions may still complete after you disable it. If your goal is to stop all online spending, replacing the virtual number is the step that retires the old number.

What the Venmo Purchase Program covers
Venmo’s Purchase Program applies to eligible purchases made through participating websites. It does not apply automatically to every transaction in which you enter a card number. Whether a particular purchase qualifies depends on the merchant and the way the payment was made, so check Venmo’s current Purchase Program terms before relying on it for a specific order. Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common problems
- No virtual number in the app. The number is available only after approval for the Venmo Credit Card. If you have not been approved, there is nothing to copy yet.
- Looking for card details but seeing the wrong card. The credit virtual number and the debit card details are in different parts of the app. Confirm which card you are looking at before you copy anything.
- Checkout rejects the entry. Re-check the number, expiration date, and CVV. If the number was replaced, the old one no longer works, so use the newest number.
- Venmo is not offered at checkout. The merchant may not accept that Venmo payment method. Choose another payment option on the merchant’s page.
- Verification prompt blocks copying. Venmo requires the last four SSN digits, expiration date, and CVV before the credit card number can be copied. If these details do not match what Venmo has on file, contact Venmo support through the app’s help section.
