Yes—a TL431 can detect a battery-voltage threshold and control a separate switching device or charger feedback loop. It is an adjustable shunt reference, not a complete battery charger: it does not, by itself, limit charging current or provide the charge-termination algorithm a lithium-ion cell requires.

Use it for voltage monitoring, regulation, or a secondary overvoltage cutoff when the rest of the circuit is designed for the battery chemistry. For lithium-ion charging, use a dedicated charger IC or a fully designed and validated CC/CV charger.

What a TL431 cutoff does—and what it does not do

The TL431 is a three-terminal adjustable shunt reference. Its REF pin responds when the sensed voltage approaches its nominal internal reference of about 2.495 V; its cathode then sinks current, subject to the device’s operating requirements. That cathode is not a push-pull logic output, so a transistor, MOSFET, relay driver, optocoupler, or charger feedback input normally does the actual control. See TI’s TL431 specifications and the TL431 datasheet for the selected device’s limits and application guidance.

“Cutoff” can mean several different things. A circuit that regulates a charger’s output voltage is not necessarily terminating charge, and a backup overvoltage disconnect is not a normal charging algorithm.

  • Voltage regulation: holds the charger output near a set voltage.
  • Charge termination: ends a charging cycle when the chemistry’s end-of-charge conditions are met.
  • Overvoltage protection: interrupts charging if a fault pushes voltage beyond a safety threshold.
  • Float control: maintains a suitable long-term voltage, mainly relevant to lead-acid applications.

A TL431 can participate in these functions, but the surrounding power stage determines what the circuit actually does. Its cathode current is a control signal; do not route substantial battery charging current through the TL431.

How the sensing divider sets the threshold

Connect a resistor divider across the voltage being monitored: RTOP from the sensed positive rail to REF, and RBOTTOM from REF to the return. The nominal threshold is:

Vcutoff ≈ VREF × (1 + RTOP/RBOTTOM)

Solving for the upper resistor gives:

RTOP = RBOTTOM × (Vcutoff/VREF − 1)

For a nominal 4.20 V threshold, take VREF as 2.495 V and choose RBOTTOM = 10.0 kΩ:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTOP ≈ 10.0 kΩ × (4.20/2.495 − 1) ≈ 6.83 kΩ

A standard 6.81 kΩ upper resistor with 10.0 kΩ below REF gives about 4.196 V nominal under the simplified equation. That is a design estimate, not a guaranteed 4.200 V trip point.

10PCS 431 TL431 TL431A TL431ACDR SOP-8 Voltage Reference IC
  • Package: This programmable voltage reference is housed in an SOIC-8 surface-mount package, suitable for compact power supply and voltage regulation circuits.
  • Function: It is a precision programmable shunt regulator. It can be used as a stable voltage reference, an error amplifier in power supplies, or a simple voltage comparator.
  • Working Voltage: It has a wide operating voltage range, typically from 2.5V to 36V, allowing it to be used in various low and high voltage applications.
  • Working Current: The typical reference current is very low (1-2 µA), but the cathode current can range from 1 mA to 100 mA, depending on the external resistor divider.
  • Pin Function: Key pins are the Reference input (REF), the Anode (A, connected to ground), and the Cathode (K, which acts as the output and positive terminal).

Account for reference current and tolerance

A more complete first-order estimate includes current into the REF pin:

VBAT ≈ VREF × (1 + RTOP/RBOTTOM) + IREF × RTOP

Actual threshold also depends on the TL431 grade’s reference-voltage tolerance, resistor tolerances, temperature, PCB leakage, noise, cathode operating conditions, and voltage drop between the sense point and battery terminals. TI lists TL431 grades with different initial accuracy, including approximately 0.5%, 1%, and 2% options, as well as operating and current limits; check the exact manufacturer, part suffix, and package rather than assuming every TL431 is interchangeable.

Choose divider current high enough that REF input current and board leakage do not dominate the error, but not so high that the divider needlessly drains a battery. Very large resistors reduce drain while increasing sensitivity to leakage and noise. Very small resistors waste power. Verify the threshold in the assembled circuit at the battery terminals.

Design sequence

  1. Select the exact TL431 variant. Use its datasheet for reference tolerance, REF current, minimum cathode current, allowable cathode current, temperature range, pinout, and stability guidance.
  2. Choose a sensible divider current. Balance measurement error against continuous battery drain.
  3. Calculate and select resistor values. Use standard values, then calculate the resulting nominal threshold rather than rounding blindly.
  4. Estimate worst-case error. Include reference and resistor tolerances, temperature, wiring drop, and the REF-current term.
  5. Design the control and power path. Provide the TL431’s required bias/current conditions and use a suitably rated external device to reduce current or disconnect the source.
  6. Test the completed circuit. Measure at the battery terminals across expected current and temperature conditions; confirm the control does not chatter and behaves safely on input removal and faults.

Choose a circuit arrangement that matches the job

Switching a transistor or MOSFET in the charging path

The TL431 senses voltage and drives a transistor or MOSFET that reduces or interrupts charging current. This can be simple and adjustable, but the pass element must handle the maximum current and its worst-case power dissipation. A high-side arrangement may need a P-channel MOSFET or a suitable driver. A series switch also does not automatically block reverse current, and a voltage-only switch does not implement CC/CV charging.

Controlling a regulated charger’s feedback loop

In a regulated supply, the TL431 can control an optocoupler or feedback node so the converter regulates its output. This keeps high current in the power converter, but the feedback loop needs proper compensation. Startup behavior, isolation, minimum load, capacitance, and fault response matter; adding capacitance or changing the optocoupler can destabilize the loop. Consult the TL431 datasheet stability guidance and validate the complete converter.

A voltage-regulated output still needs a controlled current limit appropriate to the battery. Voltage feedback alone is not a complete charging system.

Providing a backup overvoltage disconnect

A separate TL431 detector can serve as a second shutdown path while a dedicated charger handles normal charging. This can add protection without asking the TL431 to manage the charge profile. The cutoff element must interrupt the maximum fault current, and the normal regulation and backup protection should not share a single failure point that defeats both. For lithium packs, a qualified battery-management/protection design may be more appropriate than a discrete detector alone.

Why hysteresis prevents cutoff chatter

Near a single threshold, the battery voltage and circuit noise can make the control switch repeatedly: charging stops, voltage relaxes, charging resumes, and voltage rises again. Rapid cycling can stress a relay, heat a MOSFET, add electrical noise, or upset a feedback loop.

Positive feedback can give the circuit two thresholds: an upper voltage at which charging is stopped and a lower voltage at which it is allowed again. Choose the gap for the battery, charger, load, and switching element; there is no universal hysteresis value. A protection disconnect may use a distinct reset condition, whereas a lead-acid float regulator may need different behavior. Validate both trip and reset points under real operating conditions.

For lithium-ion, a voltage cutoff is not a charger

Typical single-cell lithium-ion charging uses constant current followed by constant voltage (CC/CV). The charger first applies controlled current, transitions to the cell’s specified final voltage, and holds that voltage while current tapers; it terminates when the current or other charger-specific condition reaches its prescribed limit. Some chargers also qualify and precharge a deeply discharged cell, monitor temperature, enforce a safety timer, and manage recharge. TI explains the CC/CV charging process.

4.2 V is used by the referenced single-cell charger examples, but it is not a universal value for every lithium-based cell. Follow the cell manufacturer’s specified charge voltage and current. Simply opening a switch when a cell reaches a voltage does not supply controlled current, taper-current termination, temperature qualification, or safe recovery from an over-discharged cell.

Use a TL431 as part of a properly designed charger or as secondary overvoltage protection—not as the only lithium-ion charging-control device. For example, TI’s BQ2057C combines conditioning, CC/CV charging, temperature monitoring, termination, and automatic recharge. ST’s STC4054 is a single-cell example with fixed 4.2 V regulation, programmable charge current, thermal regulation, precharge, automatic recharge, and approximately C/10 termination. These are examples, not substitutes for checking compatibility with the specific cell and application.

Lead-acid, nickel-based, and multi-cell batteries need different treatment

Lead-acid

A TL431 can regulate a lead-acid charger’s absorption or float voltage, or provide overvoltage detection. There is no universal setting: follow the battery manufacturer’s specifications for flooded, AGM, or gel construction, cell count, temperature, charge current, and cyclic versus float use. A 12 V battery may use absorption settings in the mid-14 V range and float in the low-to-mid-13 V range, but those are broad examples, not settings to copy without the battery data sheet. Appropriate current limiting and temperature compensation may also be required.

NiMH and NiCd

A single fixed voltage cutoff is generally not adequate for nickel-metal hydride or nickel-cadmium charging. Their termination commonly depends on charging current, time, temperature, and voltage behavior. Use a charger designed for the chemistry rather than applying a lithium-ion threshold.

Series lithium packs

A divider across an N-cell series pack can detect a total pack voltage, but total voltage does not reveal each cell’s voltage. One cell can exceed its limit while the sum still appears acceptable. A series lithium pack needs appropriate individual-cell monitoring, balancing, overvoltage and undervoltage protection, overcurrent and short-circuit protection, temperature monitoring, and a compatible charger. A TL431-based shunt may serve a particular monitoring or balancing function, but it is not automatically a complete BMS and can dissipate substantial power while shunting.

Power, sensing, and fault details that affect safety

Current limit and heat

A voltage detector cannot prevent excessive charge current by itself. Use a current-limited source or charger controller, and rate the power transistor or MOSFET for current, voltage, safe operating area, and thermal conditions. For a linear pass element, a first estimate is:

PPASS ≈ (VIN − VBAT) × ICHARGE

For example, dropping 12 V to 4.2 V at 0.5 A dissipates about 3.9 W in the pass element before other losses. That is substantial heat for a small uncooled transistor. Check heatsinking or PCB copper, short-circuit behavior, and what happens if the control element fails open or short; a fuse or resettable protection may be appropriate.

Sense at the battery terminals

If wiring resistance is material, sense the battery terminals rather than only the charger output. Otherwise, cable drop can make the charger and battery see different voltages: the circuit may stop while the battery is below the target, or compensate in a way that lets the battery exceed it. Use separate sense conductors where practical and verify the terminal voltage with suitable test equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reverse current and failure response

When input power is removed or the charger is switched off, the battery may still feed the charger IC, regulator, pass-device body diode, divider, or indicator circuit. Depending on the design, use a blocking diode, back-to-back MOSFETs, a load switch, or an ideal-diode controller, or select a charger with specified reverse-current behavior. Check battery drain with input power absent.

Also test what happens if the battery is removed, the divider opens or shorts, the TL431 loses cathode current, or the switching device fails. A single control component should not be assumed to fail safely. Verify the exact package pinout: TL431 pin arrangements can vary by package and manufacturer.

When to use a TL431 and when to choose a charger IC

Need Suitable approach Why
Adjustable voltage monitor, regulator, or secondary overvoltage detector TL431 with a designed external control stage Useful when the charge algorithm and current control are handled elsewhere.
Single-cell lithium-ion charging Dedicated charger IC, such as the cited BQ2057C or STC4054, if suitable for the cell and design Charger functions can include CC/CV, precharge, termination, temperature handling, and recharge.
Higher-efficiency charging where a linear pass stage would run hot Appropriately selected switching charger/controller A switching topology can reduce pass-element dissipation, with added components and layout requirements.
Multi-cell lithium pack Charger and cell-level BMS/protection designed for the pack Pack voltage sensing alone cannot detect an individual cell overvoltage.

TI’s charger IC portfolio covers multiple charging topologies and chemistries. Choose by cell chemistry, cell count, input range, charge current, thermal conditions, protection needs, and the battery maker’s charging specification—not simply by nominal voltage.
