There are two different ways to use a soundboard in VRChat: route its clips through your PC’s audio devices, or add triggered sound effects to an avatar. Choose the first if you want to play clips without editing an avatar; choose the second if sounds should come from the avatar and behave as spatial effects. The setup and troubleshooting are different.
Choose the soundboard setup that matches your goal

VRChat does not require a particular paid app, physical soundpad, or hardware device for either approach. An anecdotal community discussion mentions software, but that is not evidence of official support or current compatibility.
Route PC soundboard audio into VRChat
For a PC soundboard, the key is the audio path: the soundboard must send audio to the device or route that VRChat is using. VRChat’s audio troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the app’s volume and device settings alongside the operating system’s routing.
- Check the intended path. Decide whether the soundboard should be heard as microphone input or sent through another audio route. The exact configuration depends on the soundboard and routing software; no app-specific recipe is established here.
- Check VRChat’s Sound settings. Confirm the relevant volume sliders and selected input or output device. A soundboard may be working while VRChat listens to or plays audio through a different device.
- Check Windows routing. Confirm that system audio works, then check the Windows Volume Mixer and default device so VRChat is assigned to the intended route.
- Check the headset connection. For SteamVR, review audio mirroring and the active headset audio device. If connecting the PC to a headset wirelessly, check the streaming software’s audio settings as well.
- Investigate conflicts. Update device drivers if needed. If VRChat cannot access an audio device, audio drivers or production software may be interfering; temporarily testing without those programs can help isolate the cause.
For Quest, Pico, or Vive XR Elite, VRChat’s guidance also calls out the app’s volume controls, system sound, and headphone charge and connection. A failure at any point in the chain can make clips inaudible even when the soundboard itself plays them correctly.

Add sound effects to an avatar
Avatar audio is configured by the avatar creator, rather than routed like an ordinary PC soundboard. VRChat’s VRC Spatial Audio Source documentation describes the component and its runtime constraints.
- In Unity, check that the avatar’s Audio Source has a
VRC_SpatialAudioSourcecomponent. If it is missing, the SDK may add one with default settings. - Configure the sound as a spatial avatar effect and test how it falls off with distance. VRChat enforces the documented maximum far distance and gain at runtime.
- Leave volumetric radius at zero unless you understand its behavior. A world with a shorter audio-distance limit can also affect a custom falloff curve.
- Test the sound at a sensible level and at different distances before using it in public instances.
VRChat’s VRC Spatial Audio Source documentation and Player Audio documentation distinguish avatar audio from voice. The Player Audio page, last updated 2025-04-04, lists default far distances of 25 meters for voice and 40 meters for avatar audio. It also lists a maximum avatar audio gain of 10 dB; VRChat’s VRC Spatial Audio Source documentation, last updated 2024-12-10, gives the same avatar gain cap. Platform documentation may change with updates.

Prepare clips to avoid harsh or uneven output
VRChat applies a compressor to avatar audio to limit maliciously loud output. The creator documentation advises using relatively dry audio, leaving headroom, and avoiding abrupt high peaks; heavy reverb or delay can contribute to audible compressor pumping. It suggests normalizing in Audacity or another wave editor between -6 and -12 dB. Treat that range as creator guidance, not a requirement that every clip be processed identically.

VRChat’s Safety and Trust System handles microphone voice and avatar sound effects as separate controls. A listener may hear your voice but not your avatar audio, or the reverse, depending on their Safety settings and trust-rank configuration. Users can also hide an avatar or mute an individual’s voice.

That distinction helps narrow down a problem: if only avatar effects are missing, check listener controls and avatar audio configuration; if only voice is missing, check voice controls and the microphone path. A soundboard routed through the PC is a separate path again, so confirm which kind of audio is failing before changing settings.

VRChat’s Community Guidelines, updated 2025-09-24, say: “Don’t do things that will hurt or harm other people. Don’t act in ways that would upset people, cause them trouble, or disturb them.” They do not set out a soundboard-specific rule, but the general guidance supports keeping clips at reasonable levels, avoiding disruptive repetition, and respecting the people and context in an instance. Use private or consenting spaces for sensitive material.
