You can activate a Roku TV without being charged: Roku says account creation and activation are free, and charges apply only if you choose to buy or subscribe. However, Roku says a payment method may be requested during activation; its support guidance does not guarantee that every signup flow offers a way to skip that step.
Set up your Roku TV and check the activation choices
- Connect the TV to power, turn it on, and follow the setup prompts to connect to Wi-Fi. Have your network name and password ready. Roku’s setup guide says you will then sign in to an existing Roku account or create a free one: Roku TV setup.
- If the activation screen asks for payment information, read the options currently shown. If it offers a way to continue without adding a method, choose that option. Roku says a payment method may be requested, but does not say that a skip option is available in every activation flow. See Roku’s activation guidance.
- If the screen requires payment details and will not let you continue, use only a payment option Roku displays for your region or contact Roku Support. Do not assume that a workaround or a particular payment option will be available to every account.
Why Roku asks for a payment method
Roku’s account-creation instructions describe adding a payment method to enable faster trials, subscriptions, and purchases. Its activation guidance is more qualified: a method may be requested, and you are charged only if you later choose to buy something. The two statements do not establish that a card is universally required—or that every signup can be completed without payment information. Roku says creating an account and activating a device are free: Roku account creation and device activation.
What can count as a payment method?
For U.S. customers, Roku lists credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, PayPal, Cash App Pay, and eligible prepaid gift cards. Availability varies by region, and the list is not a promise that every option will appear for every customer. Check Roku’s payment method information for the options applicable to your location. Using a non-card option may still mean adding a payment method to the account; it is not the same as activating with no payment details.

Remove a payment method already saved to your account
- First cancel or turn off auto-renew for any active subscription billed through Roku. Roku requires this before removing the payment method.
- Go to my.roku.com and manage the payment method there. Roku says removal is done on its website; its instructions also describe adding or updating payment details on the website or device. See Roku’s payment-management instructions.
If a streaming subscription bills you directly rather than through Roku, manage its billing with that provider. Roku’s removal prerequisite applies to active subscriptions billed through Roku.

Set a PIN to prevent accidental Roku purchases
A PIN does not remove saved payment information or block every possible charge. It can add an authorization step for on-device Roku purchases and subscriptions, as well as app additions. Roku describes this as an optional, four-digit PIN for Roku streaming devices; it is not a universal control for activity on Roku’s website, mobile app, or a streaming service’s own billing system.
