To reduce the chance of irritation, apply a hair-growth product only as its own directions specify. If it is topical minoxidil, part your hair, apply the labeled amount to the target scalp area—not across the hair—and use it at the labeled frequency. Stop minoxidil and contact a dermatologist if your scalp becomes dry, scaly, itchy, or red. These instructions do not automatically apply to cosmetic serums with different ingredients.
First, check what kind of serum you have
“Hair-growth serum” can mean a medication or a cosmetic product. The guidance below is specifically for topical minoxidil, a medication with product-specific directions and warnings. For a cosmetic serum, follow its own package directions and ingredient warnings; the evidence cited here does not establish an irritation-free method for every formula.
Before using minoxidil, check that the product is intended for you and the hair-loss pattern being treated. Do not self-treat sudden or patchy hair loss, hair loss with an unknown cause, or a scalp that is red, inflamed, infected, irritated, or painful. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that hair loss has multiple causes and may need different treatment; some over-the-counter labels explicitly warn against use in these circumstances. How to apply topical minoxidil
- Read the exact product label. Concentration, intended user, dose, frequency, and warnings can differ. Do not use one product’s directions for another.
- Start with a dry scalp. If you have shampooed, the AAD advises applying minoxidil to a dry scalp. The cited women’s 5% foam label says to towel-dry until the scalp skin is dry.
- Part your hair to expose the target area. Apply the product to the scalp itself, not merely onto the hair. Use only the amount specified on that product’s label.
- Use only the labeled frequency. For example, the cited DailyMed women’s 5% aerosol foam label directs use once daily, while a cited men’s 5% solution label directs 1 mL twice daily. These are examples for different products and users, not interchangeable dosing advice. More product or more frequent use is not a way to improve results; the cited solution label says extra amount or frequency will not improve results.
- Wash your hands after application. Avoid spreading the medication to your face or other body areas. The cited foam label tells users to wash hands and surfaces; the AAD advises applying minoxidil only to the scalp and washing the face after use to limit unwanted facial hair.

What to do if your scalp gets irritated
Minoxidil-related irritation can include dryness, scaling, itching, or redness. If these symptoms occur, stop using minoxidil and see a dermatologist, as the AAD advises. Do not try to push through the irritation or add other active products over the affected area.

Some minoxidil labels also warn users to stop and seek medical advice for symptoms such as chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet. When to get a diagnosis before treating hair loss
Arrange clinical advice before starting minoxidil if the loss is sudden or patchy, you do not know its cause, or your scalp is visibly irritated or inflamed. Different causes can resemble one another and require different treatment. The AAD also advises women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding to avoid minoxidil; this caution is specific to minoxidil, not a blanket rule for every cosmetic serum. What to expect from minoxidil
Minoxidil results commonly take about six to twelve months, according to the AAD’s page last updated December 13, 2022. The benefit depends on continued use; stopping treatment means losing it. The AAD’s 2022 female-pattern hair-loss guidance also notes that temporary increased shedding can occur during the first two to eight weeks.
