If your Galaxy phone is misplaced, use the paired Galaxy Watch: open the watch’s Apps tray, tap Find, choose Devices, select your phone, and tap Ring. Samsung says the phone rings at its loudest volume. When you locate it, swipe the X control on the watch to stop the alert.

That procedure is immediate when the watch and phone are connected by Bluetooth and within Bluetooth range. A watch can also work remotely over LTE or another internet connection, but Samsung requires a strong internet connection on both devices. Pair and test everything before leaving home; travel alone does not make a disconnected watch able to find a phone.

What you need before you leave

The Find action is designed for a Galaxy Watch that is already paired with the Galaxy phone. Complete these checks while both devices are in your possession:

  • Pairing: Confirm the watch appears as connected to the phone, rather than merely having been paired in the past.
  • Power: Keep both devices switched on. A powered-off watch or phone cannot complete the documented connection.
  • Samsung account and finding settings: Verify the account and device-finding options used by Samsung’s SmartThings Find service. Some finding features must be enabled before the device is lost; enabling them afterward may not restore those options.
  • Connectivity: Test the connection you expect to use on the trip. Bluetooth is for a nearby phone. Remote use requires usable internet on both the watch and phone.
  • Software and regional variant: Samsung’s Australian guide applies to Australian-variant devices, and Samsung notes that menus and availability can differ by model, software version, country, and purchase region.

Samsung Australia describes the feature this way: “If you have a Samsung Watch paired to your smartphone you can easily use the pre-installed Find my Phone application.” The application name and screen sequence can vary on another watch generation or regional software build, so use the labels shown on your watch.

Ring a nearby phone from the watch

Use this path when you think the phone is in your hotel room, rental car, airport lounge, campsite, or another nearby place.

  1. On the Galaxy Watch, open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Find.
  3. Tap Devices.
  4. Choose the paired Galaxy phone from the device list.
  5. Tap Ring.
  6. Follow the sound to the phone. Samsung says the phone rings at its loudest volume.
  7. After you find it, swipe on the X button on the watch to stop the ring.

The watch’s ring command is not a promise that the phone is somewhere in the same building. It works over the connection available at that moment. With Bluetooth, Samsung requires the watch and phone to be within Bluetooth range. The support instructions do not publish a dependable distance number, and walls, vehicles, crowds, and radio interference can change what “within range” means.

Understand the two connection paths

Before assuming the watch can locate a phone left elsewhere, identify how the devices are connected. The practical difference is whether the watch is talking directly to the phone or reaching it through the internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Connection path Where the devices can be Required connection What to expect
Bluetooth nearby Within Bluetooth range of one another An active Bluetooth connection between the paired watch and phone The watch can send the Ring command directly; Samsung does not specify a fixed distance.
Remote LTE or internet Not necessarily physically nearby A strong internet connection on both the watch and phone The command depends on each device reaching the service. Weak, blocked, or missing connectivity can prevent the action.

A cellular watch does not automatically make every Find command remote. LTE must actually be available to the watch, and the phone must also be reachable through a strong internet connection. Conversely, a phone and watch in the same room can still fail if Bluetooth is disconnected and neither device has the internet path required for remote operation.

Using the feature when you are away from the phone

Remote finding is useful when the phone may be in another part of a resort, at a railway station, or left in a different building. It is conditional, not guaranteed.

  1. Make sure the watch itself has a working LTE or Wi-Fi internet connection, according to the connection your model and plan support.
  2. Make sure the phone has a strong internet connection. A watch cannot compensate for a phone that is offline, powered down, or otherwise unreachable.
  3. Open Apps tray > Find > Devices on the watch.
  4. Select the paired Galaxy phone and tap Ring.
  5. If the phone responds, stop the alert from the watch by swiping the X control after you recover it.

If the watch shows no usable device or the command does not complete, treat that as a connectivity or setup problem rather than evidence that the phone is not nearby. Recheck the Samsung account, device-finding settings, and each device’s network state before trying again.

What to expect in common travel situations

The two connection paths answer different questions. Bluetooth is the path to try when you have a plausible nearby search area, such as a hotel room or the seats around you. It does not require the devices to reach the internet for the direct nearby connection, but it does require them to be within Bluetooth range. If the watch and phone are separated beyond that range, repeatedly tapping Ring will not extend Bluetooth’s reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote LTE or internet is the path to try when the phone may be elsewhere. It avoids the requirement that the devices be physically near one another, but replaces that requirement with a strong internet connection on both devices. A watch showing cellular service is not, by itself, proof that the phone is reachable. Nor does having internet on the watch solve a phone-side connection problem. These are separate prerequisites.

For example, if you leave a phone somewhere in the same hotel, start with the watch’s Find app and Ring command. If the devices are not within Bluetooth range, remote operation is only an option if the watch and phone each have the required internet connection and the account and finding settings are in place. In a crowded station, even a successful ring may be hard to hear; the loudest-volume setting does not guarantee that you will hear it over surrounding noise. The feature helps trigger an alert, not identify an exact room, seat, or location by sound.

There is no published distance figure in Samsung’s cited guide that can tell you how many metres away the watch will still connect. Avoid treating a range estimate from another device or environment as a promise for your travel setup. The practical test is whether the paired devices establish the relevant connection where you are using them.

Troubleshoot a failed Ring command

The phone does not appear under Devices

  • Confirm that this is the watch paired with the phone you are trying to find. A watch can only use the paired-device relationship described by Samsung’s guide.
  • Check that the phone is switched on and that the watch is also operating normally.
  • Review the account and device-finding configuration used by SmartThings Find. If the relevant finding option was never enabled, Samsung says some options may be unavailable after the loss.
  • Check for model, software, and regional differences. Samsung’s menus are not identical across every Galaxy Watch and phone variant.

The watch and phone are probably nearby, but nothing happens

  • Move closer and retry. Bluetooth operation requires the devices to be within Bluetooth range, and Samsung does not provide a universal meter or feet figure.
  • Look for a Bluetooth connection indicator on the watch or phone. If Bluetooth has dropped, the watch may no longer be able to issue the nearby command.
  • Consider obstacles and radio conditions in the travel environment, such as a vehicle, thick walls, or a crowded terminal. These can change practical Bluetooth reach without changing the documented requirement.

The watch is using LTE or Wi-Fi, but remote finding fails

  • Verify that the watch has a strong internet connection rather than simply showing cellular service.
  • Verify that the phone also has a strong internet connection. Samsung’s remote-use instruction requires both devices to be online.
  • If either device has just moved between networks, wait for it to establish a usable connection and try the command again.
  • Do not infer that a failed remote command gives the phone’s location. It may indicate that one device is offline or that a required finding setting was not enabled in advance.

The watch rings but you cannot hear the phone

Samsung says the Ring action uses the phone’s loudest volume, but sound can still be difficult to hear in an airport, station, street, or hotel. Search likely surfaces and quiet the surroundings if possible. If you eventually locate the phone, use the watch’s X control to stop the alert rather than waiting for it to end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Airplane mode and other travel settings

Samsung’s support pages do not state a universal airplane-mode rule for this watch-to-phone action. The outcome depends on which radios remain enabled and whether a Bluetooth or internet connection is still available.

  • If airplane mode disables the Bluetooth link, the nearby path cannot work until an allowed Bluetooth connection is restored.
  • If the watch and phone cannot reach the internet, the remote LTE/internet path cannot work.
  • Some devices let you re-enable individual radios while airplane mode is on; do not assume that behavior is identical across models or software versions.

For a flight or train journey, check the connection state after changing airplane-mode settings instead of relying on the fact that the devices were paired earlier. Pairing is a prior setup step, not a guarantee that Bluetooth or internet remains active after you change a travel setting.

If the phone may be stolen or is moving

Finding a misplaced phone is different from confronting a theft. Samsung advises against going directly to the mapped location of a stolen phone; contact local authorities instead. Do not put yourself at risk to recover a device.

If the phone may have been left on a moving bus or train, Samsung says the Track location feature can send updates every 15 minutes. That is a tracking function, not the same as the watch’s immediate Ring command. Use the account-based finding tools that were enabled before the loss, and share location information with authorities or transport staff rather than pursuing a moving vehicle yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters when the phone is not simply hidden nearby. Ring is useful when an audible alert can help you recover a phone; it is not a substitute for a location service, and a failed ring does not prove that the phone has been stolen or is outside a particular radius. If you need location updates, use the applicable finding tools and the settings available for your device, rather than interpreting the watch’s Ring response as a location report.

Regional and software differences

The direct Ring sequence comes from Samsung Australia’s support guide, last updated August 20, 2026, and that guide is scoped to Australian-variant devices. Samsung’s broader documentation also says connected-watch requirements and menus vary with device and software version. A Galaxy Watch purchased in another country may show a different app name, menu order, or feature set.

When your screen does not match Apps tray > Find > Devices > phone > Ring, check Samsung support for the exact watch and phone variants sold in your country. Do not assume that a missing menu means the hardware is defective; it may reflect software, account, region, or availability differences. Samsung Canada also notes that device and software variation can affect finding features, and some options need to have been enabled before a device is lost.

Do you need to buy anything?

This is a how-to for people who already have a compatible, paired Galaxy Watch and Galaxy phone. The instructions do not require buying a new watch or phone, and Samsung’s guide does not make a specific model recommendation. The relevant question is whether your existing devices support the Find options shown for your model and region, and whether you have the necessary setup and connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available guidance does not specify a price, subscription cost, or a universal LTE plan requirement for this particular action. Remote operation does require a strong internet connection on both devices; how a particular watch gets that connection depends on its configuration. Check your own model and service details rather than assuming that a cellular watch plan is required or included.

A travel-day checklist

  • Pair the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy phone before departure.
  • Open Find and confirm the phone appears in Devices.
  • Run a short Ring test while the phone is beside you, then stop it with the watch’s X control.
  • Confirm both devices are powered on and signed into the intended Samsung account.
  • Review SmartThings Find and device-finding settings before the phone is lost.
  • Decide whether your likely recovery scenario is Bluetooth nearby or remote internet, and test that connection.
  • After changing airplane-mode or network settings, check connectivity again.
  • If theft is possible, avoid the mapped location and contact authorities.

What the Galaxy Watch can—and cannot—do

The watch is a convenient trigger for ringing a paired Galaxy phone. Nearby operation depends on Bluetooth range; remote operation depends on strong internet connections for both devices. The feature does not supply a guaranteed distance, a guaranteed response in every travel environment, or a substitute for advance setup. Pairing, account configuration, device-finding settings, network access, and regional software all determine whether the command is available when you need it.

Think of it as one recovery tool for a specific situation: you know or suspect where the phone is, and a ring can help you find it. For a phone left farther away, offline, or possibly stolen, the watch’s Ring button has limits. Prepare the devices in advance, understand which connection path you are relying on, and use Samsung’s other finding options or local authorities when the situation calls for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my Galaxy Watch to find my phone if it is in another building?

Possibly. Bluetooth requires the watch and phone to be within Bluetooth range. If they are not near each other, remote use requires a strong internet connection on both devices, along with the account and finding settings being configured. It is not guaranteed simply because the phone is elsewhere.

Does the watch show where my phone is?

The watch’s Ring command is for triggering an alert; it is not itself a location report. Samsung says Track location can send updates every 15 minutes when a phone may have been left on a moving bus or train. Use applicable finding tools for location information.

Will Find work if my phone is in airplane mode?

Samsung does not state a universal airplane-mode rule for this action. It depends on whether Bluetooth or internet connections remain enabled and usable on the devices. Check connectivity after changing airplane-mode settings.

Do I need to buy a new Galaxy Watch or pay for LTE to use Find?

The instructions are for an already-paired compatible Galaxy Watch and phone and do not require buying a new device. Samsung’s cited guidance does not specify a price or universal LTE-plan requirement; remote use requires a strong internet connection on both devices.

The Bottom Line

To ring a paired Galaxy phone, open Apps tray > Find > Devices on the watch, select the phone, and tap Ring. Bluetooth requires the devices to be within range; remote use requires strong internet on both. Set up and check the account and finding options before traveling, and contact authorities rather than approaching a mapped location if theft is possible.
