Yes—the Lenovo Chromebook Duet can use an external monitor as an extended desktop while keeping its built-in screen active, provided your model and video connection support it. For a Full HD monitor, connect over USB-C video, then open Settings > Device > Displays in ChromeOS to arrange the screens and select 1920×1080 when available.
Check which Duet model you have
Lenovo’s specifications vary by model, so identify yours before choosing a dock or expecting a particular refresh rate. Check Settings > About ChromeOS or the device label. Lenovo’s published limits are:

These are maximum specifications, not a promise that every adapter, cable, dock, and monitor combination will deliver the same mode. For Full HD, 1920×1080 is below the published ceilings for the newer models; the original Duet’s cited datasheet confirms external-display output but does not establish its maximum mode.
Choose the right connection
The Duet sends video over USB-C using DisplayPort. Lenovo describes the USB-C connectors on the 2024 Duet as supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode, and says they can connect to an external display or projector. The monitor’s input determines the cable or adapter you need.

- USB-C monitor: Use a full-featured USB-C-to-USB-C cable that supports video, not a charge-only cable. Lenovo notes that the cable is not supplied.
- HDMI monitor: Use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable that explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode video conversion.
- DisplayPort monitor: Use a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter rated for DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- Several peripherals: A powered USB-C hub or dock can add ports. Check ChromeOS compatibility, charging support, and that its display bandwidth is sufficient for the resolution and refresh rate you want.
Lenovo warns that converters and adapters can lower actual output resolution. Check the specifications of every part of the signal path—including the Duet, adapter or dock, cable, and monitor—rather than relying on a connector shape alone.
Connect the monitor and extend the desktop
- Connect the appropriate video cable or adapter to a Duet USB-C port and the monitor. If the monitor does not accept USB-C video, an adapter may be required.
- Connect the monitor to mains power and turn it on. If it has multiple inputs, select the one used by the cable.
- In ChromeOS, click the system tray, open Settings, then select Device > Displays.
- If ChromeOS offers a mirror-or-extend choice, select Extended display. Drag the display rectangles to match the physical left-right placement of the screens.
- Select the external monitor in display settings and choose 1920×1080 and the desired refresh rate if those options are offered.
With an extended desktop, the two screens form one workspace rather than showing the same image. Keep email, chat, or reference material on the Duet and place a document, spreadsheet, or browser workspace on the Full HD monitor. Move windows between screens with the trackpad or keyboard shortcuts.

Set a useful Full HD workspace
A native 1920×1080 mode at 60 Hz is a practical target when both the monitor and the full connection path offer it. A 60 Hz mode can make pointer movement and scrolling feel smoother, but Lenovo’s model ceilings do not guarantee 60 Hz through every adapter or dock.

- Power and ports: A USB-C monitor or powered dock may reduce cable clutter. A basic HDMI adapter may leave charging to a second USB-C connection, if the model and accessories allow it.
- Ergonomics: Choose enough USB ports for a keyboard, mouse, or storage, and position the monitor at a comfortable height with its stand or a VESA mount.
- Compatibility: Verify DisplayPort Alt Mode, ChromeOS support, any HDCP requirement for protected video, and the seller’s return policy before buying.
Fix common display problems
The monitor shows no picture
- Confirm the monitor is on and set to the correct input; reseat the cable at both ends.
- Try the Duet’s other USB-C port.
- Test with a cable known to carry video. A USB-C cable that only charges or transfers data will not provide a display signal.
An HDMI screen stays blank
Check that the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable supports conversion from DisplayPort Alt Mode. A charge-and-data-only USB-C adapter cannot create a video signal.

The available resolution is lower than expected
Remove the hub or dock and test with a direct compatible adapter or cable. Check whether the monitor or dock is limiting the signal; adapters and converters can reduce the actual output resolution.
ChromeOS only shows a mirrored screen
Open Settings > Device > Displays and look for the extended-display arrangement. Confirm the exact Duet model supports an external display; the newer models listed above support one external monitor alongside the built-in screen.

A dock connects but behaves unreliably
Where supported, connect the Duet’s charger through a powered dock. Check that the dock has enough display bandwidth for the selected mode, then update ChromeOS and test again.
