On a supported Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, partially fold the phone, set it on a stable, flat surface, compose your shot, and trigger the camera with a timer, palm gesture, or enabled voice command. You don’t need a separate tripod for this basic setup. The exact controls vary by model, and Samsung’s “FlexCam” cover-screen workflow is different from using the camera in the main-screen Flex Mode layout.
Set up your phone for hands-free capture
- Check your model’s camera workflow. On a supported Galaxy Z Flip, open Camera or FlexCam as described in Samsung’s guide for your model. Samsung’s instructions for the Galaxy Z Flip8 and Galaxy Z Flip6 describe cover-screen FlexCam. On the Flip5, Samsung documents a main-screen Flex Mode camera layout instead.
- Partially fold the phone and set it down. Use a stable, flat surface so the phone can support itself. Position it so the camera view is clear and the phone is not at risk of slipping or being knocked over.
- Compose the frame. Check the viewfinder and adjust the phone’s angle and position before stepping into the shot. If your model offers a preview on the cover screen, use it to check the composition.
How to take a hands-free photo
Once the phone is steady and the composition is set, use a capture method available on your model. Samsung’s Flip8 guidance describes raising your palm toward the camera to start a countdown; voice commands can also be used if enabled. The Flip6 guide documents palm activation and voice commands as well.
Enable the palm gesture on supported Flip models
If showing your palm does not start the countdown, check the camera setting. On the Flip8, Samsung’s documented path is Camera > Settings > Shooting methods > Show palm; turn the option on if it is off. Labels and menus can differ by model or software version, so consult the matching Flip8 or Flip6 instructions rather than assuming every Samsung foldable uses the same path.

A camera timer is a straightforward alternative when you want a delay before capture. Voice commands are another option on the Flip8 and Flip6 when enabled. Available commands and settings depend on the model; Samsung’s model guides explain the controls documented for each device.

Check framing aids for group photos
On the Flip8, Samsung documents Dual Preview, which lets the subject see how they look, and Auto Zoom, which can help maintain framing as people move. The Flip6 guide also documents Auto Zoom and notes that its range differs from standard zoom. These are model-specific features, not standard controls on every foldable.
How to record hands-free video
Video controls and tracking features depend on the phone. On the Galaxy Z Flip6, Samsung’s documented workflow is to choose Video in FlexCam, set the phone on a flat surface, open Quick controls, and enable Auto Framing. The guide says to show your palm to begin recording; the camera follows the first person and adjusts if another person enters the frame. See Samsung’s Flip6 camera instructions for the model-specific steps.

What the Flex mode panel does—and does not do
Samsung’s guide for the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 describes enabling the Flex mode panel through Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel, then using it with the phone folded halfway on a solid surface. The panel is an interface and control aid; it is not the same thing as the Flip’s cover-screen FlexCam. See Samsung’s Flex mode panel instructions for those models.

If hands-free capture is not working
- The phone will not stay at the angle you want: Move it to a stable, flat surface and adjust the fold angle before composing. Do not rely on an uneven or slippery spot.
- The palm gesture does nothing: Check whether Show palm is enabled in the camera’s shooting-method settings, and confirm that your model supports the feature.
- The camera does not track or reframe people: Verify that the relevant feature is available and enabled for your exact model and mode. Auto Zoom and Auto Framing are not universal foldable-camera features.
- You cannot find the described screen or controls: You may be following instructions for another Flip generation or confusing cover-screen FlexCam with the main-screen Flex Mode panel. Samsung’s Fold6 and Flip6 panel guide and Fold camera guide document distinct model-specific interfaces.
