ChatGPT can help you review bills and build a practical savings plan, but it cannot cancel subscriptions or guarantee that you will save money. The useful prompts below ask it to work from your actual costs, rank possible changes, and show the trade-offs so you can check each suggestion before acting.
How to get useful expense-cutting suggestions
Start with accurate figures from recent statements, plus the dates those amounts cover. Tell ChatGPT what you want to protect—for example, a maximum time commitment, essential services, or a minimum grocery budget—and ask it to distinguish estimates from facts. Do not treat a suggested saving as real until you have checked the provider’s current price, renewal date, and terms.
Use the prompts as starting points: replace the bracketed descriptions with your own information, and ask follow-up questions when an answer makes assumptions. Avoid sharing account passwords or information you do not need to provide. If you connect financial accounts through ChatGPT’s documented finance feature, OpenAI says eligible users in the United States can ask about spending, bills, subscriptions, budgets, and savings goals; the documentation describes Plaid for financial accounts and a separate Experian connection for credit data. Availability and feature details can change. OpenAI’s finance documentation explains the feature.

1. Find subscriptions to cancel, change, or renegotiate
Prompt: “Here are my recurring subscriptions, their monthly or annual costs, renewal dates, and how often I use them: [list]. Find realistic options to cancel, downgrade, switch, share where permitted, negotiate, or pay less frequently. Estimate the monthly and annual difference for each option, rank changes that would have the least effect on my quality of life, and flag anything I need to verify. Do not assume a plan or discount is available.”

2. Find the largest realistic spending reductions
Prompt: “Here are my monthly expenses, with the date range and whether each amount is fixed or variable: [list]. Identify ten realistic ways I could reduce spending. Rank them by estimated savings and separate easy changes from options that involve a noticeable trade-off. Show your assumptions and do not count the same saving twice.”

3. Build a 30-day savings challenge
Prompt: “Create a 30-day plan to save up to $500 from my current budget: [income, essential costs, flexible spending, and constraints]. Give me specific actions by week, estimate the amount each could save, and mark which estimates depend on my changing a habit or receiving a provider’s approval. If $500 is not realistic, show a more realistic target.”
The $500 is a goal in the prompt, not a typical or demonstrated outcome. Having ChatGPT test whether the target fits your budget helps prevent a motivational number from becoming an unrealistic plan.
4. Look for ways to lower the grocery bill
Prompt: “My grocery budget is [amount] for [time period], and this is my usual list or meal plan: [list]. Suggest lower-cost substitutions, meals using overlapping ingredients, suitable bulk purchases, and items I could skip without undermining my dietary needs. Estimate savings only where you have enough information, and tell me what prices I need to check locally.”

5. Find cheaper or free alternatives to routine spending
Prompt: “Here are routine expenses I want to review: [list, cost, and how I use each]. Suggest comparable lower-cost or free alternatives, including resources or memberships I already have, library services, used or refurbished options, and DIY where practical. Rank the choices by likely savings and convenience, and note what quality or access I would give up.”
Ask for alternatives that match your actual need. A free substitute is not a saving if it costs more in time, lacks an essential feature, or requires buying something else.

6. Challenge a nonessential purchase
Prompt: “I am considering buying [item or service] for [price]. Challenge whether I need it, calculate what that money could do toward [specific savings goal or debt], and suggest lower-cost alternatives or the benefit of waiting. Ask me for missing details instead of assuming.”
This prompt is useful for making the opportunity cost visible before a purchase. It cannot know how much you will value the item unless you explain the use and alternatives you have considered.
7. Set up a realistic monthly savings system
Prompt: “Here are my take-home income, fixed expenses, variable expenses, debt payments, current savings, and pay dates: [figures]. Help me design a realistic monthly system with a payday savings amount, spending limits, and categories to monitor. Preserve essential bills and minimum debt payments, show the assumptions, and give me a simpler fallback for months when expenses are higher.”

Check that the plan leaves enough available for bills due before your next payday and for irregular costs. If it does not, revise the numbers rather than relying on a savings target that could push necessary expenses onto debt.

In an article published September 13, 2026, Elton Jones of Tom’s Guide described reviewing six recurring costs: Patreon at $12, HBO Max at $18.49, Netflix at $21.76, Hulu & Disney+ at $76, Crunchyroll at $10.88, and Experian at $27.21. These are the author’s reported figures at that time, not current prices or a general price list.
Jones said he changed Netflix to an ad-supported tier, moved Crunchyroll from monthly to annual billing, and switched Experian to a free option. The reported combined monthly cost for those three items went from $59.85 to $18.12 monthly combined cost — Elton Jones, Tom’s Guide, 2026. Subtracting those figures gives a difference of $41.73 per month; that is arithmetic based on the author’s numbers, not a separately reported statistic. It is one person’s account, not evidence that other users will get the same result. Check current terms and prices before making a similar change.
Verify suggestions before changing a bill
AI output can be wrong, incomplete, or based on stale information. The CFPB’s June 2023 issue spotlight on chatbots in consumer finance says, “Chatbots may be useful for resolving basic inquiries, but their effectiveness wanes as problems become more complex.” That report is not an evaluation of the current ChatGPT product specifically. Use the answer to identify questions to check against original statements and provider terms, not as the final authority on a complex financial decision. Read the CFPB report.
- For each proposed subscription change, compare the actual monthly and annual cost, renewal date, cancellation terms, lost features or content, advertising or usage restrictions, and how easy it is to reverse.
- Before a cancellation, confirm the steps, deadline, and amount due. The FTC advises keeping a record of the cancellation request and any conversations, then checking statements after cancellation. Its guidance also warns: “Remember that some ads might be designed to make you click, not tell you the truth about the offer.” See the FTC’s subscription and trial guidance.
- If a utility bill may be unaffordable, contact the provider promptly and ask about payment arrangements or budget billing. Budget billing is based on estimated costs; ask how actual usage is reconciled, whether fees or credits apply, and what local protections may be available. Read the FTC’s utility-services guidance.
What ChatGPT can and cannot do with your finances
OpenAI says ChatGPT can help users understand and plan, but it cannot take financial actions such as paying bills, changing account settings, or opening or closing accounts. You remain responsible for decisions, and OpenAI advises consulting qualified professionals for legal, tax, or investment consequences. A prompt can help you prepare a call or compare options; you still need to contact the provider and complete any change yourself.
