Historically, Ubuntu documented direct upgrades to 16.04 LTS from Ubuntu 15.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, using different release-notification settings for each. But Xenial is no longer a supported destination: its standard support ended in April 2021, and Canonical’s ten-year lifecycle extension ended in April 2026. If you are managing a machine today, plan a migration to a currently supported Ubuntu release instead of treating 16.04 as a secure endpoint. The steps below explain the original upgrade routes for historical reference.
Which older Ubuntu versions could upgrade directly to 16.04?
The Xenial release notes and Ubuntu Community Help Wiki document Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) as direct source releases. The route depended on the source release:
| Source release | Historical upgrade setting or availability |
|---|---|
| Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) | The LTS-to-LTS upgrade offer was enabled with the Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS point release. On Desktop, set release notifications to long-term support versions; on Server, use lts as the prompt setting. |
| Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) | The release notes said users would be offered an automatic upgrade to 16.04. On Desktop, set release notifications to any new version; on Server, use normal as the prompt setting. |
These were the documented direct routes to Xenial. If your starting release is different, do not assume that jumping directly to 16.04 is supported; use the release-upgrade guidance for your starting and target releases.
What to check before an in-place upgrade
- Bring the installed Ubuntu release fully up to date before starting the release upgrade.
- Read the Ubuntu 16.04 release notes, including their known issues, before committing to Xenial.
- Make and verify backups, and make sure you have a way to recover the machine if the upgrade is interrupted or an application stops working.
- Review third-party software repositories and proprietary drivers. Their compatibility and upgrade behavior depend on the packages and hardware on your particular system.
- Arrange network access to an official Ubuntu mirror or a locally accessible mirror. The official Xenial notes say Desktop and Server had no offline upgrade option.
The release notes do not promise a universal completion time or success rate. Allow enough time to review prompts and resolve issues rather than relying on a fixed estimate.

- UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Ubuntu live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
Historical Desktop upgrade steps
The Desktop workflow used Software & Updates to select which releases the updater should offer, then launched Update Manager.
- Open System Settings and choose Software & Updates.
- Open the Updates tab. Set Notify me of a new Ubuntu version to For any new version if upgrading from 15.10, or to For long-term support versions if upgrading from 14.04 LTS.
- Launch
update-manager, for example by pressing Alt+F2 and enteringupdate-manager. - When Update Manager reports that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is available, select Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.
For the 14.04 LTS route, the 16.04.1 point-release timing is material: the original LTS-to-LTS offer was not enabled until that point release.

Historical Server upgrade steps
On Server, the release-upgrade tool was do-release-upgrade. The documented procedure used update-manager-core and a release-prompt setting that matched the source version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Install the core release-upgrade package if it is not already installed:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core. - Edit
/etc/update-manager/release-upgradesand setPrompt=normalfor Ubuntu 15.10 orPrompt=ltsfor Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. - Start the upgrade with
sudo do-release-upgrade, then follow the prompts.
The Server notes say the upgrade runs using GNU screen and can reattach if the connection drops. That helps with a disconnected session, but it does not replace a backup or recovery plan.

Can you upgrade Ubuntu to 16.04 offline?
No. The Ubuntu 16.04 release notes explicitly state: “There are no offline upgrade options for Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server.” The machine needs network connectivity to an official mirror or to a mirror it can reach locally; downloading packages elsewhere is not the documented offline upgrade method.

Ubuntu’s release index gives 16.04 LTS a release date of April 21, 2016, and records the end of standard support in April 2021. Canonical announced a ten-year lifecycle for Xenial, which ended in April 2026; Canonical states that it no longer releases updates after a release reaches end of life. As of September 2026, an existing Xenial installation therefore needs a planned migration rather than continued use as a supported system.

Do not assume that a much newer LTS can be reached in one step. Canonical’s ESM guidance gives the example of upgrading from 16.04 to 20.04 by going first to 18.04 and then to 20.04. That example describes the required sequence for that historical target; it is not a recommendation to stop at 20.04 or a guarantee that those releases are supported today. Check the current Ubuntu Server release-upgrade documentation and the release notes for each step in the path you choose.

In-place upgrade or clean installation?
An in-place upgrade attempts to carry the existing installation forward; a clean installation starts afresh. The Xenial documentation establishes the in-place routes above, but it does not establish which approach is better for every machine or whether a particular third-party package or driver will carry over correctly. Choose based on the system’s recovery options, application requirements, and the compatibility of its installed software—not on a universal promise of a smoother or faster result.
