To upgrade Proton VPN, sign in at account.protonvpn.com, choose Upgrade or Compare all plans on the Home page, select a paid plan and billing duration, then complete checkout. If you already have a paid plan, the timing and credit for unused time depend on whether you change plans or only change the billing period.
Upgrade from Proton VPN Free
- Sign in to account.protonvpn.com.
- On Home, select Upgrade or Compare all plans.
- Choose a paid plan and subscription duration, then select it.
- Choose a payment method shown at checkout, enter the requested details, and pay.
Review the plan, duration, currency, and total shown in your account before paying. There is no single price that applies to every account and region.
Switch from one paid plan to another
- Sign in at account.protonvpn.com.
- On Home, select Compare all plans. If you have a 12- or 24-month Proton Unlimited subscription, select Explore group plans instead.
- Select the plan and duration you want.
- Choose an available payment method, enter the requested payment details, and complete checkout.
When you switch to a different paid plan, the new subscription starts immediately. Proton converts unused time on the previous subscription into credits and deducts them from the new subscription cost. Switching entirely to Proton VPN Free by canceling is different: unused time does not generate credits.
Change the billing period on your current plan
- Sign in to your Proton account.
- Open Subscription → Edit billing cycle.
- Choose the new billing period and a payment method, enter the requested details, and pay.
Proton says the new billing period starts immediately. Remaining time from the previous cycle is converted into credits and deducted from the cost.

Know when the change takes effect
| Change | When it takes effect | What happens to unused time |
|---|---|---|
| Move to a different paid plan | Immediately | Converted to credits and deducted from the new subscription cost |
| Extend the term within the same plan, such as Plus monthly to Plus annual | At the end of the current plan | Proton’s upgrade guidance says the new term is queued; it does not describe this as a different-plan credit adjustment |
| Change billing period through Edit billing cycle | Immediately | Remaining time is converted to credits and deducted from the cost |
These distinctions matter: moving to another plan and editing the billing cycle are separate account actions, even if both change what you pay for next.
Payment methods, currency, and checkout
Proton lists payment cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bitcoin, and cash among its payment methods. What appears can depend on how and where you upgrade, so use the options presented in your account checkout. Some methods may not appear during initial account creation; Proton suggests creating a free account first, then choosing VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited from Home to access the upgrade checkout. See Proton’s payment-method guidance for details.
