Add and verify an eligible account from another bank in the UPI app you use. Once the replacement account is available, remove the Paytm Payments Bank account if it remains listed and the app allows its removal. The exact menu and removal rules depend on the app.
Why you may need to change the linked account
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed Paytm Payments Bank to stop providing banking services, including UPI, after March 15, 2024, subject to exceptions in its release. In its customer FAQ, the RBI advised users to change their linked account to another bank before that date to avoid disruption.
Changing a bank account linked in a UPI app is separate from moving money or closing an account. Paytm Payments Bank said existing balances could be withdrawn even though new deposits and credit transactions were restricted. The RBI separately addressed wallet closure and balance transfers in a specified full-KYC-wallet situation; changing a UPI setting does not perform either action.
Before you start
- Choose a UPI-eligible bank account. The bank must support UPI and the app must be able to find the account.
- Use the bank-registered mobile number. The phone number used by your UPI app must match the number registered with the bank. On a dual-SIM phone, select the SIM associated with the account. The NPCI BHIM guidance also tells users to choose the bank-registered SIM.
- Allow outgoing SMS. Account discovery and verification may require an SMS sent from the phone. Google Pay lists outgoing SMS and a UPI-compatible bank among its setup requirements.
- Have a supported verification method ready. The app and bank determine which methods are available. Google Pay documents debit-card verification and an Aadhaar-based option only where the bank supports it.
Add the replacement account in your UPI app
Look for a bank-account or payment-settings section in the app you actually use, then follow its verification flow. These examples are app-specific; menu labels should not be assumed to apply across UPI apps.

Google Pay
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Bank account, then Add bank account.
- Select your bank and the account to link, then complete the verification prompts. Google Pay’s instructions describe debit-card verification and an Aadhaar option where supported by the bank.

Paytm app
- Tap the profile icon.
- Open UPI and Payment Settings, then choose Add New Bank Account.
- Select your bank and complete the SMS verification prompts to link the account.
These steps apply to Paytm’s app, not every UPI app. Refer to Paytm’s help page for its current labels.

Check the new account, then remove the old one if appropriate
After verification, confirm that the replacement account appears in the app and can be selected for payments. If you keep multiple accounts linked, some apps let you switch between them; NPCI’s BHIM guidance describes switching among linked bank accounts.

Do not remove the old account until you have confirmed the replacement is available and considered any app-specific dependencies.

Google Pay removal example
- Open your profile picture and tap Bank account.
- Select the account you want to remove.
- Tap More, then Remove account.
Google Pay also says an account update requires removing the account and adding it again. Its account instructions cover the app-specific process. Other apps may use different menus or rules.
If account setup or removal fails
- The bank account is not found: Check that the bank supports UPI, that the app uses the mobile number registered with the bank, and that the correct SIM is selected.
- Verification does not complete: Confirm outgoing SMS works and use a verification option supported by both your bank and the app. Aadhaar-based onboarding is not available for every bank.
- The old account cannot be removed: Check the app for AutoPay mandates or UPI Lite associations linked to it, and follow that app’s instructions before retrying.
- The menu labels do not match: App screens and flows vary. Use the current help page for the app you use rather than applying another app’s steps.
What changing the linked account does not do
Updating the account in a UPI app changes which bank account the app can use for UPI payments. It does not transfer a Paytm Payments Bank balance, close the bank account, or complete a wallet closure. Handle any remaining balance or closure separately using the bank’s and RBI’s applicable guidance.
