Update each payer separately: changing your bank account does not automatically change the deposit details held by your employer, pension administrator, or benefits agency. Use each payer’s official portal, phone line, office, or form, then keep your old account open until the new one receives a payment.
The steps below include U.S. federal examples. If you live elsewhere, contact your employer, plan administrator, or benefit agency for the correct process in your jurisdiction.
How to prepare for a bank-account change
- List every recurring deposit and its payer. Include salary, each workplace or government pension, Social Security or other government benefits, and any other recurring payment. Treat each payer as a separate update unless it confirms that one process covers multiple payments.
- Open the new account and collect its details. You may need the account type, routing number, account number, and bank name. The information requested varies by payer. Enter it only through a verified payer or bank service.
- Check the payer’s route, cutoff, and effective date. Use the payer’s official website, phone number, office, or form. Ask when the change must be submitted to affect the next payment; there is no universal cutoff or effective date.
- Save proof of the update. Keep the confirmation and submission date, and check with the payer when the change takes effect.
- Keep the old account open until a deposit reaches the new one. The change may not take effect for the next scheduled payment.
How to update salary deposits
For a private-sector job, contact your employer’s payroll or HR team and follow its secure payroll process. There is no single national portal for private employers. If a government payroll office pays you, use that employer’s designated system or contact.

For example, U.S. federal civilian employees paid by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) can use myPay. DFAS directs employees who cannot access myPay to contact their customer service representative, payroll liaison, or HR office: DFAS civilian employee benefits.

How to update pension deposits
U.S. federal civilian annuity paid by OPM
Sign in to OPM Retirement Services Online, select Direct Deposit, choose Change, enter the new bank details, and save. OPM also describes phone and written routes, including Standard Form 1199A. See OPM’s account-management guidance for the available options. OPM advises keeping the old account open until the new account receives a payment.
U.S. military retired pay and applicable annuities
DFAS provides online changes through myPay and paper-form options. Its June 2025 newsletter says an update made through myPay takes three to seven business days to reach the pay system; this is a processing estimate for that method, not a guarantee about when a deposit will arrive: DFAS June 2025 Retiree Newsletter.

DFAS’s retired-military forms guidance gives a 45–60 day processing allowance for certain direct-deposit form requests. That estimate applies to the relevant form route, not to all pensions or benefits: DFAS retired military forms. Follow the instructions for your specific payment and keep the old account open while the change is processed.
How to update Social Security or SSI deposits
For U.S. Social Security benefits, sign in to your relevant my Social Security account and update direct deposit. Some benefit types may require you to call Social Security instead. A participating bank may also be able to submit updated details through Automated Enrollment, but not every bank offers that service. SSI recipients have distinct online options. If you cannot make the change online, call Social Security or contact a local office. Confirm that the route you choose supports your particular benefit before submitting details.

The available process depends on the benefit category. Some payments—including travel reimbursements, caregiver stipends, refunds, and life-insurance benefits—use separate systems or forms.

VA lists phone and in-person alternatives for certain changes, as well as Standard Form 1199a for people without internet or phone access. Check the instructions for your specific payment before choosing a route: VA guidance on changing direct deposit.

What to check after submitting a change
- Confirm the request was accepted and save its confirmation number or other proof.
- Ask the payer for the effective date and whether the next scheduled deposit will use the new account.
- Monitor both accounts around the payment date. Do not assume the change has taken effect until the deposit appears in the new account.
- Contact the payer promptly if a payment is missing or sent to the wrong account; use its official contact details.
