To update a power-related driver on Windows, let Windows Update check first, and use the computer or device maker’s support site only when Windows does not offer the package you need. Before you download anything, confirm which device you are updating, because “power driver” is not a single, fixed component name.
Identify the device before you update
“Power driver” can refer to a power-management driver, a chipset driver, or a driver for a battery or AC adapter. The title does not name a PC model, Windows edition, or chipset, so start by finding out exactly what your computer is.
- Press Win + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. On the System Summary page, note the System Model, the OS Name (the Windows edition), and the System Type (for example, x64-based PC).
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Expand the category that matches the device. Power-related entries often appear under Batteries (for example, Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and Microsoft AC Adapter) and under System devices, where chipset and power-management components are commonly listed.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab. Note the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
Start with Windows Update
Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred general route for driver updates, and it is the lowest-risk place to begin because Windows selects packages that apply to your device.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and wait for the scan to finish.
- Install any driver or quality updates listed, then restart when prompted.
The exact labels can differ by Windows version, so if the wording on your screen is slightly different, look for the same section under Windows Update.

Optional driver updates
Windows does not install every driver automatically. Optional driver updates appear under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, where you can select the ones you want and install them. Install an optional driver only when it matches the device you identified above and you have a reason to update it, such as a device that is missing, failing, or behaving incorrectly. Otherwise, leave it alone.
Install a driver manually from the manufacturer
If Windows Update does not offer the driver you need, download it from the official support page of the computer maker (or the device maker, if the device is a separate component). Microsoft directs users to the device manufacturer for manual driver downloads, and it advises against third-party driver download sites.

- On the manufacturer’s support site, search for your exact model from the System Model value you noted in msinfo32.
- Choose a driver package that matches your Windows version and system architecture (for example, 64-bit Windows 11). A driver built for a different Windows version or architecture should not be installed.
- Download the package. If it arrives as a compressed file, extract it to a folder you can find again.
- In Device Manager, right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, point Windows to the folder containing the downloaded files, and leave Include subfolders checked if the driver files sit in subfolders.
- Restart the PC, then reopen the device’s Properties and check the Driver tab to confirm the new Driver Version.
Choose the right source

Do not judge a driver by its date
The Driver Date shown in Properties is set by the driver’s provider. Microsoft notes that provider-selected dates can look old, and that Windows uses targeting information, rather than a simple date comparison, to decide which driver applies to a device. A newer date does not automatically mean a better or more correct driver, and an older date does not mean it is wrong. Compare the Driver Provider, the Windows version and architecture the package is built for, and the problem the update is meant to address, using the manufacturer’s notes where they are published.

Microsoft’s official driver guidance does not provide an attributable figure for how much a driver update improves speed, battery life, or stability, so this guide does not promise any of those gains. A driver update is most useful when a device is missing a driver, is malfunctioning, or is running a driver that is incompatible with your Windows version. If a PC feels slow, treat a driver update as one check among several rather than a guaranteed speed fix.

If something breaks after an update
Do not respond by installing another “latest” package at random. Identify which change preceded the problem, then use one of the steps below.
Roll back the driver
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for audio devices includes rolling back a driver when a problem began after an update. The same option is generally available for other devices: open Device Manager, right-click the device, choose Properties, and select Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab. The button is greyed out when Windows has no earlier driver stored for that device.

Reinstall the driver
If rolling back is not possible, right-click the device in Device Manager and choose Uninstall device. If the dialog offers Delete the driver software for this device, select it only when you plan to install a known-good package from the manufacturer afterward; otherwise Windows may reinstall the same driver. Restart the PC and let Windows detect the device, or install the manufacturer’s package manually as described above. Before uninstalling a device such as a keyboard, touchpad, or the only network adapter, make sure you have another way to reach your files and settings.
When neither step fixes it
Power-related devices vary by component and manufacturer, and without a model the exact recovery sequence cannot be pinned down. Contact the manufacturer’s support with your System Model, the Windows version and build, the Driver Version you have installed, and the date the problem started.

Windows 10 users
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, according to its lifecycle documentation. A driver being available for Windows 10 says nothing about whether the operating system still receives security updates, so check whether your PC can move to a currently supported version of Windows rather than relying on driver updates for protection.
