For a Hermes Agent installation managed from a source checkout, run hermes --version, optionally check with hermes update --check, and then run hermes update. The updater pulls the configured latest code, installs dependencies, runs post-install checks, and can prompt for new configuration. Finish with hermes config check and, when needed, hermes config migrate. Docker, Nix, Termux, Windows, and macOS installations use their own package or application update mechanisms instead of the in-place command.
Quick answer: the normal Hermes update command
Open the shell or terminal in the environment where Hermes Agent is installed and run:
hermes --version
hermes update --check
hermes update
hermes config check
hermes config migratehermes update --check is optional. It tells you whether the checkout is behind its configured update source before changing files. The actual update is hermes update. The Hermes documentation describes it this way: “Update to the latest version with a single command: hermes update.”
Do not run that command blindly in every installation type. Hermes-managed source checkouts can update in place; Docker images, Nix profiles, Termux packages, Windows packages, and the macOS app are owned by their respective packaging systems.

First identify how Hermes is installed
The correct update path depends on which system owns the Hermes files. Updating through the wrong owner can leave the running service unchanged, overwrite managed files, or fail with a read-only-filesystem error.

If you are unsure, run hermes --version first and look at how Hermes is launched. A shell command from a project checkout points toward a source installation; a container, Nix profile, mobile package, or desktop application requires its own update workflow.

Safe update procedure for a managed source installation
1. Record the current version
Run:
hermes --versionSave the output in your change notes or terminal history. It gives you a before-and-after comparison and identifies the version to return to if a rollback is necessary.
2. Check the configured update source
For a managed checkout, run:
hermes update --checkThe check evaluates the update source configured for that installation. “Latest” therefore means the newest code on that configured channel or release path, not necessarily an arbitrary branch you have not selected. If the check reports that the checkout is current, running the updater is normally unnecessary unless you need to repair dependencies or rerun installation hooks.
3. Keep the pre-update snapshot enabled
The updater normally creates a snapshot of runtime state before changing the installation. The documented snapshot can include pairing data, cron jobs, config.yaml, .env, and auth.json. These files can contain credentials or service identity, so treat the snapshot as sensitive and retain it only in a protected location.
The command-line interface exposes --backup and --no-backup controls. Keep the default backup unless you have a specific operational reason to disable it and have an equivalent recovery copy. Disabling the snapshot makes a failed update harder to recover from, especially when the failure involves configuration or authentication state.

Run:
hermes updateThe documented process pulls the new code, validates critical files, installs or refreshes dependencies, and reruns post-install hooks. Read the terminal output rather than interrupting it while dependencies are being installed. If the updater asks about configuration options introduced since your previous version, record the choices and complete the prompts before closing the terminal.
5. Check and migrate configuration
After the code update finishes, run:
hermes config checkThis check identifies invalid or missing settings against the new version. If new options are missing, add them interactively with:

hermes config migrateMigration is different from merely checking the file: the check reports problems, while migration adds newly required or available options through an interactive flow. Review generated values before accepting them, particularly when the setting controls an external account, a gateway, a schedule, or a security-sensitive credential.
6. Verify the running service
Confirm the resulting version:
hermes --versionThen test the gateway or other service that normally runs Hermes. Check that it starts, can read its configuration, and can reach the integrations you depend on. An update is not complete merely because the command returned successfully; the running process must also resume normally.

The documentation notes that using the messaging-platform /update command restarts running gateways. Expect a brief interruption if you use that route, and test again after the gateway comes back.
Updating a manually managed source checkout
A manual source installation is a checkout and virtual environment that you maintain yourself rather than one updated by Hermes’s built-in updater. Use the repository and environment you originally created:
- Change to the checkout directory:
cd /path/to/hermes-agent. - Activate the virtual environment used by Hermes.
- Pull the intended branch:
git pull origin main. - Reinstall the editable package and all optional components:
uv pip install -e ".[all]". - Run
hermes config check. - Run
hermes config migrateif the check or release changes require new settings. - Run
hermes --versionand restart the gateway or service managed by your process supervisor.
The pull command above follows the documented manual-install procedure. If you intentionally track a branch other than main, preserve that branch choice instead of switching channels accidentally. Also make sure the uv command runs inside the same environment that launches Hermes; reinstalling into a different interpreter will not update the executable your service uses.
Updating Hermes in Docker
Do not run hermes update inside a Docker container. Image-managed filesystems refuse the in-place updater, and Hermes reports the image-pull command to use instead.

The safe container workflow is:
- Identify the image tag or release channel your deployment is supposed to follow.
- Pull that selected image using your normal container tooling and the command shown by the Hermes documentation or by the updater’s error output.
- Stop and recreate the container from the new image.
- Reuse the same persistent data mount, environment variables, network settings, and exposed ports.
- Start the replacement container and inspect its logs.
- Run the version command inside the new container and exercise the gateway or integration.
The important distinction is between the disposable container filesystem and the persistent data mount. Recreating a container is expected; recreating it without the original data mount can make Hermes appear to have lost pairing information, schedules, configuration, or authentication. Back up the mounted data before replacing the container, and verify that the new image uses the same mount path.
If the new image starts with configuration warnings, run hermes config check in the replacement container and complete hermes config migrate where supported. Do not copy package files from the old container into the new image to force an in-place update; that defeats the image’s reproducible runtime.

Updating a Nix installation
Nix owns the Hermes runtime when Hermes was installed through a flake or Nix profile. Update the flake input or profile that defines Hermes, then rebuild or switch to the new generation using your normal Nix workflow. The exact command depends on whether your configuration is a flake, a profile, Home Manager, or a system declaration.
Do not mix a Nix-managed runtime with hermes update. The built-in updater cannot own files that Nix expects to remain immutable, and a later Nix rebuild can replace any manual changes. After switching generations, run hermes --version, hermes config check, and a gateway test. Nix’s generation history provides the appropriate rollback mechanism for the package itself; configuration still needs checking after a rollback.

Termux uses its package manager for this installation. Refresh package metadata first, then upgrade the Hermes package:
pkg update
pkg upgrade hermes-agentAfter the package manager completes, run:
hermes --version
hermes config checkIf the new package introduces settings that are absent from your configuration, use hermes config migrate. Keep the Termux session or service environment consistent with the one that previously launched Hermes, because updating a package in one Termux installation does not update a separate container, virtual environment, or desktop copy.
Windows and macOS packaged installations
Windows
Use the same distribution channel that installed Hermes. For a Windows App Installer package, apply updates through Windows App Installer. For a Microsoft Store installation, open the Store’s library or update area and apply the Hermes update there. Do not use source-checkout commands against a packaged application unless you deliberately installed a separate source copy.
After Windows finishes, open the installed application or its provided terminal entry, verify the displayed version, and check that any gateway or background component starts. If you have both a Store copy and a source checkout, verify which executable your shortcut or service actually launches before judging whether the update worked.
macOS
For the bundled macOS application, use the application’s Update control. That route invokes the app updater and replaces the bundled runtime as a unit. Once it restarts, verify the version and test the gateway or integrations. A separate command-line checkout, if you maintain one, is independent and must be updated through its own source workflow.
What “latest” means for Hermes
Hermes can follow a configured stable or release channel, so the newest version available to your installation is determined by that channel and its update source. A production machine may intentionally remain on a stable release while a development checkout follows a different branch or channel. Before changing channels, record the current version, configuration, and service state; changing the source is a deployment decision, not just a routine patch.

When comparing update methods, evaluate four things:
- Ownership: Is Hermes managed by its own checkout, Docker, Nix, a package manager, or a desktop updater?
- Channel: Which stable release, branch, image tag, flake input, or package repository does the installation follow?
- Replacement model: Can files be updated in place, or must an image, package, or app bundle be replaced?
- Operational impact: Will configuration migration or a gateway restart interrupt service?
How to verify an update completely
Use this verification sequence after any update method:
- Run
hermes --versionfrom the same shell, container, package entry point, or app environment that runs your service. - Run
hermes config checkand resolve every reported issue. - Run
hermes config migratewhen new options are missing and review the values it proposes. - Start or restart the gateway using your normal service mechanism.
- Confirm that pairing data, scheduled jobs, configuration, environment variables, and authentication still load.
- Send a harmless test message or perform a low-risk integration check.
- Watch logs through one complete startup cycle for dependency, authentication, or migration errors.
If the version changed but the service did not, you probably updated a different environment from the one your process uses. Check the executable path, active virtual environment, container name and image, Nix generation, or Windows/macOS application copy before repeating the update.
Rollback after a failed update
When a managed or manual source update introduces a failure, first preserve the error output and the pre-update snapshot. Avoid repeatedly running the updater while the cause is unknown.
- Inspect recent source history:
git log --oneline -10. - Choose a known-good commit or release tag.
- Check out that commit or tag.
- Reinstall dependencies for the selected revision using the same environment and installation method.
- Run
hermes config check. - Restart the gateway with
hermes gateway restart. - Verify the version and perform an integration test.
A rollback can expose configuration incompatibilities in the opposite direction. A newer release may have added options that an older revision does not recognize. If the rolled-back version reports unrecognized settings, remove those options or restore the compatible configuration, then run hermes config check again. Do not delete authentication or pairing files unless the error specifically identifies them and you have a protected copy.
For Docker, roll back by recreating the container from the previous known-good image tag while retaining the same data mount. For Nix, switch to the previous package generation through your normal Nix rollback workflow. For Termux, Windows, or macOS, use the package or application channel’s available previous-version mechanism; do not mix those with source-checkout rollback commands.

“The command is not found”
You are likely outside the virtual environment, using a different user account, or invoking a packaged installation through another entry point. Activate the environment that originally launched Hermes, open the correct container, or use the installed app/package command. Then run hermes --version to confirm the executable being used.
The updater says the filesystem is read-only
This is expected for image-managed Docker filesystems and can also occur with immutable package systems. Pull or install the new image/package and recreate or rebuild it through its owner. Do not force-write into the container or Nix store.

The update finishes but configuration check fails
Run hermes config check again to capture the exact missing or invalid option, then use hermes config migrate for newly introduced settings. Review syntax, environment-variable names, and file permissions before restarting the gateway.
The gateway does not return after updating
Check the startup logs, confirm dependencies were installed into the active environment, and verify that the configuration and authentication files are present. Restart with hermes gateway restart where that command applies. If the failure began with the new revision and cannot be corrected, follow the rollback procedure rather than deleting the installation.

Verify that you updated the same checkout, image, Nix generation, package installation, or app bundle that the service uses. Multiple Hermes copies can coexist. Compare the executable or container path used by the service with the one in your interactive terminal.
