Google TV has two separate update systems: the TV’s own system software and the apps installed on it. Check system software in the Google TV settings; update apps through the Google Play Store. Keeping those paths separate prevents you from looking for an app update in the system menu or a TV firmware update in the Play Store.
This guide gives the exact Google TV procedures, explains manual and automatic app updates, and shows what to do when menus differ, the interface becomes slow, or an app still crashes after updating.
Google TV system updates and app updates are different
A system update changes software that runs the Google TV device itself. It can include platform changes, device fixes, or manufacturer-provided improvements. An app update changes one or more applications installed on the device. Google exposes these controls in different places.

Google notes that labels and steps can vary by device. A television with a manufacturer-customized interface may place the same controls under slightly different names. If the paths in this guide do not appear on your model, use the manufacturer’s support instructions rather than assuming the device is broken.

Before you start
- Connect the device to the internet. Google’s setup guidance supports either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Without a connection, Google TV cannot check online update information or download app packages. See Google’s Google TV setup guidance.
- Use the TV’s remote or Google TV controls. You need to navigate the on-screen Settings and Play Store menus.
- Allow time for downloads and installation. App updates can temporarily consume system resources. Google warns that “Your TV might be slower while app updates are in progress.”
- Know which result you need. If the problem is the TV interface or device software, check a system update. If one streaming app is outdated, use the Play Store update list.
How to check for a Google TV system update
The system-update control is in Google TV’s About section, not in the Play Store.
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open About.
- Select System update.
- If Google TV offers an update, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
The exact wording or location can differ on a manufacturer’s device. If you cannot find System update, look for an equivalent system or software-update entry in the device maker’s support documentation. Google directs users to the manufacturer for device-specific help; its guidance is not a guarantee that every model uses identical menus.
What to expect from the system-update check
The check tells you whether the device has an available system package. If no update is offered, there is no Google TV system package being presented through that control at that moment. Do not treat the absence of an offer as proof that every installed app is current; app versions are managed separately in Google Play Store.

How to update every installed app at once
Use the Play Store when you want to update applications such as streaming, media, or utility apps. The Play Store can present several pending updates together.
- From Google TV, search for and open Google Play Store.
- Select your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Manage apps & games.
- Open Updates.
- Select Update all to install all updates currently listed.
To update only one application, open the update list and choose that app’s individual update option instead of Update all. This is useful when you want to limit downloads or test whether a particular app update addresses a problem.
Google’s TV help uses the labels above, but a device maker can alter the interface. If your Play Store shows a different account or library layout, look for the profile menu and an installed-app updates list before contacting support.

How to turn on automatic app updates
Automatic updates remove the need to visit the pending-updates list every time an app publisher releases a new version.

- Open Google Play Store on the TV.
- Select the profile picture or initial.
- Open Settings.
- Select Auto-update apps.
- Choose the automatic-update option presented by your device and confirm if prompted.
Keep the device connected to the internet if you expect automatic downloads to occur. Google’s TV-specific instructions use the Play Store route above; phone and tablet help pages may show different menu labels, so do not transplant those paths onto a television.

Checking both areas can be appropriate when the entire interface is sluggish and one or more apps are also outdated. It is still two separate operations: a system update does not substitute for app updates, and updating apps does not update the TV platform.

The update menu is missing or has different labels
Google TV menus are not identical across manufacturers and models. First confirm that you are looking in the correct area: system software belongs under the device’s system and About settings, while installed apps belong in Google Play Store. If the controls remain unavailable or the labels differ substantially, consult the TV or streaming-device manufacturer. Temporary sluggishness during app installation is expected enough that Google calls it out in its troubleshooting guidance: “Your TV might be slower while app updates are in progress.” Let the update activity finish before judging whether the device’s normal responsiveness has changed. Google recommends checking both app and system updates when troubleshooting a slow or laggy device. That recommendation does not promise that an update will cure every performance problem. If the device remains slow after the update work is complete, continue with the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting rather than repeatedly starting the same update.
The device is unresponsive while you are trying to update
If the remote or interface does not respond, use Google’s unresponsive Google TV troubleshooting guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. General Google TV steps cannot guarantee identical recovery behavior on every television or streaming device. Avoid assuming that a missing response means the update failed; first follow the device-specific recovery process.
An app still crashes after it is updated
An update may not resolve every app fault. Google’s separate guidance says to close the crashing app and, if the problem continues, contact the app developer. Follow the troubleshooting steps in Google TV Help’s app-crash article. This is an app-level problem, so repeating the TV system-update check is not a substitute for the app’s own support route.
The update does not appear
Confirm the device is connected through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then reopen the relevant update screen. A system update appears only when Google TV presents one for that device; an app appears in the Play Store list only when the store has an available version for the installed app. If the connection is working but a device-specific update issue persists, contact the manufacturer as Google recommends.
How to keep updates from disrupting viewing
- Run a manual Update all when you are not in the middle of watching something important, because app updates can temporarily slow the interface.
- For a single problematic app, update that app rather than every listed app so you can isolate the change.
- Use automatic app updates if you prefer less maintenance, but still know where the manual update list is when troubleshooting.
- Check system software separately when the entire Google TV interface is affected.
- Record the exact model and manufacturer before asking for support; menu differences are often device-specific.
When to contact the manufacturer
Contact the TV or streaming-device maker when the documented Google TV paths are absent, the model repeatedly fails to install a system update, or the device remains unresponsive after following its model-specific instructions. Google explicitly directs users to the manufacturer for device-specific help. Include the model number, the menu path you attempted, whether the device was connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and any on-screen error text so support can distinguish a platform issue from an app issue.
